Every tattoo artist holds the right to refuse your tattoos, but where is the line between creative freedom and elitism? I'll let you decide! Today's Tattoo Talk Tuesday I share three stories from times I was flat out refused a tattoo, from face tattoos, and tattoo hot shots, hopefully you can sit back and learn from my experiences, and maybe laugh a little bit too.

With the first tattoo story, you really should have made a point of saying that you already had tattoos instead of just leaving and not bothering. She doesn't sound like she was being rude as much as she just thought she was helping you out, you could have helped her learn something new if you hadn't just laid down and left.

That last guy sounds so greedy and unprofessional. If he works with you for 4 hours but keeps you in the shop 8 because he keeps doing other things to avoid working, he cannot demand to be paid for 8. He would've smoked those cigarettes, eaten that sandwich, taken that consultation if you weren't there, so why should you pay for having your time wasted? I hope he lost that job.

A lot of artists refuse hand tattoos on people unless they have 100% job security and are aware of what the consequences could be, socially. she wasnt being rude lol she was assuming you'd never gotten one before and only wanted a hand one to look cool

As someone who is married to a tattoo shop owner, I can tell you that artists "refuse" tattoos usually as damage control, as most people will complain if they fade away (finger or lip tattoos) or if they will regret in the future (couples). When people are told nothing can be done to fix these, they leave bad reviews, don't refer people, etc. Anything to hurt the business to justify their bad decision that was warned against. Tattoo artists want to make money and refusing tattoos is taking money out of their pocket so it's not something they do for fun

I worked at a shop for a summer and one of the artists would refuse almost everyone that he deemed "unworthy" of his art. And if he did agree to a tattoo idea he'd up the price to the point most people went elsewhere. Recently I wanted my zodiac symbol on my under boob(I got it) but it was hard to find an artist who would tattoo a symbol (Gemini) ♊️ for some reason? My friend wanted small heart outlines on her index fingers and 4 shops refused her because they said it wouldn't look good/she couldn't handle it. She has a half sleeve on both arms and I find it so weird when artists do that. So many shops around here refuse basically anything for the smallest reasons

But refusing to tattoo two people individually, getting different tattoos because they happen to be dating is bullshit. That's not acceptable.
@lizking2988

+Maighdean Gemini The thing with the cute little line tattoos that throws artists off is that it doesn't show off their skill. You walk out with their work, and that little 10 minute line work doesn't really do their name any favors. It seems weird to turn away work, but I can't say I blame them. Plus it's boring.
@donkeykickpunch1263
@donkeykickpunch1263 8 жыл бұрын
+Liz King but the thing is that if someone just wants a simple little line work piece then why is that so hard to do? So what if it doesn't show off their skill, some people don't want detailed pieces.

I have to say, I agree with not getting the hand/finger tattoos before having several other visible tattoos. She was just doing what's in someone's best interest, because it's a 'job killer'. And a lot of artists get shit from other artists in the community for tattooing obvious places on non-tattooed people. My artist always gets shit for tattooing faces/fingers from other artists, regardless of the client's profession or how tattooed they are. However she should've just asked you if you had other tattoos.. rather than just judging you with your coats on. Also, a lot of artists don't do certain body parts. I know inner lip is one of those body parts..I had a lot of trouble finding someone to tattoo my palms. A lot of people turned me away or made up an excuse not to do it. It's just one of those things that's dependable on an artists comfort level/skill level. Sounds like the artist who refused your inner lip tattoo just didn't have the skill to do it, so she made up some bullshit excuse not to do it. The 'couple tattoo' excuse is bogus. AND that last dude sounds like an egotistical asshole tbh. I'd love to know who he is so I can never get tattooed by him.

You know it's interesting, I've had a similar experience with places all over the US. It seems like there needs to be more training with how to talk to clients. You can get all sorts of info from a client if you are kind to them. I remember being harassed by artists because I wanted something small. And I'm not a mean person, I just wanted to start with something small, to see how it would feel, but no, it must be gigantic. I was told to go screw because I wanted the outline of a leaf on my wrist, the size of a quarter. I was told it had to be the size of a post it or it would melt. My other small tattoos haven't melted. So yeah, always check the reps of the artists first.

My friend who owns a tattoo shop said that this is like a rite of passage thing. Artists generally won't give hand tattoos until someone has a few others first and they don't like that its become really trendy to have hand tattoos (some people feel insulted that their art is being reduced to a trend). I'm sure that if they explained that had already been extensively tattooed elsewhere, the woman would likely have been more accomodating.

@lilithmeowmeow

My thoughts exactly. Story #1 is dumb because it's the artist just covering her ass there. If she really wanted the tattoo on her hands, she should have had the balls to disclose that she's tatted out instead of get huffy. Hand tattoos are often referred to as "job killers" because of obvious reasons.

She probably was taken aback or maybe got anxiety or something. I have anxiety and I’d probably have just said okay and left. It doesn’t sound like she made a big deal out of it (or a mountain out of a mole hill). She just decided to leave. How is that causing a scene?
@kylemendes7246

exactly the analogy making a mountain out of a mole hill doesnt work for that story at all. just saying ok and leaving isnt making it a big deal at all. maybe she was taken back by the bluntness. i still think she should have shown her past tattoos to her but it wasnt making a scene just because she didnt.

The first girl didn't even say that you weren't allowed the tattoo, she did her job at pointing out that you should try your pain tolerance before tattooing sensitive places, if you didn't have tattoos before (yes I know you have but she didn't see it) you could be really sensitive to the pain and it would be too much to tattoo the finger.. you could've just said politely that you are experienced and showed her your tattoos. :) she seemed really professional actually!

+Feedaneeshaqua Yeah because of jobs and social life. I know some places who asks you to wait 6 months and if you still want to do it, they agree to do so. I think what triggered her the most was the "we want them right now" and the covering up which made her think you were impulsive and just wanted a tattoo for fun without thinking of consequenses (which is the case many, many times).

imakefoodhappen That's fair, but artists see that stuff allll the time and it's their reputation on the line if someone regrets a tattoo or an angry parent comes in afterwards. It's not about "proving herself" at all, just like being IDed to buy booze or having to sign a waiver for something. It's just a simple interaction that helps the professional help you. Not to say she had to do that or anything, if she didn't like the vibe, but I don't think the artist was unreasonable (she might have been bitchy IRL though).
@TheZoeBird
@TheZoeBird 8 жыл бұрын
theblackcat diaries Yeah. A couple places I've been to have been very clear that they will not do your hands or face unless you are already heavily tattooed. Like it probably would have been better if the artist had asked "do you have tattoos already" rather than assuming she didn't... but like look at her, she looks super young and not someone who you would think has many tattoos. Probably 9 times out of 10 someone looking like that in fact has no tattoos and needs to be talked out of something they will regret.

People are always like "wow they're such good artists" and idolize them and want to be like them, but the artist kinda suck as business people. I hope my wording makes sense

If I had a guy tell me he would only tattoo me a certain way or a certain size and I'd already paid him, I would so throw a hissy fit until he gave me my money back or tattoed me the way I wanted it. It is MY body after all and I would have to be the one walking around with it for the rest of my life. when I got my last tattoo I basically threw a tantrum because the guy was not getting the colors right on a piece I drew myself and put a lot of thought into every detail, specially the colors. He ended up doing what I wanted. I mean, if you can do exactly what I'm paying you for, what kind of profetional are you??

And as a tattooed person I have to agree, if I had already put a huge deposit down for a tattoo and the artist wouldn't alter the design for me then I would demand my money back too. It's not that hard to resize an image and this artist was clearly just wanting more money by making the tattoos bigger. Very unprofessional!

The whole "If you feel like something's wrong, trust your instincts" thing really is true. As humans I feel like we often brush our instincts aside but sometimes you should just listen to yourself. When I got my first tattoo the place was clean, it was in a nice neighborhood, there artist was reputable, the portfolio was good and the artist had even tattooed my friend's mother. But when the day came, something just didn't feel right. My sketch was fairly uncomplicated. Mostly words. But when the artist traced it it came out really crooked. I told the him but he said it it would look good when it was finished. He got about maybe 3rd into the tattoo when he started complaining that I was bleeding too much (I had not taken any medication or alcohol).He told me that my skin was "impossible to tattoo" and that I must have some kind of terrible deadly blood disease. Naturally this freightened me, I was 16. And the tattoo I wa sleft with looked absolutely shit. It looked like something a 10 year old would doodle, and if my skin really was untattooable that meant I could never get it fixed. At least he didn't make me pay for it, though he did not apologize and insisted on blaming me and my skin/bleeding. But day or two later I got in contact with a different artist and got an appointment with her the second my tattoo had healed. The letters were unsalvagable and some stuff had to be covered up and such but she fixed me up, made it look amazing and said I did not bleed more than anyone else and that my skin was in fact ideal for tattooing. I still don't know for sure what happened with that first artist but my suspicions are that I managed to catch him at a time when he was under the influence of something and him saying I was bleeding too much and was impossible to tattoo because I has some kind of disease was probably just grasping at straws to cover his ass. So even though you do everything right, do all the research, get a place with good reviews etc you can still get unlucky. If it feels wrong it probably is.

Greywind92 Oh small one, yes, a tattoo artist can refuse to provide service at any time for any reason (other than race, gender, etc). They can refuse based on design, your mental/physical state, personal beliefs, etc. You can respect yourself and them or you can take your butt down to the Tetanus farm down the street. Either way, the artist's peace of mind is more important than a butthurt customer. Plenty of people out there to sit in that chair.

Greywind92 You are either stupid or misunderstood my point. Whether you like it or not, a tattoo artist can tell you to walk if they... 1: Are not comfortable with the placement/design as obvious by this video. This can be because of personal beliefs such not wanting to tattoo a swastika or gang signs or like what happened here even though I do agree it was ridiculous. 2: They can refuse service if you walk in sobbing over the guy you dumped 5 minutes ago or if you are stumbling in drunk/high. Much like a doctor, any artist worth their license will want to try and understand where you are coming from and make sure you are sane and of right mind. Again, might make someone butthurt but they will likely be thankful later. Some do not care and will put a dick on your forehead if you have the cash but a respectable artist will be more selective since it is their reputation and livelihood on the line. Not sure what part of that didn't click but sorry, that is the reality of the profession.

She should have asked if they had any previous tattoos before just assuming but it doesn't sound like she had an attitude about it so it would just be childish to react like that. If I was a tattoo artist and someone did that, I would just assume I made the right choice to refuse because if they can't handle a minor business dispute like an adult, then they would also be too immature to handle making a big decision like getting tattooed in the first place.

From learning about tattoo culture recently this was probably an artist whose just starting. The goal is to get to the point in your career that you can be choosy with projects. So other artists shouldn't aspire to be like that, they likely were that way in the beginning and would do anything anywhere with broad limits, and their goal is to get to the point they can refuse projects.

People forget that tattooist are ARTISTS they aren't retail workers. Their name is attached to that work, which means their career is attached to it. They have a right to refuse to tattoo shitty concepts because their career is attached to that. Just because you throw money at them doesn't mean they have to do whatever you say.

Tattoo artists generally HAVE to warn you (or at least SHOULD) about hand tattoos. I do not know any (and I know a lot) that will not refuse or warn against neck, face, or hand tattoos. If you had shown the tattoo artist your other tattoos, she probably would have been more open to tattooing your hands. Try not to be so personally offended. And rest assured she would say this to a male as well. They are an artist, and it is THEIR work. Glad you seem understanding of that at first, but then after you say this, you complain about their decision....? So you don't really understand? The only thing I can recommend is developing a good relationship with one artist that trusts your judgement and aligns with your philosophy on tattoos. Or research the artist before you go see them. It's not necessarily what it takes to get tattooed, you just need to put more time into research if you are looking for a certain type of artist with not many rules.

For the first story, I'd really have to agree with the tattoo artist there. Some shops refuse to tattoo the face and hands as they may be hard to cover up for job interviews, and for some, having arm tattoos beforehand may be a sign that you have experience with tattoos, such as having a job while having tattoos, or maybe a very safe job that you wouldnt lose if you had visible ink. You should've communicated the fact you were already tattooed, if you wanted the tattoo that badly that wouldve been a better idea than just walking away.

When I went in, I was presented this beautiful piece he wanted down my side, instead of the very small rib cage design I had drawn up for him. Instead I moved in to my thigh and went ahead with the tattoo anyway, and I have to say I love it. Every once in a while I do get little bits of anxiety knowing that I have this massive piece on my thigh that I actually didn't put much thought into, but at the end of the day it's a unique design, and I am very proud to say it's on my leg.

to everyone saying the tattoo artist was in her right to refuse the hand tattoo: she shouldve asked her if she has ever been tattooed before! its not right to assume that someone has never had the experience just because you dont see any tattoos (jacket, jeans, whatever). she was not professional in her decision to refuse because she just automatically assumed rather than bothering to ask a simple question. it would be okay to refuse the tattoo if she was correct in her assumptions but she was not.

She didn't refuse to do the tattoo, she just refused to do it on her hand. Mostly because hand tattoos will fade away and not a lot of first timers know that. And she said in the video that after the women said she won't do the hand tattoo she just leave, so really the tattoo artist can't really say anything.

The guy I go to has a $50 deposit no matter what you get(his lowest price for tattoos is $60-70). He knows a huge amount of money isn't right, especially if he presents someone with a piece they don't want, and they can't negotiate a proper fix. That way, he gets paid for the time he scheduled with the person, but doesn't have some huge sum for a tattoo that was never done.

HeartagramObsession LOL Oh, he does payments for people who have an expensive tattoo as well! XD He is VERY good, and works VERY fast(but not sloppy in the least), so his hourly rate is really the least of anyone's worries. He charged $50 per hour, and the rest(aka, the majority of the price) is up to how big the tattoo is, and how much detail/how much ink is going to go into it. He's insanely good at judging that stuff.

+Rory Turing Sounds like your artist and mine would get along super well. Met him after my first tattoo turned into a horrid mistake. I was very stupid when it came to who did my first. Went to a respectable shop...who told me the new kid had been there for years and showed me work that he'd painted, not tat'd. Charged me a 400 deposite, and another 100 for each hour spent. Kid destroyed my inner arm and left with no intention of returning for a touch up. Met my current artist a week later at work. 30 years in, still cracks jokes and every new piece is a blast. Doesn't even charge a deposite, just goes by the work he put into the tattoo and just chilling with him. Never a dull moment with him.

Zrozex I would guess that you are young. Tattoo artists are people too, and they have the right to refuse to do a tattoo that they don't feel right about. And YES, you might have to get thirtyeight tattoos before an artist will do your hands or face. It demonstrates your commitment to your body art. NO ONE will start with hands or face, with some sleazy exceptions. There's not a tottoo artist in the world that has to tattoo you upon asking for one.Trust me, it will be hard for you to get a job in the professional world. You never know what you might do in the future. You may not believe it now but you will understand in the future. Said just like your mom might say it. Pretty sure she already had her 666 tattoo which is on her fingers, going in to get the knot. I think a little knot is much more harmless and innocent, than the 666 she already had on her fingers. Also the tattoo artist was much too quick to judge, for all she know her body could have been covered in tattoos and piercings without a single visible spot of her skin under her jacket.

masha5maria1965 Personally I don't think its that big a deal either. If she wants to FU a potentially fabulous career at her age, fine, let her. But tattoo artists have the right not to do just as they have the right to do... whatever they want. This girl certainly doesnt have any credentials to be talking about tats/ She proved it by whining about being refused a tat. Could be that the artist didnt want to tat her because he or she just didnt like her attitude. They have that right.

Lady, this isn't 20-50 years ago where having a tattoo virtually labeled you a degenerate. Tattoos are VERY common and accepted in most businesses now, so long as they aren't crude or distasteful. There are very few places that will actually turn down someone strictly for being tatted. And while it is always good that a tattoo artist warns caution with certain tattoos, there should not be a limit on how many tattoos you've had before you can get "this or that". That is discrimination. Go back to the prehistoric age you came from. This is 2016.

The artist owes you an outcome. The deposit should only be kept when the client didn’t come to the appointment, because this appointment could’ve been given to another person and the artist would’ve lost money and time. But she came to the appointment and she wasn’t happy with what the artist made for her. And that was his fault because he obviously didn’t listen to her and wanted her to guilt trip into a tattoo she didn’t want. Of course she could’ve vocalised that but as she said, he told her „this or nothing“. This is super unprofessional and does not give him the right to keep the deposit because he destroyed this appointment for himself. Because he was too ignorant to listen to his client

In all fairness, in regards to the girl in your first story. She denied you because you don't have any uncoverable tattoos. You have one arm and one leg that are both pretty covered, but you can put a jacket on and look like you don't have any tattoos. Tattoo artists don't want you to get a tattoo and end up having issues finding employment because you're not really capable to cover your tattoo. She wasn't being rude about it. That is common practice in the industry. Be happy that she was adult enough to tell you no, where some other scumbag could've just seen you as a dollar sign and done it to someone who had visibly no uncoverable tattoos. Just a different perspective that you may not have looked at.

NEVER pay a large deposit for any piece unless you are comfortable enough with the artist to trust their vision. I don't care how famous they are. The people who require large deposits are usually people who've had a lot of people flake on them, and probably for good reason. If your artist isn't excited about the piece you want done, go somewhere else.

I'm lucky enough that my skin doesn't eat up the ink that quickly but I have seen loads of examples of finger tattoos fading where they look really terrible. My friend after seeing my finger tattoos turning out so lovely got finger tattoos herself and they just look so faded and bad :( They're extremely painful on the fingers too so I don't blame the artist for refusing them at all. If she really wanted them done she should have just shown her arm tattoos and insisted upon it? Tattoo artists know their shit usually. I did a lot of research on finger tattoos and understood the risk before getting them as well as making sure I took care of them the way the tattoo artist says you have to.

The artist who did my first tat, did not like doing couples but I was a ink virgin so he agreed. All i wanted was a little star, with a think outline. He tried to talk me in to some color but I had decided long ago I only wanted black and white tats and he understood. The shop he was at was new, it had only been open a week or so and the only chair they had was a metal folding chair. When I sat backwards so he could get to my shoulder, besides the fact the shop was freezing, the chair hurt my hips and I said this chair is not going to work, and the shop was freezing. The woman who owned the shop grouched at me but my artist, grabbed his hoodie and told me to put it on backwards and got it so it was saving me from the AC and out of his way, then he found me a different chair from the abandoned offices that were up stairs. He spent a hour tattooing my 2 inch by 2 inch star, the whole time he kept telling me how he had never had skin take the ink has nicely has mine, how still I was and to keep breathing. Even the grumpy lady who owned the shop was surprised with how my skin was "loving the ink" I left with a $30 bargain tattoo, and a boyfriend who thought I was going to dump him for a tattoo artist, and in retrospect I should have.... I still love my star and i'm looking for someone I trust to do a matching one on my other shoulder, my artist moved on and I can't find him. BJ I know your out there somewhere.

The last artist was a Jerk too bad you don't share his name to help others avoid him. Tattoo story - about 20 years ago I was in Vancouver BC for my sister's 25 wedding anni. I wanted a commemorative tattoo as a visit to the city with my daughters. So my brother took me to a shop ( don't remember the name) I wanted a cross on a chain around my ankle with the cross laying on the top of my foot. The artist refused to do it. He told me that no self respecting artist in the City would put a tattoo on a foot because after time it would wear of and that would show poorly of their art. So whatever I shook my head and thought shit I'm going to die one day, then what happens to your art ?? Meh I never did get the tattoo. The moment was gone. But I do have many others but none on my feet lol

My daughter had to pay an artist upfront, not even just the deposit, explained very clearly what she wanted, went away allowing him to draw it up first, came back and it was not anything like she wanted, he wouldn't change it, wouldn't give her any money back, wouldn't let her keep the drawing.So she never went back to that artist/salon, told her tattooed friends about it as a warning about the guy, and found a really great artist that was willing to work with her.She has a large tattoo of an angel in a swing on the center of her back, the artist I think took a picture of it to enter it into a contest, he did a really excellent job and you could tell he was very pleased with his work and her experience too.It was worth the money to not get a bad tattoo and a good object lesson on how to find a good tattoo artist.

As someone with tats as well, those 2 stories I'm with the tattoo artists. Fingers, face and neck do affect you when looking for a job. As horrible as it sounds. the artist said the "get a tattoo on your arm first." as a cover. Even though you guys were getting it separate, you were still a couple getting tattoos. My thought as I heard this was, "If you break up, you'll have the reminder of that guy with that tattoo. I'm with the first 2 artists.

+Veronica M Agreed the first two are fairly legit. It is totally cool if you want to get a couples tattoo or tattoo'd together, but I get why some artists are worried or uncomfortable doing it. There are other artists who are into it as long as they know you and know that you'll be ok with a tattoo you got with an ex etc etc. The 3rd dude though sucked, so congrats to her for walking out. Yes, sometimes tattoos need to be bigger to fit what you want into them, but this spider was obviously not the case. Some artists just have larger styles and that is cool, but if you are unable to do a smaller piece and that is what someone wants then you should tell them so upfront before taking a deposit. Finding an artist who will work with you and help make the design what you want is key.

As a tattoo artist I understand that customer service is just as important as the art I put on your body. While it's okay as an artist to recommend getting something larger/smaller or in a different place, it's NOT okay to refuse to do something just because you have a "my way or the highway" mentality. Research your artist, don't be afraid to say no or ask for something different. If they refuse, find someone better. :)

Never even encountered more than a $35 fee for an extensive(full leg) original concept just for his time -the artist freely gave a copy to me to go home between then & the apt to make sure it was perfect. He also will include the work in his portfolio but considers it my "intellectual property" and would not give anyone the same piece without express permission. There are also a ton of artists that just refuse to tattoo certain areas for job reasons, or because it makes them uncomfortable. I mean, the artist's choice is the artist's choice. that artist probably wasn't experienced in smaller tattoos.

I appreciate that tattoo artists are willing to tell people no. Trust and believe that these artists want to make money so the fact that they are turning someone down shows integrity.

If I was in the situation in the 1st story I would've shown my tattoos to her. I'm not a confrontational person but people misunderstanding me just grinds my gears...

"I do see my tattoo all the time, everytime I talk." how do you see your inner lip everytime you talk lol. Anyways, those tattoo artists sound rlly annoying. I was really hoping you would have flashed your tattoos at the first artist and be like "Oh, you mean like this?!" or come back two days later and be like "Hey, we're back with the tattoos you wanted us to get first, can we get our hands done?" Lol that would have tripped her out.

That last guy literally STOLE from you. What he did can't be legal. He can't just take your money.

He can just take her money. He has to get paid because it's an appointment. It's like making a commitment. He basically loses money if it isn't set this way but he should of tried to make the tattoo the way she wanted it. He was an ass.

+Estefani Arteaga No, that's not how it works. The deposit shouldn't have been so much. It's like a hotel. If you don't cancel within three days, you don't have to pay for the entire trip you booked- just one day and tazes and a resort fee if they charge it. Things happen, emergencies happen, and it's part of a business. Especially in this case. Keeping $100 of the deposit? Maybe. All of it? no.

I'm absolutely in love with my artist. He is a little pricey, but he is quick, gentle, sweet, and very talented. He works with me and tells me what would be better or accommodates my wants and needs. He is the first artist I've been to and will remain my favorite and most trusted artist.

In the first story I agree I always tell people to not start on your hands because it's a hassle when it comes to hiding them for professional occasions / scenarios . I've been denied 2 jobs strictly for my hand tattoos and no I don't regret them but I def. regret starting there
