Very nice elevator modernization, and this is what I think they should have gone with for the Driscoll Hotel in Austin, or even keep the original, even more beautiful cabs just like when I filmed one of them back in 2009.

I just left the Galvez. They moved the desk area to completely block the view of those beautiful elevators. The doors have full length black stencils of '20s flapper figure silhouettes and the deco molding replaced with plain. The wonderful light fixtures have been replaced with overdone chandeliers. The warm lobby furniture, gone. The grandfather clock, gone. The marble staircase, carpeted. There is a noisy bar to the left of the entrance with huge red chandeliers and a neon cowboy. I don't know WHAT the new owners were thinking! It's heartbreaking what they've done to the Queen of the Gulf. The whole place has gone from tasteful to tacky.
