Chassis: Nexon was test for EV so it carried over with existing frame. Tiago was test for mass market. The new platform (used in Punch) would surely be under development when Nexon EV Max came out (it takes time to build, test and get approvals). So it is less about they fixed mistake but more like "lets first see if people are buying it". I heard this in one of the recent interview from senior Tata person. Battery and Range: For range, Tiago EV in general consumes 130Wh/Km and with EV understood driving this can be 110Wh/KM. It being 24kWh battery the range would be 184KM and 218KM respectively. (In winters it can further come down to 100Wh/KM (240KM) and we have achieved 85Wh/KM (282KM as well)). So with 35kWh battery of Punch the numbers can 150Wh/KM, 125Wh/KM and 100Wh/KM mostly translating to 233KM, 280KM and 350KM. Build: I have Hexa and I still see the build issue in cars of that cost 😅

Another point about having the charging point where the fuel filler cap would usually go is that when parked, the car now takes up extra room on the side which is not the case when the charger is mounted up front, extra space that can be taken up by two wheelers for people with small garages.

I think we used to have the same conversation about whether I should pay ₹2L extra for diesel over petrol and the answer would be if your daily driving is more, you would recover the extra money paid for the diesel engine in the long run. The same applies here. If your daily driving is 50-100 km, you can recover the extra premium of an EV quickly. The only caveat is that EV has the range issue that diesel engines never had. So from an economical POV, EV is suitable if mostly you have a daily driving of 50-100km in the city and occasional road trips to nearby picnic/tourist spots. IMO, EVs make much more sense for cab drivers because they can easily do about 200 km daily in the city, charge the passengers the same amount as other ICE cabs, and recover the invested money quickly. For others, you are investing the extra money more for the experience and less for savings.

@meetankush11 ай бұрын
@@motorinc That does it, then, doesn't it? If someone drives 30,000km in two years, there is the cost recovered right there - in two years! And after that, it's a steep downward curve on every km travelled - ₹3 per km (worst case scenario, commercial charging, some states/outlets charging more for stations, best case would be ₹2/km) as compared to ₹4.66 per km (best case scenario of 25km/L and assuming oil price at ₹100/L, ₹10,000 in annual maintenance). What's crucial is to weigh whether people are willing to take 1 hour breaks every 3 hours to charge the battery for longer trips. My dad drives a Tata Punch AMT Creative and he gets 13km/L in city and 22-24km/L on highways. However, he drives less than 8,000km in a year now and EV isn't really a cost effective solution from there. One can make the case for added comfort in even the base Punch EV, but that base model severely limits my father's drive to the hills on weekends.

In one of your previous videos I had mentioned how on Oct 6th 2023, I had given my Harrier XZ (the OG first gen) to the Lakshmi Tata OMR (chennai) to repair a rat bite. When you mentioned "service" I had to give you an update. Short version spoiler. I still don't have my car back. Long version, after pongal holidays they did give me the car and you know how after a heart surgery a human just looks 5 years older and other organs are affected, my car feels 10 year old even though it's 4.5 year old. They changed couple of wiring harness and airbag module and somehow managed to add these issues: 1. Steerling alignment is off by 10-15 degrees (yes they delivered it like this). I don't know how the delivery driver drove it like that to my office. 2. Battery drains overnight 3. Airbag indication still persists intermittently 4. AC works but can't change temperature and many other software errors and issues in drive mode, traction control, hill hold, etc. On top of that, they lost my original RC which was in dashboard storage (I know, stupid of me to keep the OG RC there). Somehow they've also my battery cover but the bolts are there in the glove compartment. At this point, I guess any customer would go to consumer court but with everything going on in my life I just don't have the time and energy to go through that so I got the regional customer care head involved who put me in touch with the GM of this dealership who is supposed to solve all issues. I know you can't do it but if you could, I would want you to ask the TATA leadership "should I buy a TATA EV?". Because their engineers aren't trained to handle the electrical components of lesser sophisticated cars that they have. I mean why spend so much on R&D to build a chasis that's comparable to RR Phantom when in one repair their service engineers can turn a fully functioning car with couple of wiring issuees into a completely non drivable car? As I am writing this comment, I am wating for the GM who is on my case to give me an update with another excuse of why he can't deliver today because I am supposed to get it today.

They answered both the questions I had in the video. Thanks @motorinc Let me give people an interesting story about this vehicle. I booked this vehicle and after booking it, i requested for a test drive in two showrooms in bangalore. I got the worst experience even Presales. They told me the car is not launched and it was just a rumor. Please note: they said this after i finished booking the EV. I had booked it in Salem. Had to cancel the booking because of the bad way tata sales people treated me.
@motorinc11 ай бұрын
Oh no! Would love to know what the questions were. Also - do you still have the booking?
@sriramhm114711 ай бұрын
@@motorinc Despite Cancelling the booking I still don't have a confirmation on when I would get the refund. I feel they are still trying to convince me. The questions I had was - 1. Would be practical to have it as the first and only car? 2. How would the service be? I'm only gonna use the car outside the city and would probably ride 50k kms in 8-10 years. Mileage is not an issue at all, But range is. The service issue on the other hand is that, if I had a petrol car and the service centre people are irresponsible, I can go to any mechanic and get it fixed in a petrol vehicle. I can't go to anyone for an EV. I have to rely on Tata. That reliability is not something they have earned today. Also software issues scare me more. The bad service experience comes from my brother's Tigor EV. If anyone from tata reads this and thinks they can improve his experience, reach out to me and I'll connect you with him. Had charge stations brick the vehicle. Tata does send RSA? But it takes time. If this happens in any remote areas, at odd time, though the chances are very narrow, you'll feel the stress. They really need to have better people in dealerships. (This all night just be my pessimism for anyone reading. But if I'm spending 15 lacs on a car, I'm not supposed to in fear and anxiety. Just not my cup of tea. I put my peace of mind over anything else)

Automatic, powerful, safe, high seating, narrow footprint, robust and absorbent suspension, the suspension is specifically made to be 'gunned' on the worst of roads. Add to that the electric vehicle benefits, instant power and torque, and the super low running cost, and you have a winner, which is unbeatable right now. It's a mini-tank, which is fast and exciting to drive too, with almost nil running cost!

Lol was really funny hearing you both speak about tata and its legacy issues with launch events and finishing of its cars. Here’s my experience.. I am from Pune, took delivery of a Tata Tiago EV on the 23rd Dec 2023. I had done the PDI (amateur level) a week prior & everything looked fine. On 23rd suddenly got a call from the dealership that the car is ready and if I could take delivery same day. Excited, I went ahead and confirmed. Went to the dealership at around 2:30 to complete formalities while the car was being brought from the yard around 10kms out. Did the formalities and since the car had not arrived yet, I confirmed pickup for evening. In the evening delivery time, my wife noticed a couple of dents in the rear which they said they’ll fix the next day and although a bummer, I didn’t mind it much as it could happen to anyone anytime. After delivery, rode for a couple of kms to realise that the AC doesn’t work. Took it back to the dealership only to be assured that it’ll be fixed the next day. Big bummer but no option to live with it so went straight to a temple nearby for pooja. Got done with that and when i tried unlocking the car with keyless entry, it won’t work. It simply won’t unlock itself. Finally after getting a crash course on how to use the flip key on the remote (if u haven’t tried it, trust me it needs a crash course and some serious force) it finally opened and we went back home. 24th-31st the car was at the garage they call “EV breakdown center”. When they delivered it back on the 31st they assured everything had been sorted. Later found out that the AC would only work for the first 10 mins of running and then shutdown for good. Went back to the garage a couple of weeks later only to finally get it fixed after 5 more days. I’d like to state this clearly here, its a bloody good car for my purpose. But what horrible purchase experience. I mean how could the PDI team not have known the keyless entry doesn’t work once the remote is out of range for a while? How could the PDI team not know that the AC doesn’t work? Just pure carelessness completely spoiling the whole experience. And now however good the car be in the coming years, never ever a TATA again! Shouldn’t be thinking like that but it was nice to hear you guys speak about it… good to know its not just me and my luck with TATA 😅

I do not know about anyone else, but I have to force myself to pause, think on what these pundits have talked about, and then savour the understanding and the nuance that Karthikeya brings in, and the genuine manner of Shubhabrata's reactions. This is truly my steaming hot cup of coffee, best savoured in bursts. Strangely however at no points later do I think that it was an episodic experience for me, rather I see it as a 4 hour long experience with experts. Also the content makes me content at all times.

Good to hear what TATA are doing and kudos for them🙌. Buying a EV in a country like India is an hard commitment due to our demographic be it the road network or charging infrastructure. But more than all it depends on which part of the country you are in. Remote places like hill stations/ghats, coastal belt, desert acquired land, snow/Himalayas and high altitude locations are the main concerns we need to look into as most or even all the EV manufactures only target tier 1,2 cities. That's where ICE cars have improved so well over years and one should only wait to buy EV in these regions with proper infrastructure and service and a promise by a brand.

Test drove this a couple days ago for my sister's daily commuting vehicle. My biggest problem with the car is the lack of physical buttons. Almost everything is touch now. It's terrible. When I pointed it out, the guy said, "Sir, everything is voice controlled now, here's how." His voice command failed 4/4 times. It was embarrassing tbh. I had this weird conversation at the very beginning of the test-the guy was explaining variants and that there's a long range variant and there's a medium range. I was surprised and quickly said "wow 3 battery sizes!" It was awkward as he explained the smaller battery is called the medium. Well done TATA. The vehicle I drove was Tata Punch Empowered+ LR S.

I have a first gen tata Tigor Diesel (2018). The biggest problem with their dealer network is that they were never ready for so much volume+so many big cars (needs large workshops). I had once given in my car for some minor bodywork and tail lamp replacement (for which insurance replacement was approved). The car sat in their lot untouched for almost 40 days. Then they took another 14 days to actually finish the job only when I went to Tata Twitter and the HQ Escalated my issue to the service center. Love my car as a product, good ride quality, decent dynamics, always feels solid, great great great sound system (beats a base model 2023 GLE sound system, trust me have tested). But my next car cannot be a tata, too much pain in aftersales. Don't have this much time, or money, or mindspace. Need some peace of mind.

Actually Battery density and power frigures have gone up significantly over the years, so much so, that we are seeing a massive shift from NMC and other Nickel based cells to LFP based cell worldwide, which are supposed to be less power/energy dense. And yet, these new breed of LFP cells and the new battery pack architecture with a combination of electricals/electronics and software is delivering similar range/performance as the nickel based battery cells. 2023 was the first year when total LFP battery cells usage crossed the 50% mark, and it's only gonna go up. The plus is, LFP cells have 2-3 times longer life, are much less fire prone, not explosive, the only downside is they lose more range in subzero/near zero climate, but are better in withstanding heated conditions, so really a plus in all front in Indian driving condition.

I think there's a logical thinking behind why Tata decided not to include spare wheel as standard. Most people are going to drive an EV in cities only, where puncture is rare if you keep your tyre in good shape. And even if you got one you can repair it with puncture kit or simply use a tyre inflator and drive it to nearest shop easily. And even if you got a puncture beyond repair you can still call a mechanic in cities easily. But you have to have a spare one when going for a tour outside city.

@@motorinc since you guys appreciated the heads-up here's a follow-up. Despite the ugliest panel gaps that would screw up the wind tunnel metrics, best darned automotive decision I ever took. After 25 years of driving manuals, both petrol and diesels, cracked the driving code for this beauty. Regen 3 for choc-o-block traffic (1st gear) to no Regen being the equivalent of 5th gear. It's driving nirvana. BTW Tata Motors has removed the puncture repair toolkit needed to repair flats incl ancillaries like scissor jack, spanner etc from June chassis onwards. I suspect it's because of clueless customers placing the jack wrong causing the battery to dent or worse pierce, escalating the puncture into a severe problem. However, just might be for weight saving or cost cutting, as a team-bhp image doing the rounds suggests. In any case it means if my car did suffer a flat, I would be at the mercy of Tata Motors' tow-away service. Would be interesting to know if the Curvv EV comes with a spare/puncture toolkit

What I feel 5 lac upfront cost is higher if we compare current battery price from china. In india this approximately 12000 per kilowatt so for 25 kw cost of battery should be approximately 3 lac. Futhermore, their is no engine and other extra assembly and the price of motor I think should be lower than a engine. So this 3 lac extra justify the real cost in India for present scenario. Correct if i am wrong
