If you need to be able to work with both a stand-alone digital multi-track recorder and a DAW, then the MODEL series is a great option. If you know the features you need upfront, selecting the right unit in this line is a no brainer. I wanted to share this information with anyone who is interested in the differences between the TASCAM MODEL series products. I had often wondered exactly what they were. I keep looking at reviews of the 12, 14 and 16 but I find out that the 12 I got about 2 years ago was the perfect one for me. I also use Alesis powered monitors. I use a tube headphone amp thru the sub because I didn't like the way this handled the phones and felt it was too quiet also. Great informative video !
@stevencirile Жыл бұрын
Here is another good setup scenario- if you have some outboard gear- in my case I do- hardware reverbs and other processing. Use fx out-Jack -mono send-disable internal effects- fx out Jack goes to your headphones distribution amp- I use a beringhear-and use a hardware reverb for it for talent-then I use Mon-1 and 2- sends to feed a stereo hardware effect chain in my case I run in series to a compressor-a saturation and widening unit and then into an aphex model 204-and return the stereo feed to channel 19/20-set to live input for a parallel type mix. For my hardware reverb send I use the ‘sub-out’ on a per channel need-engage it on any track you want hardware reverb-it sends to the stereo sub out fader and jacks-I use the Bluetooth channel as the reverb return. Any Mix of verb to dry can be done on the reverb unit itself. In my case I have 3 hardware reverbs- I run the stereo out to (2) passive splitters 2 in 4 out by galaxy audio-39 bucks each-then feed each hardware reverbs inputs separately-at the split- the re combine them to stereo for the return to Tascam using a Radial KeyLargo keyboard mixer-this way you have control of each reverbs volume- to create a dense exciting multiple reverb stereo return or turn any of them out of the mix. To taste, It only eats up 2 stereo returns leaving 18 open tracks 12 mono-3 stereo-which in a traditional situation w/ perhaps some ‘bouncing of tracks’ should be plenty. Hell most hit records pre 1980 were 16 to 24 tracks period-and 8 track in the early 70’s and backwards. Any outboard gear can be used-it’s the -routing- I have that makes the Tascam Model 24 in my case very usable and flexible as a standalone mix-record setup- In my case I have an RME BabyFace Pro FS-interface and an iPad Pro-I run my Mains Outs to the BabyFace as my two track master mix recorder so I do all final mastering inside an pad daw-I use Auria Pro with some plugins for sweetening as needed-if needed-and then export via audio share app to Postive Grids Final Touch App. Then save that mix in my desired format via that app.

thank you for clearly breaking down the actual differences... I'm actually quite baffled as to why Tascam chose to include/exclude the features that are particular to each model such as MIDI. I would have thought it would be quite important for syncing if designing a multitracking device that can sum & track audio from different instruments. I've been wondering how one would overdub, say drum machine parts in the model 16 or 24's multitrack if there's no midi. I suppose there's click and smpte like the old days haha
@pedrobossio5440 Жыл бұрын
I hear you, don't know why TASCAM left MIDI out of the 16 and 24, would have been perfect. For me to use a 24 I'd have to use my other interface and pre-record the MIDI tracks, render to audio before switching to the 24 Interface for recording Audio. Not going to happen.
@aiaccident8 ай бұрын
Im looking primarily at the midi functionality as I want to play live audio out minimum 6 tracks for live gigs while syncing to relatively advanced dmx light show controlled by ableton live. Taking audio from non PC source like the tascam instead of the ableton live should mean lower risk. Recently, I had to cancel a gig when pops was randomly occuring from pc windows. This solution could be primary or backup. Best, an old-school electronic waw file music producer (plus pad, guitar, base, hardware synth). My question is if the smarter choice is to go with standard midi in out (model 12) or with usb midi (model 16 or 24). Need more channels than 6/10/12 if possible.

Do all 3 model series have SD card recording capabilities. I have the Tascam 24D Portastudio and am pleased with it, though I don’t see anyway it has 24 tracks. The so-called stereo tracks are not really stereo as I know it. As far as I can tell you can’t record 2 separate tracks on them and you can’t pan the tracks separately. If I am wrong I’d be grateful if you would tell me how to do these things. I know that I can record a pre existing stereo recording from the computer onto the Tascam “stereo” tracks and can export two tracks from the “stereo” tracks.

The major difference is that the Model12 is a DAW controller whereas the 16 & 24 are not. This is significant ommission by Tascam considering the Model 24 is supposed to be the flagship model. I presume the onboard recording would record post fader, but would like to confirm also. Thank you!
@PowercoatMusic3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. From my understanding this would need to be pre-fader from the MODEL 12 because the DAW software must first be configured to work with the unit. No Model 12 Compressor, EQ and mixing functions are all in the digital realm. It is a digital mixer. Model 16 and 24 are 100% analog, except the multitrack recorder.

@@jeffreyschmoyer4851 Actually that is not correct. The effects are digital but the preamp INS and OUTS are ANALOG on the MODEL 12. That makes it an analog mixer with digital effects. There’s a big difference there. This fact is documented in TASCAM Technical specifications for the MODEL 12.

@Jeffrey Schmoyer One more thing to add. The MODEL 12 uses the same INPUT and OUTPUT preamp HDDA hardware as the MODEL 16 and the MODEL 24, which is ANALOG. Again, this is as per TASCAM’s own Technical Specifications for each unit in the MODEL series. Effects are digital, mixer is analog. Thanks for watching.

I currently own both Model 16 and Model 12. The block diagrams in the manuals show very clearly the difference: the Model 12 is a digital mixer because the ADC precedes the compressors and EQ for all the channel strips. So the actual sound mixing is mixing digital summing . In the Model 16 and 24 those same circuits are all analog and the mixing is happening by summing analog voltage signals. Yes, pre amps are the same (and analog) in all 3, that’s true. But the Model 12 has very very different guys than the other 2 - and that digital difference cascades to a bunch of other very nice things in terms of features: - switchable feed of the Multitrack pre or post compressor - switchable solo modes pre or post fader And other good stuff. But at the expense of a small difference in mixed sound quality. Both are warm sounding, but the Model 16 is a tad warmer to my ears. And I do mean a tad. By the way, Love your videos. Keep ‘em coming .. and would be worth it to edit this to include some of these differences.

If Model 16 had MIDI, I'd buy two of them RIGHT NOW. I've HAVE to have MIDI interfacing. Sad that Tascam doesn't offer this.
@Blizzard2393 Жыл бұрын
The model 12, 16, 24 all send midi time code via USB. The model 12 also sends midi clock/spp along with midi time code via 5 pin midi and USB. A work around (if you only have 5 pin midi) would be to lay a sync track with a korg volca fm 2 or any sonicware gear (for example liven xfm) oh and the novation circuits (not the circuit tracks or circuit rhythm). Just like laying smpte on a tape track. The main thing is none of the tascam model series sync to anything, everything has to sync to them. Hope this helped.

Why you need a midi in 16? 16 means you need it for group of instruments and with midi in that scenario is a bad idea.

Features-wise these fall short of being a truly professional solution: Lack of channel inserts, lack of aux returns, no MIDI or DAW controller compatibility on the 16/24 (why?!), only global phantom power, etc. Unless you really need to record to an SD card, you’re better off getting a regular old analog mixer and a separate audio interface, imo. Of course it depends on what you need to accomplish in the studio.

Why....cost. If ypu want more feature get a 5000 one... At this price range nothing offer more. I have the 24 and im very happy. I have a 1 mototised fader for logic that i use in conjonction with this. There is nothing in that price range that come close.

The sd card is perfect a 32 gig cost 14$ My computer blew...i had all my client raw track on a sd card...i have one for each client. I use the daw to process track... Use the board for hands on mix... Best of both words. And i always have back up.

You know this makes me rethink the model 16 and 24 even if they irritate me for lack of certain features that I don’t mind paying for however they do seem a fair use bang for the buck at their points. The 12 is not big enough and I want top inserts, maybe a single or two faders for the DAW will work because I only fool one at a time anyhow. Good point thx

none of these new tascams have a bounce tool like the 32 track portastudios form tascam you 'can' bounce tracks but you have to manually patch up such a task.. it's a workaround and show that it's not really much like the postastudios from the 244 in the 80's onward in this regard. they are cool but they are clunky in some aspects.

I quite like routing with patch cables to bounce.

11:15 you need to let your dog out, lol
@PowercoatMusic3 жыл бұрын
It's the neighbor's dog. My dog's gone but she used to be really quiet (Alaskan Malamute). Yeah, I have to be very careful of when I record videos because sometimes you'll hear their dogs barking. You do what you can but it can be a real pain. 😒 Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

I found the model 12 sounds better for drums than the 24 did. Anyone else experience this?
@toddsmeester64143 жыл бұрын
Complete noob question here. When connecting guitar, can you run your amp directly into anyone of the units using the cable you would otherwise plug into your cabinet? If not, what do you have to do?
@Javierbecerraplaza3 жыл бұрын
Even if the output from the amp doesn’t break the input, it’s only gonna sound like a speakerless amp. Better to put a microphone in front of the speaker for recording. For silent recording, you need an interface or a speaker simulator system.

I had one for a couple of days and noticed one fatal flaw. You can’t listen to the headphones unless the main faders are up.

Omg- that’s like really fatal

Hey chip I looked this up. I think you need to play with the PFL and AFL buttons along with PFL/AFL knob. Please report back.
You say "they combine the warmth of analog with a digital workflow." This makes no sense because all the audio processing is done in between the converters. They provide tangible knobs and faders. Nice, yes, but nothing to do with "warmth."
