You approach recording music the way I do. Almost exactly, except I use an electronic drum kit so I'm not having to Mic drums. I still use a 24-year-old BOSS BR-8 recorder and dump my tracks onto Audacity after. I like the Boss Br-8 because it has onboard guitar, Bass, and vocal effects. To me, it's easier than trying to figure it out on the DAW. Anyways, thanks for taking the time in making this video. Great to see someone likes using old technology and adapting it to the new like myself.

I had a BR-8 for a while, I loved that machine too! ZIP discs! Those things are super cool. I think some of the weird forgotten digital multitrack recorders are pretty sweet. I have a Zoom PS-04 That I use a lot too. I made a video or two about it in the past, probably make another one soon!

This sounds like a 90s instrumental written in 2023 and recorded in 1985. In other words .... I really like it. Also anyone who can play fretless bass deserves a shout out just for that.

I recently had a tascam 688 midi studio that I had to purchase to get a whole bunch of cassette Masters from college back in the '90s onto my hard drive. I really wish I had hung on to it a little bit longer after the project was done to record with it. It's incredible how every one of those tracks from 30 years ago had almost no tape hiss because the Dolby NR was just so incredible. And when you think about how absolutely minuscule the single track space is on a cassette tape when you're using an 8 track... Tascam really new what they were doing with that medium for sure.

I bought the same model in I think ‘89. I had to replace some capacitors, but still does well. I even dug out some Chr-bias tapes from storage

Great tunes, man. And I’ve watched your original video numerous times since you first posted it eons ago on the Porta 02’. I think you should treat yourself to another of the fancier models again and do a video on that, your tunes/playing warrant that (maybe the 246 or 464 🤷‍♂️). Also, that popping is likely from a bad psu that someone used at some point. There are four capacitors in there that are really sensitive to power issues and will add noises like that if the unit got something like the wrong voltage or inverted polarity (center positive instead of the required center negative). There’s a video here on YT of a guy called 3rd Island who demonstrates the repair if you’re handy with a soldering iron. Cheers!

I fixed the popping. It was the capstan just needed cleaning

I replaced capacitors in mine. The original were 10v electrolitics, but the power supply is 12v…. I put in 24v

Firstly this sounds amazing! Secondly... I presume you could record each instrument from the Porta individually (using volume to solo?) into your DAW? and then mix the track to then master?

Yeah you could. Though you might run into some synchronization issues since analog isn’t always consistent. You could surely doctor them up to align though.

When you purchased it new of course it did. On the used market obviously it'll be hit or miss. It's a fairly easy replacement though if it doesn't But make sure you plug the correct one in there or you'll fry it.
