Make sure the bearing caps are in the order that they were when you took it apart. They should be machined in place and are left/right specific.

You are doing a great job. There will always be things that have trouble going back together on a project like this. Disregard the negative comments left by others. The two suggestions I have for the stuck differential are 1.) Make sure you have the bearings caps in the correct orientation and on the correct sides. 2.) You may need to adjust the bearing side shims. When you change the side shims you are affecting the gear backlash. When you adjust the shims behind the pinion gear head, you are affecting the pinion depth. Good luck! You will get it figured out. I look forward to the next video.

i'm surprised you did not pack the bearings? Mark everything and take pictures before you take things apart might have helped.

The reason for the stuck differential is the tapered bearings on for the diff carrier. When compressed they slide apart, making the bearing slightly wider

Hi guys, great work. We can't all be an expert in areas of the job. But you guys seem to be doing a very neat job, can't wait to see the whole build come together..... Have you used plastigauge on the bearings to work out your clearences? It's a very good way of checking clearances on bearing caps I can't quite see your set up properly and do not know if it will work, but it's my go to for checking wear/clearence on any engine bearing shells.

Install the 2 bearing carriers and measure the ID. Then measure the OB of your 2 bearing races and see what your dimensions are. I think the outer bearing race is too big and your causing a crush situation which puts a clamping force on your rolling elements for the bearings. good luck Sven

These are auxiliary fuel tanks that sit in the rear wheel wells. Pretty curious setup they came up with there. Not exactly sure why they made them round like this since they have to fit into a pretty square space.
@eyeswideopen7450

@@jonasfreitag similiar tanks are pretty widespread with Defenders. I think they made them round so you can produce them from two pices of bulged out steel instead of multiple flat surfaces...

Your TC is VG080, not 150 which is w463 TC😐
@77uhlen

you seem pretty clueless - read the workshop first, when installing new side bearings (you will need new shims to get the correct preload) - for that procedure a diff spreader is needed. Hammering the new bearings together with the old spacers in is brutal and wrong. The Verteilergetriebe on the 460 is a VG080 - not a 150 (that is used on the 463. A painful video!

As said above, the bearings needs to be shimmed. If you have access to equipment you can stack the bearings and diff carrier and measure the width and compare to the diff housing bearing seats. After that you need to check the contact pattern between the pinion and ring gear. After that you should check the pinion lash and have that to the correct spec. This process could mean re-shimming both pinion and ring gear. Once that is done you need to check the contact pattern between pinion and ring gear again. If needed, you may have to reshim to get the correct pattern.

@@jonasfreitag Some engineers blue helps with checking gear contacts, but as Mathias said, get the bearings shimmed correctly first. It's reasonably easy if you have the correct measuring equipment, but if not, start off loose and shim to the right tolerance. It will then be in and out a few times till you get the pinion gear shimmed correctly. Once you get it done, you won't forget how. Good luck.
