I lived in the middle of nowhere but would gather with my closest neighbors with kids down the road and we would have rock fights too. My grandpa told me it was a SUPER popular thing to do everywhere when he was a kid. He had a friend who lost an eye doing that. I came back and told my friends and we never did a rock fight again but I know we got into some other reckless shit for sure. Nothing violent but still pretty reckless and a few times we could have died.
