Many say that the province of Tawi Tawi is dangerous. It is said that the vicious terrorist group Abu Sayaff roams here. Due to decades of trouble in its neighboring provinces like Sulu and Basilan, Tawi Tawi is rarely advertised as a tourist destination, especially to foreigners.
But this is contrary to my brother's experience, when he went last week. You won't hear any gunshots or any sign of trouble. This is contrary to what we WATCH on TV and read in the newspapers.
I was not with my brother so let me share by telling the story and showing the videos he took while traveling to the island of Tawi Tawi.
According to my brother who works in the Department of Agriculture, since President Duterte has been in office, the province of tawi tawi has been called a safe place for tourists. This is due to the presence of the military in the area. so the island has security from side to side.
Most of the people who live here belong to the Sama tribe or the Badjao. many of them have moved to Malaysia, others to Indonesia. this is because of the past troubles that happened in the neighboring provinces. There are also Christians who live here. but only a little.
Life here is simple. In a market of Bongao just near the sea, this is where trade happens. most of the products are different types of fish, of course. One of the rare fish that you can only see in tawitawi, is the butanding and sea mantis that looks like a small lobster. There is also a caplobo or big clam or sea shell that can be made into kilando. The taklobo, which is not allowed to be caught in Davao and Samal island, because it is an endangered species, is abundant in Tawi tawi.
There are also many dry ones. there is dangit, squid, lapulapu and many others. Seaweeds are very abundant here. Tawi Tawi Any is the largest producer of seaweed in the Philippines. it is exported and also brought to various places in the Philippines such as Cebu and other provinces in the Visayas.
Their market is a bit chaotic. With so many people, you can imagine that the place is like a festival. The economy here is good. No one is very rich, no one is poor either. everyone is full, no one is hungry.
The island of TAwi-Tawi, an autonomous region of Mindanao, is a paradise, a virgin island, so to speak. I feel like coming here. I will eat their food. Mix with people and make friends, understand their culture, and speak their own language.
So Tawi Tawi, wait for me.
(NOTE: don't laugh at the food in Tawi-Tawi like you will hear in the video. Be polite be grateful that you've reached Tawi-Tawi, the last island in the Philippines.)
