I've come back to this song after not thinking about it for a long while, noticed a lot of people wondering about the video so I'm gonna throw my interpretation out there: I'm convinced the young girl in the video is supposed to be her younger self hence she sees her in a mirror and I think a lot falls into place if we make that assumption. We open with her using 2 house plants to hide a cactus, bringing to mind Freud's concept of the Id, Ego and Superego. The cactus/id represents that which is most fundamental about us and the yearning for immediate joy. By covering it with the two more attractive plants she indicates how this more dangerous side of us is pushed back so that we can appear pretty on the surface and function in our society. The TV is a distraction from our true identity and unhappiness at having to control ourselves to fit society's mould. It's also a core influence on how we act as an adult in society. Beyond the obvious association with nuts and going nuts like she does in the video, I think cracking these nuts represents her cracking open her outer shell - the mask that she puts on to appear normal to others. We see the character turn away the mirror afraid to see herself as she clutches at the TV which brings her the safety that she's grown to rely on. But it seems as the character cracks open more and more nuts she forced to confront her true self, something that's been buried since she was an innocent child maybe due to trauma. I'm not entierly clear on this, but I think she puts the nuts in the frying pan to try and burn them, maybe it's representing her hating herself and wanting to destroy herself, or at least the side she had repressed. As anyone who knows psychology would expect, it's unsuccessful, as shown by the mirror constantly showing her reflection despite her trying to turn it away. She clings to everything she can but eventually seems unable to stay away from the mirror. It's only when she sees and accepts the person she has become that the madness starts to subside and there are moments of peace. It's through this introspection that she sets free her younger self. She sees herself through the eyes of a child, the dance shows her eyes becoming truly open, seeing the toxic world she's created for herself. The candles represent life span, different sizes as they have different amount of years left to live. She realises with so little time left, she can't spend the remainder of her days doing as she had before, that she must find again the joy and excitement that children see in life. As they play, smile and laugh, the house which is portrayed almost like a small prison burns away. The plants die, and she crawls out. She's bruised and torn apart, but now has freedom and infinite possibility represented by the neverending white all around her at the end. This song teaches us that as we grow up we actually lose our minds, driven crazy by the ticking clock of death and bending to fit in to society. We forget that 'life is a masterpiece' and we forget how to have true fun and joy. Let yourself out of your cage, take off the mask you put on to impress others, even if that means everything you've built burns down around you. It's never too late to give yourself the freedom of a blank slate.
