Just picked one up yesterday. We tested it through a Mac via Logic and were very happy to see how easy it was to connect and play with zero driver installation or anything like that. Today I’m going to test it with some 512GB SD cards I bought. Hopefully, the bigger cards won’t give me too much grief firmware-wise, and the formatting isn’t too complicated. There are so many implications for its use for my band and others’. I’m planning on recording rehearsals and practicing at home with those tracks, recording us live and maybe using the basic tracks for a studio release, recording other bands live on our bill so they can do the same... the list is endless! I’ve been searching for a digital multitrack hardware unit with at least 16 balanced XLR inputs and dedicated mixing sections per channel - at a decent price! - for a couple of decades, so this has thrilled me. The fact that the compression/EQ section is analogue makes me happy as it’s a bonus.

So do you multi-track record into Logic with the Model 24 or just one stereo track? Also, how much mixing needs to happen in Logic after tracking for your band's needs? I'm trying to do multi-tracking for a big drumset, but I'm so torn between all the mixers out there today.

I purchased one before they were available. I'm very happy with it. I wanted something to do quick recording without getting bogged down with a DAW, computer and programs. Young guys and gals that are into DAWs and/or MPC-styles, ways of making music will have a hard time with this and want more features that this wasn't designed for. All the additional wants would drive the cost up and make it a different product than it's intent. Guys/gals coming from the "old school" days of tape and analog recording mixers will get it, although it doesn't have the routing capabilities without going to a DAW. I don't mind plugging and unplugging say a keyboard to get to a different channel to record a different track. The only minus's I have are small and that's TASCAM needs to review the manual to fix some errors or some confusion that may be due to being written outside the U.S. and not translating to clear, understandable English. My one wish is a VGA input just so there's a bigger screen to see what's going on versus the small, onboard screen. Well, worth the money. Wish it was possible to buy a second one and link them to expand it. I hope Boynton does another or more videos on this board that shows the recording and live use process.

I downloaded the Model 24 "user manual" (which is very sketchy and lacking) and got very confused about the actual capabilities. I get that this is a nice Mixer for live recording. But it is not clear to me what the range of Mulittrack/Playback/Record capabilities are. For example: does this unit (Model 24) alone by itself -- with no other computer or DAW or other audio equipment being ever involved --- allow a home musician to: 1) record an instrument on one track, 2) then play that track back unaffected while recording a second instrument onto a second track, 3) then play back the two tracks together at the same time while recording a third instrument on a third track, 4) then play back the three tracks together at the same time while recording a (microphone) singing performance on a fourth track, 5) .... etc...etc.. and so on and so on ... until a single person can build up 20 tracks of music content by himself that will form one single complete song (by themselves) -? And then can they playback the completed 20-track song (created track-by-track at time by one person) and do a Master Mixdown --- and send out the Master Left/Right signal as a normal stereo *.wav audio file -- through the USB connection on to a USB stick? My old Tascam 424 cassette documentation had good examples and illustrations that walked you through the recording & playback scenarios, routing the tracks, bouncing tracks, doing the final mixdown, etc. so someone like me could follow it. This Model 24 documentation does not do any of that (just a dry description) .. so you have to just know what the workflow is ... and from what I've read I'm unsure whether this does the "do it all yourself" home musician stuff that I described --- without that workflow being dependent on DAWs, Computers, other equipment, etc. Can someone please clarify this? Thanks!!
@BoyntonProAudio5 жыл бұрын
FreeSociety1 It’ll do everything that you’re looking for. The only thing we’re not sure about is if you can export the mixdown from the SD card to a USB stick right from the model 24, but you can save the file on the SD card, pop the SD card into your computer and then just drag the file over to the USB stick.

Thanks for the confirmation and feedback so far (I was confused by the user manual sketchiness). So let me refocus my questions here then just on the Final MASTER/MIXDOWN task (without having a separate Computer, MIDI or special interfaces, and Pro-Tools/ DAW stuff -- that I have never liked or used). Let's say we have some 18-track tune created on the unit. Now......I want to play the song back and do a final Master or MIXdown (with final volume, EQ, panning and effects adjustments made) into a normal stereo 2-TRACK Format as a Waveform file (the master) .... and have that master audio file preserved on my USB stick. How do I do this? (not clear from the documentation I read) A) What does the units own USB interface provide here to help me? B) How do I reduce the multiple-Tracks that I created down into a Mastered stereo 2-Track standard audio file format? C) How do I then get this 2-Track mastered audio file (standard format) into my own favorite storage media (USB)? Thanks again for your help. I'm just not a DAW or high tech guy ... I'm coming from the old days where everything was tape-into-tape.

So far I love the Model 24 as an easy to use LIVE mixer. Easy to use! My “issue” is that there is much todo about its multi-track recording/mix down CAPABILITIES but very little in the way of HOW-TO setup the Model 24/PC/DAW/Card and the process to do this? Given that X32 DAW interface and routing How-Tos are endless ...Is the Model 24 too new for these? An instruction manual/KZbin how-to videos would be greatly appreciated .
@Pharesm5 жыл бұрын
There is no "card" needed. Just connect a USB cable to mixer and PC/Laptop and - possibly - download and install a driver on your computer. Dead simple, no manual needed until you try to optimize latency. But that's a fairly basic process as well, I'm sure Tascam has instructions - otherwise, there's plenty of generic instructions on the web. A problem to worry about would more likely be the fact, that phantom power on/off is a global affair! So you can only turn on phantom power for all inputs at once.. That seems idiotic to me and sorta ruins my plan to buy one.

The major thing I'm confused about is using this for analog mixdown. What I really want is to record my tracks one by one through my focusrite 2i4 into my DAW, but use the Tascam 24 to control the levels and panning for each of these tracks separately. So, basically use my DAW as a playback engine, whereby each track in the DAW is played back in it's respective track on the Tascam. What I'm confused by here is, how do you get the tracks in the DAW to correspond to a respective track in the Tascam? Is this accomplished all via USB? Or do I also need to upgrade to an interface with say 24 inputs and outputs to do this? When I saw the Sweetwater demo of this feature, I did not see a bunch of cables going to in from, rather it appeared he simply had cables hooked up to the monitors in his studio and the Tascam linked to his DAW via usb, but all of the tracks in the DAW corresponded to each respective track on his Tascam.
@Amicitafortior4 жыл бұрын
It is not a control surface, and that's could be confusing I guess. It is like those mackies that had usb feature, it is a usb out, you can get your channels as "In's" on your DAW and then press record to get those record onto your daw. But it doesn't say much about latency and I doubt you could, per say, do some direct monitoring of a software effect... I doubt it will control your daw anyway

Only the master stereo recording captures the EQ and effects. All the other 22 tracks are post-preamp and post-comp. However, there's a trick to bounce an EQ'd track to another. Yes they can. Standalone your record for one through once one at once and you go back and redo one while listening to the other ones just like in a real studio amazing yes I know computers are all the rage but I love the songs not this one but things like them

Hi, I just have a question. I am already using an analog Tascam mixer, the M312B as a preamp, and connect it to a focusrite 2i2 and sometimes to a tascam 1800 interface. My question is, will this console give me a better sounding recording than all the gear I am already using?, I am aiming for a better analog sound by the way.
@BoyntonProAudio6 жыл бұрын
Hi Erick! So here's where it always gets tricky. We've been in business for over 65 years, carry a lot of brands of gear and sell interfaces from $99 right on up through huge, pro-level consoles. Anytime you do any readying online, you're bound to see people who argue that $100 guitars are just as good as $2,000 guitars, that the material that a drum is made out of doesn't matter and that preamps and converters don't make a difference. Those people are of course in the minority and most wouldn't agree with them, but that's just how their ears hear things. In our opinion, something like the Model 24 would definitely streamline your workflow and yes, give be an overall upgrade. Things like the quality of microphones and mic positioning are going to make a giant impact as well, but if you know what you're doing as far as setting up the gear and engineering your tracks, we'd be really surprised if you weren't satisfied with your upgrade to the Model 24. The mic pre's, converters and effects sound fantastic, and it'll do wonders for your overall workflow. Feel free to give us a call toll-free Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm EST at 1-877-SOUND-01 and we'd be happy to chat with you about your needs, your existing gear and help in any way that we can. We're all giant gear nerds here and love chatting about toys. Thanks! -Juan

@@BoyntonProAudio I appreciate your reply. I have one more question: does the tascam 24 give you a warm analog rounded sounding when it comes for recording?
@BoyntonProAudio6 жыл бұрын
@@ErickRodriguez-oo6wb It's definitely on the warm side. Whether into a DAW or the internal SD card it's still going to be a digital recording and thus won't sound like recording to tape, but it's still worlds better than a lot of similar products on the market.

@@BoyntonProAudio I am aware it won't sound exactly like on tape. But does its sound pushes toward digital or analog?

Insert plugs are both sends and returns in one plug housing, i think the tip is the send and the ring is the return, the shaft is earth, it looks like a stereo type plug but wired differently so it is both out and in, I think that's why they call it an insert as its been inserted into the circuit in one hit!

Great Mixer without a doubt ...But what bothers me a lot and prevents me from making a purchase is that the inputs are not on the back side of the mixer. It looks terrible when you use it as a studio mixer.

I have some very bad news about this Mixing board. I bought it, but there is a Big BUT about it. I need some help alright? I'm not able to get a true accurate mix while using the headphones. The sends on each track does not work with the head phones. The music and vocals fly all over each other with the headphones on, and the individual sends per recorded track do not work while you have the headphones on. They work without them only, but it's not fair that I can't give a true accurate mixdown while I have the headphones on.

I dont understand how this is a 24 track when there is only 22 tracks , and to me it seems like even then its not really a 22 track either its more like a 17 track because whatever you plug into just the mono 13/14 it just records on both tracks , so mono 13 records on 13 and 14 at the same time, there seems to be no way to choose just one track , but if you plug into just the the R 14 it will record only on the 14 track but only the right side and its the same through to 19/20 and even the RCA 21/22,,,very confusing and illogical it seems

doesn't have tools to bounce tracks down.. say tracks 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 to track 9 and 10 ...you have to go out via cables and in again to mix anything..clumsy... my tascam 244 cassette recorder could bounce track down in 1983... 2019 on a model 24...not so easy i'd mix down by moving the project stems to a DAW.

The announcer in this video is full of plosives. No pop-filter? The background music is completely and totally unnecessary, and competes with the plosive announcer.

Hi. I already purchased this machine. Why doesn't Tascam care about the Portuguese language? Why don't the manuals come in Portuguese too? Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. The music market is huge in this language. With all due respect, I ask you: Are those responsible for promoting the Tascam brand sleeping? Or are you convinced that everyone has to know English? Did it cost a lot to have this video translated? It would be useful for many thousands of people. Brazil alone has almost 210 million people. Greetings.
