If you find metal shavings in your fuel filter housing. Doesn’t always mean bad news. Take a magnet and put it up to the metal shavings. If they stick to the magnet then it’s steel and more than likely your fuel pump. If it doesn’t stick to the magnet, it means its aluminum and its metal shavings from your fuel tank. Your fuel tank shaves metal everytime you put the nozzle in it at the fuel pump. I learned this from one of our master technicians and it has taught me so much.

Had a road call for a crank no start on a dd15. Pulled the fuel filter and it looked like someone dumped glitter in it. Also a good practice for a pm tech to always look inside the housing when changing the filter.

Had mine go out on me outside Louisville KY. Parked it the night at our shop next morning didn't make it they couldn't figure it out. They ran a regen on it right after it started making that exact noise again. Great video

DD pumps 250 to 300 k miles, then change it again 500 to 600. That pump and pressure compensation valve are the only thing I would call POS on a DD engine. I have one fleet that I got the drivers to start putting a quart of oil in 90 gal tanks when refueling. Maybe that will help the pump last longer.

I'm having a crank no start issue with my 2010 DD15, after changing the fuel filters & fuel/water separator it ran fine for 3 days now it won't start on it's own. It starts with starting fluid, but will not stay on nor start on it's own. I've pumped on the primer for hours & there's no pressure there as if it's sucking air.

Shirod, starter fluid could cause damage and it is not recommended. Replace fuel filters again and if problem still exist, check all fuel lines for signs of leakage.

The driver shut truck down as soon as he heard the irregular noise from pump. In most case it is recommended to replace the entire fuel system but, of course we try to save what we can.

I thought DD15 also had a inlet fuel filter to protect and filter fuel from the tank, correct? If that's the case even if contaminates did make it back to the tanks it would be filtered out.

Happen to my first freightliner DD15 at 600k miles. MY new cascadia I put hot shots LX4 addictive in it once a week. I got 790k on this pump with no issues yet. I recommend the LX4 BY HOT SHOTS to help prevent this.

@@commonman44 ads extra lubricating to the fuel system. These modern fuel pumps are very high pressure and are designed overseas that don't have the biodiesel requirements that the US has. The US has more biodiesel content which burns well but doesn't lubricant well. SO LX4 ads lubrication extending your fuel pump life.

2015 dd15, after about 4-5hrs of engine running and I make my first stop or slow to lower gear truck jumps like “I’m learning to drive stick for the first time “ only speedometer goes back and forth from 0-85 if I take my foot off pedal and reapply I get nothing, I can pop clutch to rein gauge power but it will either continue same process or finally catch and drive normal. Happens everyday, no codes, check engine comes on for 30secs or so then turns off, every now and then it will happen at high speed, also noticed my cruise control won’t work when stopped and trying to idle up, recently replaced pedal assembly but no change, any help or direction would greatly appreciated, live in Mississippi or I’d just bring it to you.👍🏽

2011 cascadia with dd15 getting lot of coolant in fuel system while running and while running losing alot of coolant. Besides cups is there anything else could be doing it. Mechanic think it wouldn't be entirely cups cause it would lock up injectors. 20 mile drive lost a gallon. Coolant was in separator. And the davco is 482 where there is no coolant running thru fuel heater. Truck has not overheated either.

Hi there i have a question and need some advise. I have 2014 freightliner coronadi 122sd with DD15. Had blown engine had mechanic swap engine got it running great at cold start but after a wile of driving chokes and blowes white smoke on low RPMS open highway runs great just on take offs and low rpms smokes and hesitates. Injectors are less than a year old with maybe 10 000 miles on them. Not loosing any coolent and its not happening all the time sometimes more sometimes less and sometimes not at all What could be causing this? Thanks

I’ve been looking for this answer for week now, I have 13 Cascadia dd15 after 1mil I did engine overhaul replaced turbo even though everything was still running good, but now my fuel mileage is 5.5 t at best running 65-70k lbs so was thinking replacing fuel pump as I never done it since I got this truck at 380k miles, no noise or any problems but it’s been so long so been trying to find out if I should spend $2k just in case but no luck so far.

This is a bad and expensive failure. I know it happened to me. You have to check the fuel injectors to ensure that the metal didn’t “kill” them. Be careful you drivers with a DD15 over 500k. It’s a good ideal to order/install a new fuel pump ~$1700 then to allow an older pump failure that will require you to have to replace most of the fuel system if it implodes.

Most of the time a vibration like that is a tire. Could have bad tire or worn from king pin or tie rob play. Once the tire is worn it’s best to replace

Ok I've got a question about a 'looping' idle that I got on my truck. I replaced the fuel pump back in November of 2019 and everything was looking and sounding nice ...until a week ago. Now it has a this looping idle with what assume is the fuel quantity valve ...I had changed that valve once before. My question is why does the fuel quantity valve fail? Bad fuel?? Bad bio-diesel?

Carbomb, I would change fuel filter and inspect fuel lines for leakage. You should not have to change PLV again if pump has been replaced. I would recommend testing the fuel system

@@TATEXPRESSINC just installed new fuel pump, disassembled fuel filter housing, fuel water separater flushed cleaned. Used a Camera with 8ft wire pushed it thru the fuel return line all the way to the T connector to my fuel tanks no metal shavings. Pumped fuel tanks out separating good fuel from bad cleaned bottom of tanks out. Put everything back together and crossed my fingers on my injectors. But so far as of 9am this morning truck is purring. No engine lights or error codes showing.

Versace, ensure there are no fuel line restrictions or blockages. Also inspect the fuel tank breather line and ensure it is free from bends or blockage. If all fuel lines check out, then a new splitter valve may be needed.

What happened when your truck hesitates to crank almost as if you chest change your fuel filters and the fuel water separator as long as you can see fuel through the glass it cranks normal. But sometimes the fuel drops lower than usual and then it takes two seconds to crank very inconsistent.

These trucks the last 10 years are disposable police volume running 3 years 300,000 miles turn them in then dumbass is going by them think they got something from a fleet that would matane them and when they get a couple hundred more thousand miles on them they turn to junk. My boss had Freightliners that were from the early 2000s that had over a million and a half miles on the untouched engine and still ran great he bought 6 2012 cascadia's with a dd15 and within two years they broke him they spent more time and dealership so you did on the road

Do not power wash or steam clean the engine bay in the area of vehicle electrical components, unless specified by vehicle manuals or service literature. Power washing/steam cleaning can permanently damage these components.

Hey guys I have a 2016 Freightliner Cascadia DD15 having a issue when driving around 68-70 mph at 1500 RPM. When slowly accelerating from that speed and RPM the truck will begin to shudder and then make a noise like you doing a injector cut out test then you hear the hood and the air cleaner intake loose its seal and you can see the hood at that time over the air cleaner pop up all this happens so quick I had to get it to do a bunch of times to figure out when and what happens when it does it. My snap on guy loaned me his Pro-link Edge with the Freight liner software. i was able to record up to 20 minutes and when it happened each time I hit the book mark so I know that it happened right before it. I have replaced the turbo cause I found the waster gate seized in the exhaust housing , throttle body found corrosion in the inlet before the blade, Intake pressure sensor and intake temp sensor checked connectors on all found all ok no signs of green or broken wires. Checked V pod when activated it sends 35 psi to waste gate. Air filter and all filters have 2000 miles on them. When I brought it freight liner when i first got this truck Nov of 2023 they replaced all the injector cups adjusted valves and exhaust brake replaced fuel filter housing. I have all the recorded logs when watching them seams that the throttle valve position drops off first then high pressure rail drops off but I never change the pedal position I specifically made sure I kept my foot at the exact position while recording. I'm going broke trying to figure this out any help would be appreciated.

I was told my Fuel quantity control valve need to be replace because engine surge a little at idle. Some time when I start the engine I hear a ticking sound for a few seconds, not while engine is running. Would I be concern about the fuel pump? My engine have 614k miles.

If there is ticking before start up than it would not be the fuel pump. Changing the QCV will stop the surging. I would check fuel filter and fault history for any fuel related faults. I have seen pumps needing replacement after QCV repair.

TAT Express Inc. I’m the only owner this truck had. The surge is be happening for over a year. I notice some bubbles inside the water separator. In the summer when I keep the truck running some times I get the check engine light and the level on the fuel water separator drops, but after I restart the engine the light turn off. I get codes, never the same one, but like I said if I restart the engine and drive away they disappear. I’m taking the truck to the shop tomorrow. Thanks for your reply and keep making videos. This just happened to me on my truck (2019 Freightliner) Friday. I also had to have a fuel injector replaced on the truck in November. Seems like I haven't had much luck with the fuel systems on it... But thanks for the information, this video was helpful.

Well they told me 11k and took half down, for injectors I’m not sure . They found metal piece in fuel lines , They’ll cleaned it up drain the diesel and reuse it . And they assured me 100%. Let’s see

Had a quick question, I have a spn 157 fmi 17 rail pressure fault. No start as well. Noticed the PLV has 212 counts so I have requested it but I'm still going to continue the diagnostic steps. Do u think the PLV could cause this fault though? The steps haven't had me check the PLV yet.

212 counts on a PLV would indicate a failure. I would troubleshoot PLV as well.

This ticking and high smoke 💨 is exactly what happened to me. I’m in a hotel now waiting got Freightliner to diagnose it. I’m sure that is the problem. I drove it 50mph for 30 miles to Freightliner though. I hope that didn’t cause more damage. I’ll find out once they call. I should have replaced the fuel pump months ago. 1.1 million on my 2009 Cascadia. She screams for money monthly. 🤦‍♂️ Thanks.

Check for external leaks if none are found I recommend getting problem troubleshot by an experienced tech.

guys i gotta a question. Should you buy a used freightliner that had fuel pump failure with metal shavings that made it into the fuel tank? the fuel pump was replaced, along with a flush of the fuel tanks, lines and replaced primed. It is very likely that the fuel shavings damage any more engine components besides the injectors in the future ? thanks

Mine failed and cost 10k to fix, new everything. Freightliner dealer put in invoice they cleaned my fuel tanks due metal. Note they left my old fuel in it. They said they filtered my fuel. 720 miles later my fuel system clogged up. Took to a different dealer, cause fuel contaminated with metal shavings. Now dealer won't pay for my repairs. Being charged 5k Including diagnostics to flush fuel system. Can i sue?
