hey! love your content, but could you please do an elena rybakina forehand analysis! this would be highly appreciated, as her forehand is one of the most damaging shots on the WTA at the moment. thank you!

Taylor Fritz using almost a Hawaiian forehand grip was NOT the video I was expecting, hahaha

I know right? Insane. I can’t use that grip and hit anything other than a crappy shot.

@@2MinuteTennis I think Western is quite sufficient. Also, your wrist will probably thank you.

something to note is that fritz holds the racket with a closed fist rather than having his index finger out (trigger finger). This messes with the index knuckle as a guide for referencing grips. If you hold a racket with a conventional grip with your fingers separated and your index trigger finger out, and then you slide into a fist grip with your fingers all together, you will notice that your index knuckle slides down the bevels (so a semi-wester will now look full western), but you will also notice that it doesn't change the orientation of the face of the racket relative to your wrist. so a "western grip" with a closed fist actually squares up at the same height above the ground as a "semi-western" conventional grip. *edit* so to clarify, though his grip is past western if we use the index knuckle as a guide to define it, the actual orientation of the racket face is the same as a conventional western grip.

Great point. I think also when one goes to a closed fist type grip structure, in addition to the index knuckle shifting more western so to speak, the heel pad shifts a bit more eastern, which as you point out, changes the ultimate palm position at contact. For all this reason, I would say Taylor, like Jack Sock, is in a regular western grip, not a Hawaiian grip.

Is the grip part of the stroke where it works together with the elbow in, or are they independent factors?

Thanks Ryan. Great explanation. If we go full extreme grip or full western for that matter, does handling low balls gets tough ?

It's supposed to, but I have a full western and my best shots tend to be on lower/mid height balls while I struggle with heigher balls even though most say the opposite. When I watch Fritz practice he doesn't seem to have any problems with the lower balls and seems to be very comfortable with them like me.

If you switch to a more western grip it probably is harder, but I don't think it's hard for people who have always played with that grip.

I totaly disagree with the Hawaian or even Western GRIP. Its a strong semi Western imo. If its a Western or Hawaii GRIP at contact Point the Back of His Hand would be Pointing at the net. Its Not the Case isnt IT?🎉

@@ManagerMia 26 years of coaching has taught me to not believe what people say about grips they use. You saw where his knuckle is placed. His knuckle was not on 5. If he used a western grip his knuckle would be on 5. I think all that tells us is that he isn’t correct about the FH grip he uses.
