I would have just had the crew setup some hidden cameras or something then taken everybody out to lunch. Alex would've been surprised to find that no surprise was waiting for him and everybody had left.

I had a similar approach of an anti-surprise. He'd be expecting a surprise so I'd just be standing there waiting for him with literally nothing. No surprise is a surprise when you're expecting a surprise.

Series 3 was special to me because it felt like the stereotypical characters from a school class was competing. We had the goofy fraternal twins, the weird quiet kid and the troublemaking rich kid and his yes-man lackey. With ex-teacher Greg it made it even more magical.

This would’ve been a great idea for an individual task if they changed it so whoever got it wouldn’t know when Alex was going to come out of the shed, but in reality Alex was never in the shed so they just sit there ready to surprise him for ages just waiting.

A surprise is when something unexpected happens. Alex was expecting something that would be surprising to happen when he exited the shed, so the most surprising thing they could've done is doing absolutely nothing. Surprised nobody ended up doing that. Maybe it sounds like it could be bad television, but I think Alex coming out of a shed after waiting an hour, and looking around puzzled as absolutely nothing happens would be pretty funny especially if it beat everyone else who actually put effort in.
