You forgot ( or missed) the fact that the coil machine needs slightly different setup to use cartridges. I help my machine to save on voltage by bending my back spring slightly towards the front coil core. When the cartridge is installed , it pushes the plunger and the armature bar up and create desired tension. That way your machine doesn’t need as much voltage to do the job done like with the usual setup.

I got to say, you are the BEST person on YT for teaching beginners to tattoo 👍. I personally spent a year doing a tattooing apprenticeship full time in a studio, and even though the guy teaching me was a great tattooist, he sadly didn't have good business sense and the studio folded! Unfortunately at the time I couldn't find anyone who was able to continue my training, so I ended up just getting a job back in the construction industry. Watching your videos have given me back the inspiration to give it another go! At the studio I was at the stage in which my mentor was allowing me to tattoo friends for free, and I was supplying my own equipment, so not set up cost had to be covered. I originally purchased a tattoo kit from a professional tattoo supplier, but even then I was disappointed with the quality of the equipment I received in the kit! I have recently started again building up my equipment by hand selecting what equipment I purchase, and NOT buying a kit this time! The biggest learning curve for me was, just because you buy a starter kit from a professional company and not ebay, it doesn't necessarily mean you will get better equipment! I ended up with ebay Chinese quality equipment, but at a professional tattoo shop price! Thanks for all your time and effort, and also thanks for giving me back the inspiration I once had 👍. All the best, Neil.

I find that even some good companies will still sell some crap equipment.

@@TattooUniversity Hi Nick, yes but because of your machine building videos it has taken out a massive percentage of the worry! Because even if I purchase something that not the best, I now have the confidence to be able to make it massively better. I personally think the biggest problem is that so many people want to buy cheap machines, and then wonder why they don't run perfectly straight out of the box! Like the old saying goes, you get what you pay for! You can't expect a $20.00 machine or a £20.00 machine, depending what part of the world you are from, to run like a $400.00 machine. But with a little bit of knowledge and understanding, it is possible to get something that will work and suit your budget! I recently purchased a matching set of 3 hand built tattoo machines from a guy on ebay, they are J Walker style frames in which he has put together using some lovely coils and some custom parts. Due to the three machines only costing me £79.00 for the set I decided to take the chance, all I can say is WOW! This guy has apparently been making and selling custom made tattoo machines for over 20 years, and when I got them back the first thing that struck me was their weight! I noticed a while ago now, cheap Chinese machines tend to be very light and just feel cheaply made. So sometimes you can get a bargain on ebay, and when you aren't spending a lot of money, you haven't got a lot to loose! But if you are going to invest a large sum of money in a machine, I reckon without a shadow of a doubt buy from a professional company! Ebay is fine, the problem comes when people try selling fake equipment at original equipment prices, WHICH IS WRONG 100%! You just need to be able to use your noodle, and if something seems too cheap to be true, it probably is! Like I have been seeing Intenze ink for £1.80 per bottle from China!!! You would have to be a total IDIOT to believe that this was genuine Intenze ink. Equipment from ebay is one thing, but tattooing ink and needles is something VERY different! Thanks for getting back Nick, all the best, Neil 👍.

What I tell people to do is make sure the company will refund your money. I take photos and tell the companies why the equipment is garbage. Usually I get a quick refund. If more people send back the garbage equipment the company will stop selling it. I can find a million things wrong with most of the cheap machines.
@TattooUniversity6 жыл бұрын
I agree. You can only make a cheap machine work if you know what to do with them. Some cheap machines aren't worth fixing up. Too many issues to try and fix. I've thrown away machines that were beyond fixing. Scrap them for parts. I actually like the lighter machines. My preference is the cast aluminum machines. Just what I'm used to. I would give a beginner a kit so they could tear it apart. Not really for tattooing. Just a learning tool. You can get a decent machine from a builder for $100. I don't trust buying from ebay myself for inks. I will only go through a trusted company on inks. If you can get a deal on a machine that is great. Just know that there are a lot of shady people out there that will sell you crap for a lot of money. If you can get it cheap it is worth the chance. I like using someone who will pay me back if I don't like what I get.

Standard needle - Coils, Cartridge manufacturs have inconsistent tension depending on membrane/rubber band internals. Good luck with a rotary with give or coils with give. Nice video really shows a good breakdown of the two machine differences thanks.

I haven't had any problems using disposable cartridge tubes on my coil machines. Although since getting a few neo tat vivace machines and a xion I find myself only using cartridges in the xion. I don't like lining with any cartridge that I've used. They all have too much wiggle in the tip for me. Like I want to put a rubber band around the dug out just to put extra pressure on the needles to hold them still. I did see killer ink now has some cartridges with a diamond tip that I may try. I always used diamond tipped tubes for lining. But I've went to using nothing but black claw Hella tight liners and enso apex hollow liners on the neo tat machine to do all of my lining and the xion for everything else with cartridges. The neo tat machines have such a perfect linear stroke for lining and the built in clip keeps that needle bar held down tight. I've never had such ease doing a single pass thick bold black line than I have while using the neo tat and 6 or 8 hollow enso apex needles. And then the xion is just a dream to shade with.

Hi fk irons do a great video on setting up cartridges on coils. They take the resistance off the rear spring and allow the resistance of the cartrige to act like the rear spring and push the armature bar up to the contact. Great video thanks

Thanks for that tip, thinking about what you just said that makes perfect sense due to the spring in the cartridge 👍. I have been wanting to try cartridges for a while now, and would love to try out the Cheyenne pen. Unfortunately NOTHING on this planet would justify me spending £850.00 on a tattoo machine set up! I have decided to try a much cheaper hibrid tattoo pen from Solon tattoo supplies, and if I really like the way It works and feels, I will try to pick up a second hand Cheyenne! Unfortunately I have watched a number of Cheyenne reviews, and apparently even these top quality pens have a tendency to break down at least once a year if used on a daily basis, so it's advisable to have a backup! Considering that just the pen is around £550.00, I reckon I'll have half a dozen or so!!!Lol.😆 Thanks for the tip, Neil.

Hi. Thanks for the videos! I have a question.... when you put your finger against the bar it simultate the resistance of the skin and you can see the needle going a lil back. Is this the give? And am I allowed to use a little bit of force to get the needle into the skin when the machine has give? I made bad experience with direct and hard hitting machines. Thanks

Great video. Just an observation what if u add an extention on the niple so u don't have to turn up the voltage
@darrenconnor9456 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video. I thought it was just me having problems with the cartridge system with coil machines. I found they stopped frequently. I thought it was because I was basically adding a spring system (the cartridge) to a spring system (the machine) I have a liner, packer, shader purchased from a builder that work brilliantly with the standard needle bars. I purchased a Cheyenne grip and plunger to use cartridges with these machines and found that the cartridges wouldn't move at all. I will remove the rubber band. I did find I had slightly more success with it by upgrading my clip cord. (might just be a coincidence)
@TattooUniversity6 жыл бұрын
a bad clip cord will restrict voltage. If you power supply is saying 8 volts you might only be getting 4 volts to the machine
@bonmansueto72516 жыл бұрын
is it true that using cartridge needles/pen type machines is less painful than using coil machines/standard needles?
@TattooUniversity6 жыл бұрын
I don't think there is any difference. It is still a needle going into the skin.

You need bigger capacitor on coil machine and really big stroke ( big magnums 25mag+ ) to run it smoothly. But what os the point of run cetriges on coils take a f..kin bar needle. Dont be lazy. Cartrige sistems are for rotarys and if you wanna have more soul on machine take coill with traditional needles. Cheers.
