I drove a fleet cab on the west side of Manhattan, in the seventies. It was exactly like the TV show taxi. In my garage we had a dispatcher who was just like Louie, they all acted like mean tyrants in their elevated cages. If you had a regular cab, you would have to wait until the guy on the day shift came back, if you didn't drive regular, you had to wait until a free cab came in, so it was first come first serve. Consequently you always had a lot of drivers hanging around waiting for a cab, and that was where the fun was. Sometimes the waiting time was two hours. There were so many characters, actor wanna bees, starving artists, musicians, students, has beens, immigrants and career drivers like Alex. Lots of stories and shenanigans. Some of the wildest times were with my fares, you met a lot of interesting people looking for a wild time, so sometimes you would join your fare on their escapades. I didn't have a TV, and didn't watch Taxi until it was in reruns, but I was amazed at how accurately it captured those days.

I hacked in Orlando in the early '90s, and I agree with you on all counts. The only thing Taxi was missing was 30-40% of the drivers being 300lb behemoths that ruined the driver seat in every cab they ever drove. But, you're absolutely right on the garage being the center of the universe. I would always get there early and get signed in to get a better cab. It makes a difference in the tips having a nicer ride.

@Mac-sb5lj6 ай бұрын
Me too!! 🙏 💔
@zuperdee24 күн бұрын
@@dr1204Judd probably didn’t want to mention Jeff because Jeff was NOT exactly let go under the best of circumstances. Jeff had serious drug problems, and there was a day when he was too high to perform, so they divided his lines for that episode among Danny and Christopher, who delivered them as well, if not better than Jeff could have, and that made the producers finally realize that Jeff was in fact expendable, so they fired him. As for Andy, he was still loved, which is probably why he stayed, even though Andy himself was not happy with the loss of creative control over his Foreign Man character that he originally created. The lesson here is: NOBODY is irreplaceable in show business, not even the most talented actor in the world who seems singularly qualified for a unique character, as Valerie Harper’s dismissal from the sitcom “Valerie,” later “The Hogan Family” proved. Furthermore, Jeff’s character was NOT even all that unique compared to Louie or Jim or even Elaine or Alex. Jeff himself even remarked once that his character was kind of generic compared to them, and that he was tired of being the butt of all the common and stereotypical struggling actor jokes.
