@@3rdisland477 that would be amazing. Since making my comment, I’ve at least learned my AC adapter had the wrong polarity. Ordered a correct one. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to power up. I found the porta 05 HS at a thrift store this morning.

Bought one off ebay to start messing about with. The head sticks forward and i have to disassemble the machine and manually rotate a flywheel to get play function to work and heads to retract. Then when i press stop the heads stick forward and i have to jam a plastic pick between the head to pull it back down again.

Thanks, this is a simple issue, you have a bad belt, just replace it and you will be done

Perfect help! Thank you so much. I did it like shown. Glued the plate, respaced the spring and put the arm to move again. FF and Rewind are working again. Big problem: After pressing play the spinning wheel does not rotate, the driver wheel looks o.k. Feels like a unknown invisible little brake. I can rotate the wheel by hand in play mode in both directions, then the autostop is overriden. But the right wheel does not turn in playing mode. Any advice? Greetings from Germany. Thanks!

Hello, what is the purpose of the plate you remove at 2:38? and how is it called? mine is broken and makes a high pitch sound. Whenever I touch the plate the high pitch stops, is there anyway to get a replacement for that plate? any guidance would help a lot! thank you.

hello, this is the head sync, to eliminate the noise from electromagnetic waves of radio frequencies and transmission stations you can use any aluminum sheet to cover the head and ground it to the chassis , good luck

@3rdIsland477 i cant find the idler seems like stuck ff/rew gear with dry grease cleaned them like you said. But cant find the idler which is like a one inch rubber band not a rubber wheel right? But waiting on belts from canada and idler belt. Hope you reply with a paragraph. Seems like you dont get back to the second comments made a lot of answers we need.

Could anyone give me some info on what would cause a capstan and capstan motor to run constantly? I know this is standard on some machines but is not the case on my Porta 05. I've checked all the leaf switches and none of them are stuck on

@@Luxoflux- this model adapts runing motor, you can add amicro switch oncthe right of the cassette housing parallel to the record switch to stop the motor when no cassette inserted, will make a video for this issue, thanks

This is great thanks I’m glad I found your videos. I have similar problems to some others here with my porta 05 I got second hand. It’s strange, when I press Play, it works for a second, the heads move into place, but then it begins pulling the tape out of my tape, stops itself and resets. It does this when there’s no tape in as well FF and Rewind work fine I’m gonna try and open it up to take a look myself but I’m really inexperienced with tape machines. Any advice or thoughts would be a super big help!

Thanks, the take up reel does not spin when the play button pressed so it stops as a safty feature, you will find a small rubber idler beside the take up reel, clean this idler with sand paper and you be done, good luck

@@3rdisland477 great! I’m working on it, but I have another question. I cleaned the idler wheel, but I noticed it’s not even making contact with the take-up reel. Should these two be in contact? Is the tire that degraded (there is a 2-3 mm gap between them)? Or, how does the idler wheel spin the take-up reel? Thanks again!!

@3rdisland477 Are you available for repair still? My husband has one of the Porta05 in pristine condition, original box etc but there is a tape stuck and he believes the play button was stuck in the engaged position. I don’t want to risk damaging it further by trying to fix it. Thank you!!

I wonder what the pressure of the pinch against the capstan ends up being with this approach to the cracked head base repair? I wonder how well your heads are aligned when you put the head base back in. Did you manage to find a calibration tape somehow? I guess it isn't too critical, but if the erase and rec are out of alignment your won't be able to wipe previously recorded audio and you can have bleed between channels if you try the tape on another deck. I don't think these should not be resold and potential buyers should be careful. A good fix for your own machine though! Nice move with uncoiling the spring to tuck it into the channel.

The head base is too soft compairing to the spring pressure

@@3rdisland477 Yes, that is why the head base cracks on these and similar Portas. What a flaw! Limited to this product line thankfully. Other older and new Portastudios have different headbases. Yours a good fix that doesn't just glue the cracked part (which won't hold in my experience). I wondered if your repaired version has increased the pressure between the pinch and capstan (the spring pushes the pinch onto the capstan to feed the tape), but it probably doesn't matter!

I was wondering I don't have any defects in either of the Tascam Port 05 videos my rewind works. My Play and Fast forward do not. I have looked greased some of the plastic gears I have been able to manually start the tape by pushing on small plastic peg by the play head and then it moves it toward the tape. But it does not seem to be able to transport by its self.

@@3rdisland477 Yes when I hit play the heads do not move. Then the small rubber pads lift from both of the reels. Then the play button after a few second the machine will click and it will return to the up position. The fast forward gear will move when the button is pressed but sounds like it gets stuck's and after a few seconds it will also click and return to the up position.

Thanks for the videos, i recently got my Tascam working but now when I record on it sound is bleeding from track 3 to track 4 , I’m guessing that the heads need alignment, is there a easy fix for that? Thanks

Hi, thanks for your comment, check the head screws if it is still with sealing glue, other wise the pinch roller may needs to replace

Great videos! I did the repair of the little plastic piece with the spring. Went well, but still having issues with the play head sliding up and engaging (FF and RW seem to work fine). Any thoughts? Does that sound like a belt issue? Also, I see you do repairs for $50. Very interested, how do I go about that?

PLEASE HELP!!! i have the same tascam and it will not play, although it does fast forward and rewind the tape. i watched another video of yours and saw that the plastic piece under the play and erase head was broken, so i glued it back together and reassembled it. still has the same problem. i record all my music to this and i don’t have the funds currently to replace it, can you help me?
