It’s no secret that McDonald’s food is unhealthy and the company is prone to scandals. But it might surprise you just how unhealthy it really is and how many scandals there truly are. The company-the single largest restaurant corporation in the world, and one of the largest in general-has a long history of mistreating its managers, employees, customers, and even the food itself. As a result, they’ve stacked up a lot of skeletons in their many closets around the globe.

When I was a McManager, we broke down and cleaned the ice cream and shake machines every night. Shake one night, ice cream the next, and so on alternating. We cleaned the pump tubes that sent the mix to the machines, the blades that mixed, and all the intricate parts and O rings of the dispensing mechanism. The machines had special washing AND SANITIZING instructions. When I was supervising the closings, I always double checked that the parts were clean. There were many a night when I told the employees to clean it again properly.

The complaint by vegetarians and Hindi about the fries being cooked in beef fat resulted in the rest of us ended up with a less tasty product. Once again, a small loud minority scares corporate America into screwing the rest of its customers. What McDonald's should have done was noted on its menu that the fries were cooked in beef fat. Then the vegetarians and Hindi could decide to forgo fries, just like they do with burgers.(I bet McDonald's would have sold the same amount of fries)

I remember listening to people who worked at McDonalds mourn the loss of the beef tallow. It made the deep fried apple pies EXTRA crispy and delicious. Then, they stopped deep frying the apple pies at corporate-owned restaurants, but there were a few franchise owners who still deep-fried the pies, just in vegetable oil. People used to go to those locations just to get apple pies. I wonder if there was beef tallow in the crust.

I'm old enough to remember when they used those brown glass ashtrays and when they intro'd mcnuggets and my parents didn't have to check to make sure the burgers for me and the dog were plain (because at least half the time they weren't). It should also be noted in the famous coffee lawsuit that the only money asked for was medical bills to be covered, and the original award from the jury got knocked way down on appeal.
@Saitken
@Saitken Жыл бұрын
One of the most important missed points about the coffee lawsuit is that Stella Liebeck didn’t even want to sue them, she was absolutely content to settle for the cost of her treatment and lost income. McDonalds offered her virtually nothing as a counter offer, something like 1000 dollars. It’s also worth noting that the 3 million dollar award was something like two day of national coffee sales. (And they didn’t even pay that, the judge reduced it and then an appeal came to a private agreement) McDonalds barely lost anything in the long term and ruined a woman’s life from negligence and then actively turning her into a joke.

The burgers have always come in two sizes, what in the industry are known as 10:1 and 4:1 (for the number of burgers required to weigh a pound. 1.6 ounces and 4 ounces, or 45 g and 112 g respectively.) When it seems like you're getting stiffed on a McBurger, this is because they're smaller than the competition's junior-size burger (they're 8 to the pound at most places, or 2oz/57g) and therefore seem smaller when you get one.

One of my favorite childhood memories was the laugh my mom gave when my uncle took 7-year-old me and my 5-year-old brother to Mickey D's to get us out of her hair for awhile. By second grade, I was already eating adult-size meals there (and I was a scrawny kid! Exercise and activity matters, parents. Get your kids outside...anyway, I digress.) After I'd packed away a large Quarter Pounder meal and my portion of a 20-piece McNuggets split 3 ways, my uncle said to my mom, "that boy eats like a construction worker." It became a running joke in the family for years. I didn't go into construction work though.

When I worked at McDonald's, we received shipments of burger patties once a week. The truck would pull up to the loading dock and drop endless boxes of meat down a long slide rail to the storage freezer we had. So many times I saw some of the boxes crash off of the slide rail and break open, sending burger patties all over the floor. The manager insisted (against the outraged refusal of all of us involved) that they be put back in the box and sent to the storage freezer. When we all refused, the manager would scream and shout and threaten to fire us as they picked up the frozen patties from the floor and put them back in the box. McDonald's! There is a reason Pork isn't more common compared to beef and chicken... @genghispecan
@genghispecan Жыл бұрын
No, it's reflective of a backdoor deal between McDonald's and Taylor - one of their oldest if not oldest partner. Taylor provides soft-serve equipment to ...DQ, Wendy's, BK, CFA, Culver's, and many, many others with no breakdown issues - the broken machine problem is unique to Taylor's equipment at McDonald's. The ice cream machine is not even part of the official store audit. Most franchises businesses get a choice of approved vendors for everything from grills to ice cream - but not McDonald's franchises when it comes to ice cream, Taylor is the exclusive vendor and authorized tech. They get a minimum $400-600 per service call, they make so much that a quarter of Taylor's annual revenue comes almost exclusively from servicing McDonald's machines that inexplicably "fail" their overnight heat/maint cycle. McDonald's corporate is okay with this b/c it's not costing them anything - the money comes out of the franchise owners pocket.

The fries were so much better when they were cooked in lard!!! And the cherries that were on top of the shakes ( with the long spoons to eat them with). And when the Big Mac was actually big. Should call it the Big Snack now...

I knew about the pink slime and coffee lawsuit, but had no idea about the ice cream machine and everything else!! Thank you.. makes you really think about whether McDonald’s is worth it. I’m going to go with definitely not!

How did you not mention that the original "overweight" Ronald McDonald was Willard Scott?? Ya know, the main weather dude for the Today Show for much of the '80s and '90s before Al Roker? Are our generational memories that shallow?

Had to eat at Mickey's yesterday, nothing else nearby. That was a pitiful experience, the food was tasteless, I ate C rations in Nam that had more flavor. I now remember why they are the vendor of last resort.

I worked at McDonald's in the late 60's to 70's. The meat was 100% beef and the fries where not frozen and where fried in vegetable oil. And Ronald McDonald was played by different people in different areas within the state.except the TV commercial. Who ever did this video, get you facts right!
