Good job--I've been looking for the right digital recorder for about a year now, and the DP 008 looks the best to me. Great job with the comparison and use of 10 minute limit!

I had that same 4 track tascam back in 1989, and just recently purchased the DP-008 porta studio- on sale now for around $100! =) Awesome trip down memory lane! God Bless!

DavesTrumpet Thanks for the quick reply! I know this video is almost 4 years old... I got my kids into guitars after purchasing a game called BandFuse, where they plug an actual guitar into the Xbox, and now they are learning Way Faster than I ever did! I busted out my old CD demo from the early nineties and blew them away! Great to see them getting into music. Can't wait to get into this new porta studio and start them recording. Your video was very inspirational! (Tascam has a great $50 rebate on it now, I bought mine for $149 at Guitar Center, and with the rebate... $99! I suggest any starting/starving musician to invest in one)

Hi Dave, lovely video. I have a project Porta One model. All I have to do is replace the belts and vu meters. Great little machine. But my main recorder is he Tascam 488mk1 8 track cassette recorder. It's s beauty. Kind regards. Paul.

Thanks for the video. Like you I had the gp as a kid back in the day. The new one is on the way and I can't wait. It's all of what I need to be with or WITHOUT my mac or pc when on the go. And I could also bout this up real quick instead of the MBP to catch ideas before I forget em.

Great video man, looking back at the old cassette tape units of the past. I've got the DP-008 and it's awesome.

I bet you never thought your video was going to get such a response. Just shows the power of music and how many people want to be a part of it. Which is all the more reason why you should do a video on recording with the porta one four track. It would be the only video of it on KZbin. One I would personally want to see!

Thanks for the video. Even though it wasn't a product review, it's better than 90% of the videos out there that tried to review it. @meanderer I still have my MK III as well, and I love it. I just bought the DP-008ex, but will still use the MKIII for mic'ing percussion and when I need more than two inputs.

@Diontay20 It's just a multi track recorder. You put it into it, it records it! There is some onboard reverb, but no effects. You'd have to mix that later or while you're actually recording. Thanks for your comment! I'm actually surprised my little video has received this many views and comments! ;-)

Awesome video. I used the PortaOne's "son" as it were, the Tascam 424 four track for years and upgraded to the Tascam 488mkII eight track. I though 8 tracks on a cassette was insane, and that machine can still crank out great recordings when used with care. The DP-008 is tempting me, just to have as a quick 'songwriting' demo machine You only made me want one more Dave...

I'm pretty much "old-school", in that I still love recording onto magnetic tape. I've done some digital recordings, which is much easier...but with recording on tape, you need to figure out what sounds you want BEFORE you hit the 'record' button. Thankfully, I still have a Tascam 424 MKIII - and I'm seriously thinking about firing that baby up.

Good video! I've been looking at this at GC due to the problems I'm having learning Cubase! I know it's a good program but I need something a bit more user friendly until I can spend more time learning how to use the program. Thanks for posting this, very helpful in making my decision.

Thanks for this video. I own a PortaTwo Highspeed and used it years ago to record multitracked music. It's getting a bit worn out, so I've been thinking about buying the DP-800, and it seems, from this video, and what I could find on the Net, that I should seriously consider the DP-800. Only downside: Your video made me feel a bit old ;-) .

Hey! Awesome video. Totally cool to see the changes in technology. Hope you haven't gotten rid of the older portastudio, theres just something about those vu meters :) Take care and thanks for the video!

@blranch8 Hi. It probably would't work as a mixer for too many applications since there are only TWO inputs to work with on the DP-008. In a live band situation, the Tascam would be better to capture mixed sound (L/R) off of the mixer board. The only Tascam Portastudio I know of with more than 2 inputs is the 2488neo. It has EIGHT.

@DavesTrumpet thanks for this review. I have two inquires...I'd like to know which SD card shall I buy with more capacity as I found that there are SD/SDHC cards class 2,4,6,10? I was thinking in buying one 8gb but there are different class ones...is it the same to get class 2, or 4 or 6 etc?? Another inquire....is it possible to connect electronic drums via line in and get it recorded in one of the channels? I asume that if it's connected to an amplifier like a guitar, then it should be posible

For recording vocals on the DP-008, is it possible to send the live input back to the headphones for monitering with reverb, without actually recording the reverb onto the track so I can take it home and mix a nice dry track properly in Pro Tools or Logic? Also, is it possible to record dry electric guitar to send back into amplitube or similar for re-amping? Thanks for your info and help!

I have come to realize that I am way out of date.....I can reel to reel all day long. But the small solo systems hae got me freeking out on the vine. I usually hear modern players demonstrate how easy it is to use these systems and find myself hating my efforts. But, I am going to get thier hands on the newer systems that make it easy to manup the track and play and record for detail. thanks for not attacking the man and for letting the explanation of the system sound rather easy and simplified. I ll keep at it or Ill go back to reel to reel again.

@SeymourSnide I've got the DP 004, and I've never had a problem exporting more than one track at a time. I hope it's not something that is a common issue with the DP 008, because I'm considering upgrading, especially since the price has dropped significantly... The only thing I wish it had was an effect send/return...

And speaking of pullin out my hair. I'm enjoying the DP-008 but I get a Disk full message and I erased a couple of tunes but that doesn't seem to be doing the job. How do I clear stuff of the card so I can continue to use the machine. Also I need to get a 32 SD any suggestions on a compatble manufacturer?
@DavesTrumpet13 жыл бұрын
@lpswinden Hi. Is the demo which you're trying to load to the Tascam an MP3? If so, convert it to .WAV and then drop it into the WAVE folder of the Tascam's SD card. From there, you can import it once the card has been replaced back into the Tascam. I think that will work, unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do.

What do you think. Do I need the original Tascam power supply for the 008 or can I buy a conventional 5V power supply? 30€ is way to much for the Tascam in my opinion.

@miradassimplesrock + I use a different sdcard and the DP-008 gave ne the option of formatting the disk to work with the Tascam...so far so good...would stick with San Didk...PS if you can wait I order my SDisks fro Hong kOng, they take 12-14 days but for an GB disk for 10.US including shipping it is well worth it...I still haven't figure out how to properly partition the disk so that I can save to my PC and reuse the crad.

Anyone know of a newer inexpensive multi track recorders that have outputs for each channel like the old one in this video? I need a recorder I can have everything running through, preferably still live when the recorder is off(for when not recording.) Something with RCA inputs and outputs for each channel and maybe a (1/4 inch stereo input? [patch cord thingy]) if it doesn't have one of these tell me about it still as long as it has multi outputs. Thanks!

@bergweg It records to SD card. But once you put the card in and never remove it, it kind of feels like internal memory! LOL! Best Buy has been having great deals on 4GB SD cards lately.
