FYI for those who don’t know: Ravelry has a built-in currency converter. In the top right corner of the pattern page is a box with the price shown in the original currency and the price in your chosen currency (and you can choose whether to buy it now, add to cart or send as a gift)

As someone who crochets and knits, I’ve always found it interesting that crochet hats commonly start at the crown while knit hats commonly start at the brim. Of course the Musselburgh Hat is an extremely popular exception!

I wish you could have seen how *rapidly* I jumped into this video and breathed a sigh of relief, this is exactly what I was looking for! I was previously in the process of searching for a way to make a hat for son, buuuuuuuut this tubular cast on, plus the ack of proper circular needles, *plus* the metal DPNs that I have were kicking my butt attempting to do this from the brim, up. I was floored hearing about this concept since I’m still fairly new to knitting. I would love to join the KAL, as well, it’ll be my first one. I had a couple of hiccups, so this is for future knitters, as well as a note to myself if I run into this issue…..freaking pay attention to the pattern. That is all lol I tell my kids this all the time, but I also tell them I make mistakes too. So after another attempt at a new concept, getting used to the tools I have, ore attentiveness, and a swapping of the yarn I was using (traded my DK for worsted, it made it so much easier) I am finally ready to tackle this project! I am so happy to complete it!

Oh I’m so glad! And I have to tell you, if you like the look of a tubular cast on (who doesn’t? It’s just the process that sucks! 😂) you can achieve the same look when you knit from the crown down by doing an Italian or tubular bind off and in my opinion it’s WAY more pleasant and far less complicated. ❤️

The Alaska and Aska hats remind me of Tori Yu's Manhattan Hat (which is worked from the brim to the crown). It has a very similar crown shape and overall feel. Love having the option to go either direction and still get that great looking end product.

What I've found I like to do is to start out at the top, work the hat to the normal length, then continue with the stitches already on the needle, and work in reverse - as if I'm doing another hat from the bottom up. Then fold one into the other for a double thick hat. It also has the advantage of concealing loose ends/floats. Also, if you want, you can reverse the color schemes, or change the colors altogether for a reversible hat. Think of the possibilities...

Just wanted to add that the hat with the special construction that you showed, the Aska hat, calls for a Judy's magic cast-on, which is my go-to for toe-up socks. So I think for this hat you would cast on a few stitches, (by looking at the crown I would say maybe 20 or 24) and then increases at each end, probably every round to create a round shape. You would have to leave enough stitches between your increases to create the top band (as oppose to a sock, where you leave only 2 stitches on each sides). I don't know if that is clear or correct, but I would definitely try that.
