Totally love it. Sort of how the album would have been like.New gold dream version of Sparkle. However,producer Lillywhite cracked the sound open wide as he did for U2 and so many other bands in the 80s and beyond.The guy is a genius. Thanks again for this rare gem.

Very interesting raw sketches of these songs. They show the SM trademark interplay between Charlies guitar and Micks shimmering synth sound. Drum machine and sequencer also give the for SM characteristic "motorik" beat, adapted from bands like Can and Neu!. Compare this to the final mix, where all this is almost completely lost. Jim said in an interview that he did not want to make a New Gold Dream part 2. Well I rather had that then what we got : a U2 War Part 2.

Oh if only Steve Lillywhite had let them do their thing with this track. The album would have been so much better if he had let them free up with the electronic stuff. This is so much like Tangerine Dream and so far ahead of its time, predating trance by eight years.

100,000,000% agree with you. They were complicit in letting him stomp all over their beautiful, impressionistic art rock/electronica with massive drums and blamming guitars. At the same time U2 were heading into SM territory with Eno & Lanois, the Minds went in the opposite direction and fucked up their sound. Shame on all concerned. No wonder Derek left them

SM were trying to make music for stadiums. LIllywhite was hired to change their sound. It's not like he had them over a barrel or something. SYLTM is actually my favourite by the them, but in this arrangement it wasn't going to work in a stadium, it's too shifting and busy. That said, they definitely should have completed this as an alternative mix for the 12" or something.
@nutster9000
@nutster9000 5 жыл бұрын
@@Isi-1975 You are exactly right in what you say In fact did you hear Charlie & Jim speaking to Steve Wright the other day & that is more or less what they said, that they wanted to make music that would sonically fill stadiums. At the same time Lillywhite did steer them in a rock direction while Charlie Burchill initially didn't like the direction the sound was going. It's great that they do the full on synth version of this at shows today though. Brilliant band & they deserve all the credit they get!

In September 1983, Simple Minds travelled to Monnow Valley Studio in Rockfield, near Monmouth in Wales,[17] for three weeks to work on some new material; Lillywhite accompanied them for the last two weeks to meet the musicians and suggest some modifications to their music.[18] This material consisted of around six tracks developed during a session the band had spent at a recording studio called The Chapel in Lincolnshire in January,[17][18] and other initial samples recorded in London's Nomis Studios before their performance at Phoenix Park.[18] At Rockfield, most of the tracks were dramatically changed, as they had begun as demos consisting only of work by Mick MacNeil and Charlie Burchill, with some drum and bass machine sounds overlapping.[18] With drummer Mel Gaynor now having fully integrated himself into the band, the songwriting was beginning to be influenced consistently from all group members.[19]

While I love the epic Lillywhite-produced album mix, this demo is very cool - much more electro-synth-Euro-dark feel - it would be cool for SM to remake/remix this song in 2015 and release it as a bonus track or b-side...that is, if there are b-sides any more.
