I have the very same machine here, it's my go-to DAT for transfers (though I have a fleet of different models). The only thing to note is that the very longest DAT tapes are spat out by Tascam machines, they have to be run on a Sony.

It's a nice machine, and I like the way it looks too. I discovered the tape length limitation when I tried to use a 90m DDS data cassette. The machine rejects it with "Error 03". Apparently you can circumvent this by covering the sensing holes on the cassette, but that didn't seem to work for me. Maybe I covered too many holes.

Very nice Tim. Clear, logical and interesting (as usual). As a suggestion why don't you invest in a headband LED torch with a swivelling beam. This would give you both hands free to tinker in the circuits!

I would have cleaned and replaced the Thermal Compound to minimise possibility of reoccurrence of the failure .Oh well lol

Yes, I should have done that really, but there was still some of the old paste left. The component I fitted has internal over-temperature protection, so in theory it should just shut down if it overheats. If that happens I can try refreshing the heatsink compound.
