FG should diversify investment, open seaport in the SS, construct road from Aba to Porthacourt, so that other state can compete, not only Lagos and Abuja. Or return the system to regional system of governance.
@Ismobell_MD5 сағат бұрын
Dear Mr Taiwo, One of the key issues raised by your committee regarding the urgent need for this reform is the pending cases brought by Rivers and Lagos States, where they are seeking to collect VAT independently. As you described, such an outcome would be precarious in terms of collection efficiency and equity. Your committee believes that proposing a formula with greater emphasis on derivation will dissuade these states from pursuing their cases. However, it is evident that these states would not have filed such suits if they did not anticipate significant benefits. From my understanding, their primary aim is to secure a larger share of VAT revenue under the current framework, given their status as the highest "contributors". Paradoxically, your committee’s proposed formula appears to make Lagos and Rivers the biggest losers-a point the chairman has repeatedly emphasized in various fora. This raises an important question: how can we reconcile this seeming contradiction? How will the committee convince Rivers and Lagos to withdraw their cases when your new proposal places them at a clear disadvantage? With due respect, something doesn’t quite add up here.
@Matt-z4q7 сағат бұрын
But if the case is pending at the Supreme Court, why not wait for them to rule on it first?

Anyway you cut it, the IGBO loses. Because any reasonable person would agree that Igbos contribute about 50 or more % to the vat. How and why ? IGBOs have the highest purchasing power of any ethnic group in Nigeria and all of Africa. But Nigerian national policies have made their homeland unattractive, forcing them to live and spend their money else where such that again, more than 50% of vat revenue given to Lagos for example, came from IGBOs. Again, because Nigeria has also, cleverly made the Census the only federal program in which the ubiquitous " state of origin" no longer applied, coupled with deliberate under counting, said IGBOs are far fewer than they actually are . It means that they lose on both derivation and on population. So, they continue to pay taxes that do not benefit their home land.
