"It was in 1993 that Patrick Glaize made the roughly 26 minutes long film on Tata Guines and Zakir Hussain for french television. For my part, I was in charge of the image. Patrick had this peculiar idea of bringing those two masters of percussion together, while both their cultures and styles were quite different. We shooted in studio for one day, and a couple of days outside Paris. Without any rehearsal, the musical duo took place spontaneously. As Tata did not speak english, it is through music that the two percussionits exchanged." Bruno Romiguière.

What an incredible meeting. Afro-Cuba congas so powerful and steeped in so much tradition. The same for the tabla and India, thousands of years. Communicating across oceans and continents. The human heart beats, and the rhythm is one. 🕉 🥁 🪘 🛢

I've always loved and appreciated this doc. It shows two masters of craft doing their thing in top form....Virtuosity. Its great to see both show so much appreciation for one another. And u can see a bit of nervous awkwardness at first of course cuz of the language barrier but it soon disappears. All thats left is a mutual respect that translates into pure percussion bliss. Tata is in my Holy Trinity of tumbadores of course and although im not familiar with Zakir's music specifically, I know hes top level on his particular axe and is a true maestro. These are the giants who's shoulders we stand on. Absolutely love love love. We're definitely a fly on the wall for this one. Thanks for sharing this gem! -Guaño🐝

Thanks for sharing. That's is one of my strongest influence. Aside from Manny Oquendo; Lou Romero; Wilfredo de los Reyes and my life as a temporary in place of musicians who cancelled the gig for whatever reason. Jazz, Latin American music different timing's due to styles and feeling I've been blessed.Zakir with his knowledge and skills on the tabla drum is a master of his instruments. Great session with Tata Guinea. He recently moved on to Drummer's Heaven. It's been a pleasure to be introduced to Zakir. Blessings to you all. Please maintain the same energy. Humbly grateful for the video. Peace for you always. Daniel.

That was cute Zakir about Percussionists looking up. "You know what a unicorn 🦄 is? They are seeing it loop and fly all around." That's a Pegasus Zakir - a horse with wings. Unicorns don't fly! That rhythm really has you drunk and hallucinating. 🎉

Sometimes it takes these two percussion masters a little while to find common language and to lock in, but when they do, look out! (Ex.: 07:00). They both come from such completely different rhythmic conceptions and feelings, and yet as a drummer, I know: the initial impulse to strike something rhythmically and connect with others in primal sound is irrepressible. In the 20th century, different traditions met and danced and explored, a totally new thing with humanity due to the advent of global travel and multicultural exchange.
