For the people arguing that melting a hole in the tube would be moving it. I don’t agree. The instructions says that “the pipe most not be moved”, not “the pipe can’t move”. The pipe melting would if you would call that may type of moving, be the pipe moving, not that it has be moved by someone else. And also in Danish I think it would be even more obvious it would be allowed. I haven’t seen the episode and I speak Swedish, but I’m guessing the probably used the Danish version of “flytta”. Atleast in Swedish them not being allowed to flytta the pipe, would mean they don’t get to move it somewhere else. It has to stay in place. While we use another word for just generally describing motion. You wouldn’t say that part of the melted pipe “flyttade”. That sentence wouldn’t make any sense. Because that is not how you use that word. Even a partly melted pipe, if it remains at the same place on the tray on the table, haven’t in any way “flyttat”.

I still think Aisling was right, because no frame of reference was provided. If it was relative to the tray, the she did not move the pipe. But if its relative to the ground, then she did move it. So without specifying, there is no correct answer.

@callmeandoru2627 2 жыл бұрын
There's a saying that you need two engineers to change a light bulb. One person holds the light bulb itself, the other person rotates the entire universe around it. Basically since movement are relative, I can just rotate the tube 180 degrees and argue that I'm technically not moving the tube, I'm just moving everything else around it. I can even prove my point by taping my phone to the tray so that it's camera points toward tube, hit the recording button, and use the footage to prove that from that point of view, the tube doesn't move at all.

I would have just taken the water, filled up to the first hole, put an umbrella stick in to keep the ball from falling down, plug the end with those (grapes?), then repeated the process until the ball has risen to the top, where I will have effortlessly dropped it back down to the bottom, therefor fucking up my entire plan.

due to relativity, one could argue that the pipe never moved...

This brings back memories of when a toothbrush fell down my kitchen drain. Vacuum was also the solution then.

Movement is relative. We're all moving in relation to the Sun, so it's going to move in reference to something. We must choose a frame of reference, and she chose well. Flipping the try upside down works if you judge movement in terms of the tray.

My first thought was kinda similar. Ok, keep the pipe stationary, kick the table out from under, then remove the tray, and let the ball fall out of the bottom. Wouldn't have been nearly as funny though...

How far do you go though? Can you screw the tray to the table and move the table? What if you collapse the foundation of the house thus moving it? The house is sitting on Earth that is in perpetual motion, so technically the pipe is already moving. Honestly, the task should have been worded better!

in defence of Aisling, all movement is relative. We are hurtling through space on this big rock, so everything on the planet is moving all the time, and the task description wasn't specific enough. Relative to tray, the tube didn't move - success!

Who are these people? What’s most amazing is how they were able to find so many incapable people and have them all be in one place.

Ashley got robbed. The tube only moved from the perspective of an external reference frame. Change the reference frame and the tube did not move relative to the tray.

"not enough liquid" no thats true though I did a Geocache recently where i had to firstly figure out where the cache was, and it said i needed 600mL of water. I took a litre with me. There was a pipe attached to a fence post with holes at the bottom and a pill bottle in it with the log you need to sign. I quickly poured the whole litre in, and the bottle popped up and i got it. Didnt need to plug the holes, just needed more water than told.

i guess it depends on your frame of reference to decide if the pipe is moving. if your frame of reference is the center of the milky way, then the pipe moved an extraordinary far distance. if your frame of reference is the tray, it didn't move at all.

Going by the rules and looking at the set up, my first solution would have been a fishing attempt.

"Your game plan was to overflow the holes?!"... Surely that *would* be the best way? If you add more water than is going in then the water level will rise. Not daft at all.

That was actually my first thought with this task as well but I don’t think it’s the smartest solution considering you’ll probably be flooding the whole room.
