The Jason James tattoo at 3:34 is really funny to me. I love the original tattoo, however back when I was trying to build a portfolio to get my apprenticeship. I worked with a guy who claimed to draw, but never really wanted to chat about art, just would ignore my comments and show off his "drawings". The only good one I ever saw, which he ended up getting someone to tattoo on him, happened to look very familiar. After a bit of pondering I found the original and realized he just copied that Jason James tattoo. So that particular design will always bring joy to my face when I see it, thanks to that wonderful memory of an old co worker.

On the copying front, is there like an ‘ok for general use’ or public domain with traditional flash?
@Maudtattoos8 ай бұрын
Most old flash is considered okay 👌🏽 to tattoo, there’s also places where you can get new flash, like Flash Tattoo Collective, they have a ton of flash sheets and on their website they say you can use those designs to tattoo….but ONLY to tattoo.

So I really have no idea how tattoos work, I have a mistake that was made at 18 and its hideous. I think they just gave me the dude on his first day.... That first one with the "head slices".. it really bugged me. Style was fine, tattoo was fine (although I do agree with ponys critique points), but that was not one head that was just sliced up - if you put it all together, I mean. The slice with the nose on it. It just doesn't line up. The bag under the eye, width of the nose, viewing angle of the nose... to a lesser degree, the ear I know it doesn't take away from the tattoo at a glance, and it might just be my ADHD artist brain that can't stop poking at it. But yea.. it bugs me
@tarasdyatel12078 ай бұрын
@PonyLawson for the one In the first critique, how come, you wouldn’t use a soft edge they considering where the light source is coming from why would you want to have a thick outline all around if you’re going for a more realistic design. Is it because you want longevity of the tattoo and that would look better instead of what is correct? Thanks! - new tattoo artist been working at a shop for 6 months, did a. 1 year apprenticeship
@soude858 ай бұрын
The outline of an object is still an outline on your skin, no matter where the light comes from. Even if it’s a thin black line, it makes it look so much cleaner. Maybe you could just try it out with some of your designs in Procreate, add an outline and see how it looks.✌🏼

There are only two instances where copying another artist's work are acceptable: 1: If you contact the original artist and get explicit permission to copy. Not the person who has the tattoo, the original artist. 2: Original artist is dead. In my particular case, I would need a super long-distance Ouija board to contact the original artist of my tattoo. They died more than 2500 years ago.

Everybody starts somewhere and I do tattooing on the side too because not only do I go to college but I also have another full-time job that pays for my supplies to do the tattoos, and it’s also extra bread in my pocket. I feel like you shouldn’t judge somebody’s lifestyle that you don’t understand. If you look at medieval tattoos as well as woodcut designs, you'll find that hatching is considered to be more of a "shading-esque" design. I don't understand why you're coming on KZbin to a critique video and then being so harsh. Pony is actually very talented, but he also doesn't pretend to know everything and goes about humbling himself. Tattooing isn't easy.
