Yup, they look like chicago hardy. Very few figs are grafted... they are mostly grown from single rooted cuttings or tissue cultures, so it is the same variety. They darken up as they ripen ( one fig was about 3 or 4 days ahead of the other). Typically, if there is any white sap when you pick it, it is not fully ripe. They taste good at many stages of ripeness, but better with a higher sugar content when they are fully ripe like the dark one.

Hi Lisa, I totally share your excitement over getting the first figs from our trees! They do sweeten and change colour as they ripen. I look for the neck stems to be bent quite downward before I pick them. Maybe somebody here has more experience and can let you know why they could be different. ~ Sandra

I usually wait to the stems to be downward too, but with my blue jay visitors I didn't want to take any chances this time!

I think there's one called a breeba crop, as ones on first year stems, or not. I don't know which one is which.

My understanding is breba is the first crop in the spring. The little figlets (the very tiny ones) on the tree in the fall will enlarge in the spring and ripen. The main crop is the one that ripens in August. Here on Vancouver island, we don't reliably get a breba crop. ~ Sandra

I'm in zone 6b and my neighbor's tree died. I put in a Chicago Hardy from Lowes. It came back this yera, the first, but had no figs. :l@@NanasWorms

Figs are so easy to propagate! I would recommend pruning of a bunch of branches off the Chicago Hardy, stick them in water until they root and then get them planted and start growing a bunch more.

Just root them in potting soil. It will be much less likely to have root damage later.

@@andthoseotherguys I prefer to root mine in water until I see white root ends barely appearing and then put it in the soil. The ones I've done this way take off with crazy growth and no root issue.

Fig branches can mutate and create a new variety. The fignomenal was a mutation of the Chicago Hardy.

Same figs, The green ones, while soft and starting to ripen, they aren't fully ripe. Chicago Hardy turns purple and shrivels when fully ripe and maximum flavor. The longer you leave it and the more it shrivels and the darker it gets, the more concentrated and complex the flavor will be. To a point and then it will just start to dry up and fall off.

Hi Lisa just a thought...i go to the farms a lot and seems to me they might be at different maturity level I buy frim this older chap in saanich and he has only the 1 variety, the last time, he said they may raise your blood sugar just a bit, cause they are more ripe, than last time we were there, totally edible Idk but wondering are you going to preserve some for winter? If so, what method?
@GrowingonVancouverIsland
@GrowingonVancouverIsland 10 ай бұрын
They are different levels of maturity for sure. Not sure if they are the same variety or not. The wine colored one is definitely sweeter then the other one. I don't have enough figs to preserve them! Not yet
