Thanks very much for doing a taste test for us. It all varies where you are in the world as to what you can get. So for those ones we can't get it's great to see what they taste like. I've got my own bacons and hass, but it will be interesting to try a Fuerte one day but have to find someone with a tree in Australia and that's also close by hehe.

Thanks for watching! I know Daley's fruit has them but yes Australia is huge so I am not surprised to hear. Sounds like they do very well there. It is the same here, lots of rare varieties can be almost impossible to find especially without a community of fellow growers.

Greg, I'm in Lancaster zone 8B. I have Mexicola (LaVerne nursery) and Hass (Franz nursery). I think they used Mexican rootstock because both survived 4 light snows over 3 years and they're doing quite well. I couldn't believe it either, they both took extreme cold (10F) and heat (110F). Only issue is Mexicola doesn't produce, it flowered. Hass appears to self pollinate but not very productive, got one tiny fruit that might be eaten by vermin. Of course both are As. I need type B, between Bacon and Zutano, which would you recommend for me, not for taste but for production? Btw, I tried Fuerte but it died immediately after it took sun exposure.

Thanks for the question! I think both Bacon and Zutano are excellent and consistent pollinators for Hass. Some say the B isn't necessary which is true but I have seen excellent production when people have both. Zutano is a very tough tree but it seems to be a larger tree compared to Bacon which is also a big upright. I would get a Zutano and plant in Fall if you just want a big tough tree and have space. Otherwise for flavor I like Bacon's slight nuttiness. Although the flavor is similar to Zutano, Bacon seems to be very similar in size to Hass and makes a good pair. I think either would be excellent and between the two you should have year round fruit since Hass can hang pretty much through Winter. Ok, since you are in the desert I would get a Zutano because in my experience they are very tough trees.

Now I want to try them all. I hope someday I will find them nearby. Thanks

Yes, it would be nice if different varieties were easily available. Otherwise I wouldn't feel the need to grow so many trees.

The Fuerte was my favorite but obviously Hass is an excellent avocado too. Zutano and Bacon more of a background flavor. The flavor doesn't stand out but i still enjoy them. Even if someone isn't a fan it is good to try these different varieties so they appreciate the ones they do enjoy all the more.

Hey Gregory how did your trees do in the storm? I have about 70 trees in East San Jose hills. We got battered pretty bad yesterday in the wind. Been following your channel awhile now. If I lived closer to Berkeley I’d go to Berkeley bowl
@growyourownavocados10 ай бұрын
That's unfortunate. My trees blew in the wind but otherwise enjoyed all that rain. I had to lay some granular gypsum though. There was a few inches of standing water which could have led to root rot. Luckily I added Gypsum weeks ago too.

Fuertes are definitely the best! I find that with the Hass, which we now avoid, it's very difficult to guess if they're ready - the thick skins hide many flaws. So the supplier doesn't have as much financial loss - instead the consumer gets ripped off - almost every time we've bought Hass they look okay but are rotten inside. At premium prices that's very annoying. Pity the Hass hybrid made it to South Africa at all. The Mexican ones we've seen here in SA are almost the same as Fuerte, they just look odd, but they're great.

Thanks for all your input! Yes, I just experienced this in Hawaii where they have varieties which resemble Fuerte which is very surprising because in Cal only Fuerte tastes like Fuerte. It is unfortunate that as soon as Hass is ripe if they are not eaten they go South very quickly in comparison to some other varieties.

I don't understand why avocado is compared to nuts, when I eat avo and then eat a walnut they don't taste to me anything alike or a almond, I never had a fuerte before, i grew up on bacon and zutano, but look forward to fuerte trees producing in 2 years from now and trying my first one.
@growyourownavocados11 ай бұрын
Interesting you should say that. When I say walnut it is sort of a background flavor not dominating but also not in Fuerte. Some prefer eggy but that doesn't quite do it exactly either but does describe that same flavir. I agree and see where you are coming from but these are the terms they use. Avos are definitely unique in flavor. Thanks for watching!

By the way, to me Lamorinda has the same flavor as Fuerte but produces regularly and in cold climates. I hope to do a tasting with a Fuerte soon!
