The rubber pinch roller tire will deteriorate on its own over time regardless of whether iso alcohol is applied to it or not. Just like the belt and other rubber bits inside the machine.

Great vid to look through as I'm about to try to get my 34B working after sitting for almost 20 yrs in a wardrobe. The belt and pinch roller are both almost dissolved so I've ordered new ones from Ebay. However, eager to estimate the state of the machine I tried your trick to see if the capstan motor works. Unfortunately it does not seem to do so. I just read through the comment below where @VinnyDistefano had the same problem. I'll try the same trick, disconnect the motor and apply voltage to it. Also, that white string by the left tape tension arm is broken on my machine just like on yours. Very curios on what way you took to fix it, I don't really know how to tackle it.

Great instrional video. I'm restoring a 34B right now, Replacing the tension arm strings. I freed up the hubs that the sring went around. I noticed on your machine there's a small metal arm that the rod goes through and the string attaches to the top of the rod. Does the arm sit on top of the lip of the bracket or does it hang down and move up and down as the rod moves? Thanks
@TheTapeFarm5 жыл бұрын
It only moves when the arm reaches the top of its range.It acts more or less as a brake for the tension arms.

Hello Goodnight. I have a Tascam 34b and I don't know how to remove the front cover. I already removed all the screws and removable parts. I still can't get it out. seems stuck. What could I still need to take out?
@TheTapeFarm2 жыл бұрын
There is an odd nut that goes around the pitch control. It has two slots on either side that you need to remove using a pair of needle nose pliers. Home that makes sense. It took me a while to figure it out. You can see me putting it back on at about 15:30 in the video.

What size hex wrench do you need to remove a tascam 34 pitch control knob?
@siondudley4 жыл бұрын
Tascam 38 needs a 1.5 mm hex wrench. I’d imagine it’s the same. And then you need a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the nut at the base of the pitch control shaft

Great video. I’ve just bought a 34b and the right tension arm doesn’t drop back down, so when I rewind the tape The deck just continues rewinding until I move the arm back down. Any info would be appreciated thanks

Sorry for the late reply. This got lost in the mix for some reason. Hopefully the issue is resolved by now, but if not… does the arm move freely? Or is does it feel stuck?

My Tascam 34 capstan stopped rotating. I have the service manual with the schematics, but can't find the transistors in that circuit. Would you know where I can find a layout of the pcB 137? I've been all over the Internet and zero. Thanx.
@TheTapeFarm2 жыл бұрын
Have you checked the belt? That is the most common reason the capstan would stop.
@VinnyDistefano2 жыл бұрын
@@TheTapeFarm I already replaced the belt. When I lift the tension arm so the photosensor is in play, the correct voltages are present on the IC circuit chip U519, but I cant find the transistors to get to the next step without completely removing the control board to locate them which "m trying to avoid or jump ahead to locate the capstan motor assembly board which I'm sure is buried in there.
@TheTapeFarm2 жыл бұрын
@@VinnyDistefano gotcha. So the capstan motor is not spinning up. Have you tested the motor? Applied voltage to see if the motor spins up? The only reason I’m asking is because it’s pretty rare for the components on the board to fail. I mean it happens for sure, but when I hear the beating of hooves I think horses, not zebras. So I would check all moving parts first before digging into the electronics.

@@TheTapeFarm Thanx. That means dismantle the side to get to the capstan motor connections, right?

@@VinnyDistefano Or if you can find the relay that feeds the capstan motor. You can check for voltage there and manually engage the relay and see if the motor spins.

Alcohol does not desolve rubber. The fault is in the rubber process. Belts that goo up have never felt alcohol.
@ramrodou8123 жыл бұрын
interesting. i always thought that the reason the roller had a crown on it was so it was self centering.
@TheTapeFarm3 жыл бұрын
Yes but also to roll off if the belt gets too loose. Otherwise there would be fluctuations in the tape speed as the belt loosened up over time. This way, it just slides off when it needs to be replaced.
