'Matisse was my god,' says Françoise Gilot, the lover and muse of his good friend and rival, Pablo Picasso.
Also a painter herself, Françoise Gilot recounts the time that Picasso took her to the south of France to meet her hero, Henri Matisse. Explaining that what drew her to his vibrant work, Gilot said it was his 'desire for finding the strongest and most simple way of expressing form and character.'

Françoise Gilot. I wish this film was 10 times longer. Listening to her memories of Matisse and Picasso. Fascinating.

I'm not an expert in the arts but I'm pretty sure those who are could only liken Gilot to Frida Kahlo except that Kahlo became more famous than the husband and it came much later, thanks to her self-portrait paintings that sort of separated her from her husband's work, and her depictions of her husband cheating on her with her own sister, as to why, maybe the gods of the galaxies elevated her. But it all started because of her association with her already-established painter husband. In her case, it was her personal association or relationship with Picasso that made her somehow a respected artist. In the same manner that Zelda Fitzgerald only became known through her husband. But their work isn't worth as much as Picasso's, or Matisse's, or Fitzgerald's in the literary world. As Gilot said during her interview with Charlie Rose in the late 90s when asked how she defines relationship, I supposed it pertained to her relationship with Picasso, and she laughed while answering, "It means power!" She doesn't mince her words, something that's admirable about her. But she isn't Picasso, or Matisse, not even close and the real art connoisseur could easily tell you that. But for a mere admirer like myself, I could only speculate.
