This video is my most favourite of all time the 830 class and the emu bay hydraulic locos are my many favourites

The two are indeed a great combo, and then throw in the little gutsy old X class! It all makes today look so damned boring.

That white hopper car on the rear of the 830s train was that a superphosphate or ballast?

Some history and nostalgia, thanks for posting. I like the sound and music too.

Appreciate the comments Zane. I do like to break things up with a bit of music along the way. I really like what can be done with different music against various types of footage. Some pure rail enthusiast are a bit precious tho, it seems, but in my world there's more to life than just trains and their 'sync sound'

Incredible stuff Ted, and once again the music choice is absolutely spot on. Must've been an amazing view of the EBR from those XV guards vans, but the slack action would've been a killer on those big trains!

The EBR train with 9 locos and 46 or so wagons coming in at around 3000t was an impressive train for Rosebery to Burnie in Tas. Makes today's look a bit dinky! I reckon it could get a tad rough in that van at times for sure

Where were the shots taken on the North East? Climbing out of Herrick? Beside the Tasman Highway between Tonganah and Scottsdale? I managed to salvage the horns and head light mounts off a few Alco at Sims Metal Bell Bay (locos auctioned off between $2000 to $15000), two saved others scrapped in 1988. Saved a few buiders plates, they had one in the cab and one either side of the cab. Waste of locomotives. Magnificent bogie axle load sharing suspension ideal for rough North East track ('the goat track as crew called it)

The north east coverage starts at Tonganah (initial shot climbing out of Tonganah itself) and goes through to Blumont I think the siding was called. At the time they were loading pine logs there. Agree entirely re the scrapping of the 830's. It was criminal. Most were still very healthy and functioning locos. And yes, the bogie design on those beasts was spot on. They rode really well, held their feet well right down to very low speeds and were very 'kind' to the track. The same cant be said about the very tragic alleged TR locomotives. They hardly qualify as a locomotive.They are a pile of garbage in so many ways and chopping out the rail on tight curves like theres no tomorrow. So much rail has had to be replaced after just 7 or 8 years!

Terrific to see some home grown FE class wagons, (purpose built in the workshops at Invermay). I understand they’ve been converted for container freight now.
@tedbear4243 Жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne. Many of the locally built FE wagons were indeed converted to move containers by Pacific National, tho they had weight restrictions on them. After many years and many kilometers, most of them were scrapped sometime ago. PN tried to scrap the whole lot toward the end of their tenure but some actions by a couple of employees going public with what they were upto saw many saved and again used in the initial years of logs returning to rail in Tasmania. I believe there might even be a few still in storage at Longreach.

The symphony of Alco & EE sounds in this video is amazing. Thank you!

Thx James, much appreciated. The parents thought I was crazy out and about at sometimes crazy hours getting this stuff, but I'm so pleased I did it now. Unlike the Betacam SP tapes I used later on when I got to use professional gear, VHS tapes have actually held up pretty well, especially the audio.

Interesting to see one of the 830 (859) class still in the "mustard pot" livery and not the green and gold AN. Carboot "discount" between mates out of the Holden at 5.56? Some great aspects of filming during the "X" class scenes, great imagination to experiment with a great result. Stationmaster at Ulverstone, blast from the past, collar & tie and short back and sides with parted hair drenched in Californian Poppy or Brylcream...Walker diesel hydraulics a cousin of the NSW 73 class, were they Caterpillar too? Cracking video, loved it!

Hi Dave. You've certainly got an eye for detail - I concur with you re the sus activity @ 5.56. It was Scottsdale after all! And yes, the SM at Ulvie - classic stuff. Those days are ancient history of course, but seem like it was only a few years ago to me! Yep, those 10 and 11 class ex EBR were caterpillar engines. And I'm sure those that designed and built them would never have imagined so many of them in multi. They worked like that for a while too. Again, thx for the observations and comments :-)

Hi there. I'm not quite sure what you mean by re-posting. You should be able to scrape the video off of KZbin as is.

Hey Ted.. get yourself a copy of topaz ai video enchance and put your videos thru it before upload to youtube.. it will make these videos look like they have come off bluray.. (needs fast video card)
@tedbear4243 Жыл бұрын
Thx Lefty, i will look into it, but I tried a number of different and costly things, including a Black Magic card but they were all a frustrating waste of time, money and effort. In the end I've captured the old VHS tapes thru an old Canopus piece of kit which gave me the opportunity to improve some aspects of the material. But very open to ideas and suggestions.
