Tavola di violino - Tracciatura, taglio e scavo del canale del filetto

Per filettare la tavola si procederà allo stesso modo come per il fondo, ma con una particolare attenzione durante il taglio del canale a causa delle peculiarità del legno di abete, più morbido e disomogeneo rispetto all'acero del fondo. Durante la tracciatura con il filettatore bisognerà applicare una pressione molto più leggera e durante il taglio con il coltello sarà preferibile effettuare tanti brevi tagli consecutivi invece che far scorrere la lama per lunghi tratti, tagliando una per una le venature scure più dure e compatte e facendo attenzione a non affondare eccessivamente la lama nelle venature chiare, che essendo molto morbide non offrono praticamente alcuna resistenza al taglio. Sarà quindi necessario evitare il più possibile di applicare una pressione verso il basso, sostenendo il coltello e cercando di imprimere solo una spinta in avanti molto controllata, tenedo la lama leggermente inclinata per aumentare l'efficienza e la precisione del taglio. Durante lo svuotamento del canale con il bedano è raccomandabile togliere poco legno per volta per capire la direzione della fibra ed evitare strappi che andrebbero facilmente troppo in profondidà se la fibra non fosse dritta. For the purfling of the top plate we will proceed in the same way as for the back, but with particular attention when cutting the channel due to the peculiarities of the Spruce wood, softer and more inhomogeneous than the Maple of the back. When hollowing the channel with the small chisel it is recommended to remove little wood at a time to become aware of the direction of the fiber and to avoid tearing that would easily go too deep if the fiber is not straight. Yes, it is a small handmade chisel, called "bedano" in Italian. It is made from a 3 mm diameter spring steel wire, the sharpening angle is 38°, the width is 0.95 mm which taper to 0.8 on the back so that it is narrower than the channel that must cut and can move easily in tight curves without marring the channel walls

Is that a one sided knife blade? If double how do you keep it from flexing and shooting off the line.

The knife has a thin blade (0.5 mm thick) and double bevel, with full and slightly rounded faces to be able to follow curves in a fluid and smooth way. I tried with the single bevel, but its flat face is too straight and tends to stick into concave curves, deviating too easily from the track for my taste. But I suppose it is a matter of habit and development of the necessary technique, for example with the double bevel knife you have to take the perpendicularity with respect to the bevel and not the axis of the knife, and other similar details to understand and assimilate. The knife I use, even though they are apparently disposable blades, is actually modified by me (shortened to stiffen it) and sharpened with stones to get the surface of the bevels that work, if used right out of the box it is not equally good. I use the same blade for many violins, I skip to a new one only when it has become too short (sometimes the tip breaks even for me in tight curves...)

I also shorten it by grinding the back (not the cutting edge) to make it less flexible, and I do the same thing if the tip breaks to restore it.

No, è un coltello Stanley a lame intercambiabili, che sono più spesse di quelle di un bisturi. Inoltre ho modificato la lama in dotazione accorciandola da dietro di buoni 3 o 4 mm per renderla meno flessibile e rinforzare la punta, e l'ho riaffilata sulla pietra giapponese ad acqua grit 4000

Egregio Maestro volevo chiederle ,come si regola con la profondità del Canaletto del filetto ? visto che lei usa fare il canale del bordo prima di fare la filettatura, In poche parole quando le resta di filetto alla fine?, e quanto resta di legno sotto il filetto? P.S. ha poi provato le ricette di vernice ad olio che qualche anno fa le avevo mandato? Infine la ringrazio per questi momenti di bellezza che ci fa vivere

Il canale del filetto lo faccio profondo 1 mm e visto che ho già fatto il canale della sguscia mi rimane circa 1 mm scarso di filetto dentro nel canale. Visto che lo spessore minimo del canale della sguscia è circa 3 mm. sotto al filetto rimangono circa 2 mm di legno. Ho fatto qualche prova su dei campioni con le tue ricette, funzionano ma la resina coppale non mi convince perchè è troppo chiara e tende a schiarire troppo la vernice e a conferirgli un aspetto troppo vetroso rendendo troppo difficoltoso ottenere i colori che voglio. L'ambra è un'altra resina che non mi piace molto perchè mi sembra che tenda a fare troppo spessore.

In fondo basterebbe essere consapevoli che ogniuno, una volta acquisite le informazioni, si trova poi a fare i conti con le proprie capacità...Personalmente non riuscirei mai a fare uno strumento come riesce a Te...Nemmeno se mi impadronirsi della tua intera esperienza e di tutto ciò che sai. Le mani...la pazienza...il gusto e l'indole di ogniuno pongono poi quei limiti che, a ben considerare, sono il segno stesso della personalità dei singoli liutai.
