This doesn't look like the trees are destroyed but what do I know. Never been to Thailand.

No the tree isn't destroyed. The "sap" would have made coconuts. Instead they harvest the sap and don't let the coconuts grow. Once they decide to no longer harvest the sap. the new flowers will result in coconuts.

The Palm tree is to the people of Thailand what the Bison was to Native Americans. Imagine having an invader come to your lands and destroy nearly all of your trees how that would devastate your world.
