The Erta’Ale volcano rises in the heart of this future sea. Beyond the scientific mission, it is a human adventure. While the volcano molded the landscape, geography shaped a people. The heat is concentrated in the collapse basin, and the living conditions in this environment are among the most hostile in the world. The Afars have developed a subsistence economy: they trade in salt deposited by the ocean opening. For these people, the volcano is forbidden and the crater is the devil's antechamber.
