Wow, Tayler. What an endorsement for swatching you have made! You have given me quite a bit to chew on. I have some brown mohair on hand which I bought for a hat kal and have lots left. I have been using it doubled for the heads on my mother bears 🐻 but now I want to try holding it with another yarn for the body. It will be a grand experiment. Cheers!

Thank you Suzanne! Yes. This has definitely opened my eyes to swatching when pairing with mohair. I mean. I'm not a BIG fan of swatching generally (shame on me), but in this case, it seems ESSENTIAL.
@tulpenballerina Жыл бұрын
That is so interesting. for me the essence of your video is: To exentuate a specific colour family of a veriegated yarn just use a complementary colour to mute the colours of the same colour family down in the base yarn. THe more similar the mohair is to the colours in the base yarn the more the mohair tones these same colours down and enhances the comlementary colours. So interesting! It´s one of those things you only learn by trying because I wouldn´t be able to imagine this. Thank you, Tayler, for these insights!💐

Thank you so much for this video! I am new to using mohair, so this is exactly what I needed because I've been agonizing over mohair colors for the last few days trying to figure out what color combination I need to use to tone down a variegated yarn I purchased that looks completely different than I thought after I wound it up. This information should help me make a good decision. 🤞If I could give your video two thumbs up, I would! I love your energy too!!! 😃

Thank you for another wonderful video. This one is so useful, helping to make one's Creativity practical. I had bought a lovely peachy mohair and needed a fingering weight to anchor it. The assistant at my LYS (a former museum curator specializing in fiber arts) handed me a yarn of variegated reds. Having explained I wanted something that looked like fire, like flames, I thought she was nuts. I bought it anyway. Having now seen your explanation, I am excited to see them together, and just need a two-skein project for them to dance around me, as I am a phoenix in need of renewal.

Wow, I love this video. It was so helpful in thinking about the pairing of variegated fingering weight and mohair. I recently made a sweater out of fingering weight minis in stripes, combined with a solid mohair carry along lace weight in a very soft pewter gray. I loved the way the sweater turned out, because I did want to tone down and blend some of the variegated minis. The cardigan turned out fluffy and wonderful, but your samples were striking in seeing that a variegated mohair, combined with a mohair solid or tonal, could often be much more effective. And I didn't realize variegated mohair yarns were available. I am glad you have them available. Very interesting!

Thank you Chelle! I'm so glad that this provided some insight. It is a really interesting thing that happens when you play around with mohair pairings in a variety of tonal/variegated combinations. Your sweater sounds beautiful and I can imagine how lovely and blended the colors turned out. ❤️

Hello from Tennessee! I'm so grateful to have found this video you created!!! Years ago my sister gave me some vintage mohair that was in someone's stash that had passed away. My sister is a quilter and I'm all the yarn things. 😁. This mohair is baby pink and also there's baby blue. I took it to several yarn shops and they helped me pick out colors. I never loved the combos so its stayed safely stored away. I thought about dying it, but now I can see that putting it with a bright multicolored yarn will be great. Thank you so so much!

Hi Taylor. I loved this video and all your swatches. I would love to see a swatch with the base and mohair both in a highly variegated colorway. Say you took the sapphire out of your sweater and changed the base to the same as your mohair. If the reds and blues didn't match up would they each get muffled and make purple instead of keeping the original beautiful colorway? Love your insight
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS4 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent question. I am actually doing some swatching right now with this in mind. I'm using a lighter colorway than Angel Rust, but one that has a lot of variegation and speckling. I'm hoping to show the range of color and texture when you pair the variegated mohair with a pale solid base yarn, a pale, solid mohair with the variegated base yarn, the pale mohair with the pale solid base yarn, and the variegated mohair with the variegated base yarn, plus a swatch of each on their own. I think this will be an interesting experiment in exactly what happens in each of these instances. My prediction, and one based on my own experience using same mohair/base yarn colorways, is that the colors in the yarns obviously won't match up, but because they are variegated in the same way with the same color palette, it will create a fabric that is just more heavily variegated than each individually. Think: a more heavy-handed dye job. Let's see what happens! I'll post my results on Instagram, but I may also do a follow-up video with them as well.

Hey Taylor! Wondering what your recommendation would be for a mohair pairing with a dusty mauve base yarn? I’m looking to make the champagne cardigan and wanting something that isn’t pink or purple, and might even give a marled effect. Should I be more concerned with the colour of the strand inside the mohair? Or will the fuzz of the mohair also contribute towards the marle effect
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS Жыл бұрын
If you’re looking to neutralize the pinkness in the mauve, I would go with something gold, olive, or even in the blue family. You also can’t go wrong with a nice earthy gray overall vibe to tone things down. The core strand of the mohair will be what gives the overall fabric the marled look, but the halo will give the overall tone. I hope this helps! ❤️

Now, what if you picked a variegated base yarn with a variegated mohair of different but *similar* colorways? I've found a base yarn I love but the pattern requires mohair paired with it. Unfortunately the mohair doesnt come in the same color way but there are 2 similar mohair colorways that are also variegated, one slightly lighter and one slightly darker... would that work similarly to pairing with the same colorways? I cant swatch but using your experience to.make an educated guess, would that be similar?
@WOOLNEEDLESHANDS3 жыл бұрын
Sooo this is an excellent question and here is my answer: if similar colors are present in the Mohair, than you’re going to achieve a result somewhat similar to that you would achieve with like colorways, however you may notice a toning down of certain more dominant colors in the base yarn because of the difference in the distribution of colors between the two skeins. It may pair quite well, but I would expect a somewhat new look compared to each individual colorway. You have new wanting to explore this further. I’ve been intending to revisit this concept in a new video and I think that may need to happen sooner rather than later. Thank you for watching!
