Taurus 692- Triple Threat Revolver 38 Special, 357 Magnum, and 9mm

I noticed the error between 6 and 7 shots. I'm used to shooting 5 round snubs so I always end up doing the math with a 7 round revolver wrong. In my case this was going from the Taurus 605 to the 627 Tracker.

Yah I almost made a comment to point this out and then decided to see who would find it first. If you notice I dropped out a round and only shot 6. I have no idea how I missed that in the moment or the dozens of times I went through it in editing…good grief. Sorry for the mistake!!

I suspect I'd automatically stop at six too. Since I only shoot revolvers for fun now, and I don't have a KZbin channel, I don't have a reason to try anything else. Hooray for metallurgy and technology, though, stretching the revolver out to seven and eight rounds.

I bought my 692 during the shutdown in 2020 and have put so many different rounds through it. There’s also something I’ve experimented with shooting 357 mag .38 special and.38 Super +P in the 357 cylinder and 9mm and .380acp in the second cylinder. This gun is so versatile and has never given me any issues I have the 6.5 inch barrel and automatically swapped out the pistol grips with hogue grips

A little heads up for you folks regarding these Taurus wheel guns, do not buy them from any online source, do not buy them absent a thorough inspection, making certain all screws are in place, and not loose, and that the cylinder slop (which all Taurus revolvers have in abundance) is kept to the minimum, and especially pay close attention to the triggers travel, as in make certain its NOT slamming into the trigger guard when pulled!!! My 692 did this, and Taurus tried to tell me such was fine, its not fine, its metal slamming into metal, one a piece of MIM steel, the other forged steel, and sooner or later, the trigger will fracture on you! Indeed after they told me it was in spec, I returned to gun shop and after demonstrating the defect for the gun smith , we then proceeded to inspect every Taurus revolver he had new and for sale, six of them, two 605's, two 856's and a pair of 627 Trackers, three of the wheel guns were fine, and three had exactly the same defect I had, the trigger slamming into the back of the trigger guard on completion of the pull! That is a 50% defect rate on that little issue alone, likely meaning nationwide that half or so of all of their wheel guns are defective right from the box!

Enjoyed the video. I had considered a Tracker 44/Smith M69 at one time, but decided to go the 10mm route. Just a thought, consider getting 38/357 dies and load fun 38 spec. range ammo. I've shot a really decent bunch of lighter wadcutter loads, super accurate, super fun. Anyway, the rim might really bump up the reliability and convenience. Can do the same with .357 brass, but then have to fiddle with the seater. I really like my revolvers, shoot them regularly, thanks again.

357 Rat shot should work well on snakes. But the effective is going to be measured in feet not yards. The rifling tends to open the pattern fairly quickly. I bought my 6" Taurus 689 about 30 years ago and it's still my favorite revolver. It travels with my Marlin 1894c. I've been looking at picking up a 692. But right now, we're getting ready to retire, so I'll probably wait until then. Thanks for a great video.

I just watched a video where they used a chronograph on the same same gun. The velocities ranged from a little over 750 for 38, about 950 for the 9mm and north of 1200 for the 357. You seem to have too high expectations for your groupings. That is a wide range and without zeroing each caliber your groupings were DAMN GOOD. I have a Ruger 357/38/9mm Blackhawk with a 6.5" barrel.....I wish I could consistently shoot that well....Every single shot would have been a deadly head shot....every shot would have been DEAD center mass! Nice shooting. The Taurus was my first choice BUT living in California it is not on their approved handgun roster 😞😞😞

Yeah ostensibly it is a "safe" handgun list. What it actually is an infringement on our 2A rights. If it is about safety I am still waiting for someone to explain to me how a modern double action revolver with a transfer bar is not as safe as a handgun can be. What it actually is an infringement on our 2A rights. To have a gun added to the list a manufacturer must pay over 100K AND remove 2 existing models from the list! At the moment I believe there is just over 400 models of handguns on the list. This is why we cant get a Gen 4 or 5 Glock. Glock is a great example. I have a black Glock 17 Gen 3, If you wanted that gun in Tan well sorry it is not on the list because the model number is slightly different than the black version which is on the list. So according to Kalifornia a black Glock 17 Gen 3 is safe BUT a tan Glock 17 Gen 3 is NOT safe! How the hell has this not be challenged in court and overturned? Sorry for the rant but gawd I hate this state. @@triggerbarPhD

At the top of my wish list. I want it for a trail gun. Like that it's 7 shot and 3". Also the multi caliber capability. However I have some reservations about relying on 9mm in a revolver. I have an LCR in 9mm, probably have put 400 rounds through it and had one malfunction, jam, stuck cylinder rotation due to one of the projectiles vibrating out off the casing. A very rare thing, so I read, but it can happen. Ok for practice, but would stick with 357 on the trail.

AWESOME! I've done more vids with this than anyone else and have a lot more I have already filmed. Recent one was POI Accuracy w .357/9mm/.38! I run a lot of realistic multiple attacker drills with it too. Is that just a standard large frame tracker judge Grip?

On the grip, I'm not sure. I don't believe it was anything special. It's a hogue grip and I don't remember any issues in matching it. I like it better than the taurus standard grip.

Looking in my Lee reloading manual. The difference between 9mm 124 gr and 38 special 125 gr is only 14 fps with both shooting XTP bullets the edge going to 9mm with the lighter bullet.

Wow , it doesn't suck shooting the 9mm , lol . I had watched people shooting this revolver in the past and 9mm was going wildly off target , kinda like a sabot being shot out of a smooth bore or like shooting the 6.5 Carcano with modern ammo ( that Italian round is actually like 6.8mm[0.268"] whilst 6.5mm ammo today is 0.264" so an 0.04" difference between the Italian and American 6.5s ) . So the reason they claimed the 9mm was going so wildly is due to the 9mm being 0.02" smaller but I'll have to watch more videos to see if maybe someone got bad guns .

Interesting. I have not seen that with mine (including off camera). I saw some variation in my next video on this gun but that was shooting 38 super (not a typo). But I saw that with the velocities being all over versus accuracy testing.

@triggerbarPhD That was my thinking. Plus, the cartridge brass is always supported by the chamber unlike an auto. This could be one very versatile gun. I'd like to see if the cylinder is built to headspave on the case mouth. If not, 9x21, 9mm win mag and several others could be a possibility.

I would like to know how the gun will hold up over time, firing the 9mm. Most videos I see people just try it out for a few rounds, which make sense, but I wonder how it will work over time. As the 9mm cartridge is shorter and the bullet is ever so slightly smaller than the barrel, I wonder how that will affect the gun over time. Both in terms of cleaning as well as wear and tear. It seems that the slightly too wide barrel doesn't affect accuracy, right? I am very interested in these "convertible" revolvers as they are so versatile, but I just want to make sure it isn't a mistake in the long run.

That’s a great question and I don’t have tons of rounds through mine either, especially with the 9mm side. Most of my shooting has been 38 spl and 357 mag. I plan to change that but don’t think it will be materially more (thousands of rounds). Accuracy seems pretty good with the 9mm, not worse than 38 or 357 at least.

Since the 9mm has a smaller slug compared to 357 and 38 special, will it not destroy the barrel grooves since it will floating in the barrel rather that rotating within the grooves?

I believe it’s still in contact with the grooves I don’t believe the size difference is enough to make it float. Also I would also think that would impact accuracy but it doesn’t appear to do that either. But it’s a good question and should be explored!!

I’m not an expert on this but it looks to me like they don’t sell one with an interchangeable 38spl/357mag-9mm cylinders and the cylinders are fluted on the 627. Just checking the Taurus website they list an interchangeable barrel as an option to select on the model but they say that configuration isn’t available-so I read that as they don’t offer that for the 627. Hope that helps!

Have one of these fine revolvers and quickly learned that messing with moon clips using just fingers ain't gonna work. So, searching around for the solution found this fine tool specifically the BMT MOONER T9-7. Makes loading and unloading the clips super easy. Haha, I like that you tried to hide the fact you only shot 6 rounds! At 3:30 you can see a grouping of 6 holes but went ahead and counted 1,2,3,4,5,6,7! Hopefully you didn't count the blaze orange bulls eye as your "7th" shot 😂. So close! On the internet we call that "girl math". I get it though, you'd have to to back and edit the video or even go back to the range to do another take. Might as well stretch the truth by one round!

I can honestly say I wasn’t trying to to hide anything. As surprising as my terrible math can be the mind plays tricks on you when you think there are 7 shots. Just finished editing a gel video and I thought while the camera was rolling I had two bullets in the gel because that’s what I expected see. But nope, only one in there. I caught it later but not at the time. It’s funny because after a year this is still the most commented aspect of the video. If I had caught it, I would have put a comment in as I do so often in my other videos correcting myself. I just honestly missed this. Don’t know how. lol. But did you notice my opening I was wearing different clothes than the rest of the video? Lol, just saw that this time when I was looking at your comment. Yes for sure. You’d shoot it out of the same cylinder that is rated for 357 mag so it can more than handle that pressure. And I have shot it out of the gun and it handles it fine.

I assume you are asking which caliber to register it as? I don’t live in a state or country where that is a requirement so I can’t answer that. If you just have the 357/38 special cylinder then I’d say 357 mag. In fact that’s what I’d probably put down on it registration if I had to register it. They are all .357” caliber bullets they just go by different names…
