This dude has been doing this for several years. It's only a matter of time before he gets someone killed. It's also dangerous to surfers exiting the barrel at full speed while blinded by the spit. You don't always exit the wave in complete control every time. Give us some space out there so we don't have to dodge boats while navigating one of the most dangerous waves in the world.

The captain of that boat is reckless. No reason to put his passengers in danger like that. They came very close to flipping and had that happened someone could have died. Your number one priority as a captain is the safety of those on board. This captain failed at that and fortunately no one was hurt. Hope this fellow learned a lesson.

@@powerboatguy2308 You even know the full story? The captain is a very well known captain, he even puts together the entire safety team of Tahiti. He is one of the most respected guys out there. His job for the last decade is getting sport photographers and sponsors as close to the wave as possible. After the first wave in his video, some one got caught with the wave. He didn;t had his safetyclip on, which you should and have been told to do so. He was trying to figgure out if they could get him. but it was too late. after that he matched the speed of the wave perfectly and put his boat in the right angle. That is why the boat didn't flip over. These photographers want to gget as close as possible and they come there for the danger. once in a while something can go wrong. Deal with it and go sit back on your sofa and let them do their jobs and surf.

Please, everyone read this account before passing judgement on the boat captain. “This is my version of what happened at Teahupoo Saturday 28th May,” writes Tim McKenna. ”We were on the orange Poti Marara fishing boat captained by Eric Labaste. “At Teahupoo the present situation is this. Camera boats with professional photographers, cameramen and pro surfers who have been shooting the wave for years are getting gradually pushed towards the wave by an ever-increasing number of taxi boats, jet skis, tourists and locals wanting to get close to the action for a selfie or story. “In addition at high tide some sets break closer to the channel compressing the zone even further. The first clip shows our boat getting caught a little too close to the first wave of a set with Joao Chumbo surfing on a wide set. Nothing dramatic, something Eric, myself and many other pros have experienced a hundred of times over the last 25-years. We know the risks of shooting around waves are fully prepared. “However after that wave one of the photographers on our boat stood up without securing himself. In a flash of a second, he slipped falling out of the boat, camera in hand. Eric looked back to see how we could pick him up. The couple of seconds spent assessing the situation how to rescue him put the boat in a critical situation as the second wave of the set started to break even closer to the channel. “Eric, instead of accelerating full throttle which would have launched the boat and thrown everyone overboard, stayed calm stabilising the boat ready to handle the face of the approaching 12ft wave but with an additional problem - a jet ski blocking his passage. “Once the boat was vertical the ice container came loose causing seasoned surf photographers and cameramen Chris Bryan, Ted Grambeau, Mendo De Dornellas, Natxo Gonzales, Aritz Aranburu and Jon Aspuru to be thrown into the water. Myself, veteran cameraman Olivier Ravel, Eric Bernatet and Andrew Fierro managed to stay on the boat. “Eric, fisherman by trade, is the most respected, experienced waterman at Teahupoo and the Fenua Aihere area. His positioning, understanding of the Teahupoo channel and the way the wave breaks is unparalleled. Most of the photos and footage that has been seen worldwide has been shot thanks to Eric’s expertise. He is Teahupoo’s version of Fred North and his helicopter, Brian Keaulana and his jet ski, etc. “Eric has now reached legendary status for his skill in handling successfully this extremely difficult situation. It is easy to criticise without knowledge of the conditions and actual sequence of events. The Ocean can be treacherous. Experience and keeping calm will always prevails over rash or hysterical behaviour.”

That's not a taxi boat. Those boats (they are at least 3 on the video) offer rides for tourists so they can take a picture from a surfers perspective. The orange boat has the prime spot other two had to settle for a secondary location. That should never be ‘business as usual’. Apparently he flirts with disaster regularly. With a charter. It’s one thing of you’re solo. Being responsible for a full charter is another thing entirely. The slow mo at the end 01:21 seals the deal. Captain is reckless and lost control of his vessel and endangered the passengers in his charge. The two passengers on the back of the boat bailed prior to the boat going almost vertical. They could see the danger before the captain and did not trust his judgment. Abandon ship! ?: "@Sullivan Fachner : a journalist was in that boat and wrote a piece on it for msws Instagram. Apparently there was a jet ski blocking him from gunning it and a guy had almost fallen off on the first wave" Possibly. Point taken.

If you look at wave you can see where the jetsky was waiting making s turns for him to move up but the pilot just stayed and jet sky said f it im going or I put you in danger.. if jetsky stayed he would flip and possibly be on the boat knowing wave pushing to the right toward the boat.. jetsky guy had make move when he did.. and that slo mo dose no help because ten seconds before you can clearly see jetsky waiting for the boat...

I'm in complete disbelief of the level of unawareness of Mr. Captain KOOK . Whoever is trying to spread false information about how he was put in that position is completely and absoultely blind! Knowing the day's conditions, those were 2 inside double up waves, which can even be more dangerous than set waves; usually unrideable, closing out. If this KOOK has been doing this for years, as stated by many surfers and crew alike; you can also look at a couple more videos from years back and see for yourself.. Anyways, this guy was absolutely in the worst spot by choice, having had the chance TGTFO after he was awfully close to that first wave [camera boat is awfully close, too] and the KOOK makes it!! then you can see his true intentions when he didnt even care to assess passenger situation before 2nd wave hits. He then gave a tiny fuck about his F sandwich flying out. Then even after that, he had no intention of picking anyone up from the water 🙄 and the people falling out also preferred the jetskies over the AH that just nearly killed them. The only dude semi stoked was the guy who was able to duckdive successfully on that massive wall. Hate aside, the famous red jet ski gets out the way with visibly enough time for this guy to be able to make it. Jet ski was probably getting ready to rescue some peeps if he knows CapnKook. Also, there was one guy who was apparently taken by the waves lip into the closeout explosion, did anyone else catch that?
@IkaikaArnado
@IkaikaArnado 2 жыл бұрын
Well to be fair he was on the razor edge of going over the falls. The best thing for him to do is blast out of there. It's better for the jet ski guys to grab the guys that fell over. Of course, he shouldn't park a boat in the impact zone either. That's extremely dangerous for everyone there.

I’ve been dismissed as a crank when I’ve expressed my disbelief about these chaotic boats in the Channel at Teahpoo. They’re going to have to define a safe area. Cameras can zoom in and rubber necks don’t need to be that close.

From a photography point of view, that's not correct. A zoom in isn't the same photo. The closer you get, the wider the angle of the lens you can use. Due to how perspective works, you don't get the same photo when zooming in. It will be much less impressive, as longer lenses compress everything ...

It won't belong before one of those boats gets caught inside of a sneaker set. This is when the second wave is running really close to the first wave but the sneaky wave is way bigger and this wave catches all the boats on the inside. I hope all the passengers have their life vest on.

@@bennieknape4857 yeah that’s right, I am biased, hence the “nitro circus” addition. Surfing was better without the engines. Without the skis a lot of lives would be lost, but thats the risk and a choice. People water ski into bombs with feet strapped onto boards then get plucked out of the soup if they fail. It is fascinating, and it scares the shit out of me. But I feel it’s far different from true surfing, quite a bit less pure, and without the additional consequence. I see videos of Kirra, with people skipping the paddle out using jet skis and it seems selfish and unnecessary to me. So I get triggered by all this petro-embrace. I get grumpy on the whole “saving lives” argument, it’s a surfer’s choice to be out there or humbly pass.
