Meet Richard Bell, an activist and artist who challenges preconceived ideas about Aboriginal art. ‘I make art for other Aboriginal people’, says Bell. ‘I want [my art] to be empowering to them.’
Bell is member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities and makes art that addresses contemporary issues around identity, place and politics.
‘I found out that I could say whatever the f**k I wanted to in art and not get arrested’, says the artist.
In 2002 Bell published ‘Bell’s Theorem’, stating that ‘Aboriginal Art is not controlled by Aboriginal People’. Bell proposes that Aboriginal art is a white invention.

Powerful! I just learned so much from it. Richard is authentic and vulnerable as his activist cause.

A mixed race aboriginal who's art practice was funded by the state complaining about white man and invasion day-oh the irony.

you do know the reason why indigenous australians are mixed race is because the government forcibly removed them from their families and also raped indigenous women to "breed out" indigenous people. It was a government policy called 'The White Australia policy' and the stolen generation. Look it up.

ah yes, the idea that if you were supported by something you can't criticize it. a classic recipe for abuse

Mr bell. Why don't you stop talking about "art" and do voluntary work with real people . hypocrisy ???

There is a simple answer that may have eluded your clearly superior intellect. You just watched this interview. That in one week has been see by almost 6,000 people. That is probably more people than he could reach in an entire lifetime working volunteer work; which is to assume, as you have obviously done, that he doesn't offer any of his time (or money, for that matter) to the cause of indigenous rights when he isn't busy working everyday as an artist. I think what you meant to say was "shut up and disappear", not quite as brilliant as what you chose to run with, but more to the point of what everyone else hears in your tone. Good try, sir. Better luck next time.

@@henrybemis9956 I should have realised its a cardinal sin to disagree with righteous middle class socialists as one then becomes a "racist" or "fascist" or any of those myriad cliches you use to protein ct you from reality. Indigenous peoples ?? Aren't we all such or are some more than others, see Orwell essays. I am still convinced its far better to do voluntary work with mentally or physically handicapped people than make films for your own vainglory while you swear and hector everyone else. Just for a change meet real people who need help rather than your sneering lordly attitude.
