Is this how you would set the engine before removing adjuster/tensioner? Should it be at 40 degree after TDC when removing tensioner and so?

Hello Tasos, is it possible to the left intake cam adjuster without removing the valve cover? I have the timing tool set to lock the cams into place but isn't that to prevent them from unseating during the adjuster removal? Your content is awesome, I am currently working towards changing the left intake adjuster, it is skipping and I am surprised Mercedes hasn't extended warranties on this because it seems fairly common across the Mbenz forums. Thank you in advance!

Yes it is possible, but it is easy to loose time that way also

if this chain on the driver is off timing what's the best way to turn the chain into the correct position or I have to remove it the have the marks line up

I think they show both ways because when the cam cover (valve cover rocker cover whatever) is on it is really difficult to see that top view so you have to 180 the cam (360 the crank) so you can check timing based off the bolts in the tensioner. But if assembling the engine and installing heads it seems it would be easier to time from the marks on top? Is that correct Tasos? I am used to BMWs you are the Mercedes master and I need to time this M278 and really don't want to screw up😜 the honing plates are being made now.

Tasos you are a rock star! Thank you for making so many excellent videos on the M278, they have been immensely helpful to me! I do have one question. How can I change the right-side metal tensioning rail without removing the head? I can't pull the engine to remove the head in my home shop and I can't seem to remove the rail with the head on because of the tight clearance of the rail within the head.

Yes you can change the timing chain and guides without removing the cylinder head, it takes almost 3 days, one day you will spend removing the sealant/cleaning the parts like oil pan, timing cover, head covers, hpfp housing, vacuum pump, oil filter housing don't forget you need new water pump gasket, timing cover coolant fitting, oil thermostat cap, engine oil, oil filter, lots of seals and black colour sealant (I'm using always toyota sealant). Before you start clean the engine bay and the bonnet/hood so when you open the covers to don't fall any dust in the engine. Be careful how you will hold the engine because to remove the oil pan you need to remove the crossmember first and after removing the oil pan you have to install again the crossmember. When you will torque the cam adjusters bolts and the damper pulley the engine needs to be steady and properly bolted on the engine mounts and crossmember. First you remove the oil pan then put back the crossmember, secure the engine, put someone to hold for you the flex plate and then loose the damper pulley bolt. You are lucky because it's Sunday and right now I'm not doing anything otherwise I'll forget to answer. I hope I cover you.

so then is then is difference that with the timing marks on the chain and pulley your at 40 °after tdc at the power stroke, versus using the bolts your at 40° past the exhaust stroke?
