This is the FIRST time I've ever heard an English person sing WITH an English accent. This is AWESOME! Curious as to why those from England typically sound American when they're singing.

No one sounds "American". If you really want to know why, here is the reason (simplified): The reason you don't hear accents in singing is because the main thing that differentiates accents is the construction of vowels. For instance, the way the letter "i" is pronounced in many British accents (there's more than one) sounds quite different than the same letter spoken by an American. Although most people are unaware they are doing it, speakers do not use a single vowel sound for most vowels is words, but rather construct a hybrid from sliding between multiple vowels (often what linguists call a dipthong). For instance, in Modern English, the vowel "i" is not its original sound (which derived form the Latin, which in modern English we now write as "ee", the long "E") but rather, in American English, the "i" sound is a dipthong created from the shortened "A" (ah) sound and the long "E". Say the two together quickly and you will hear the modern American English "i" as used in the word "right". In many dialects of British English, the corresponding dipthong became a different combination, a different "A" (aw) followed by the long "E". When you are singing, certain dipthongs are harder to produce than others while still projecting and holding notes. So a singer will naturally shift the dipthong straight to the second vowel of the dipthong pair (the long "E") or modify the leading vowel to the easier to create sound. Either way, the result is that, unless your accent (American accents included) is very strong and emphasizes the leading vowel in the dipthong pair over the trailing vowel, all accents blend into the same, single, "singing accent". So it is not that British singers sound American, it is that all singers use this hybrid accent. You as the listener don't notice because you have grown accustomed to it. But if you take a singer with just about any accent and remove the actual musical tones, essentially leaving them "speaking" in the singing accent, they will sound odd, as if they have an accent, even if they are Americans.

Jordan Holmes Agreed! So refreshing hearing a singer’s actual accent. My theory is that either American music is so influential so singers imitate, and also for wider commercial appeal. Artists like The Arctic Monkeys, YungBlud and Missy Higgins do their real accents well.
