In this case, she was criticized for dancing awkwardly at awards shows when most of the other attendees were sitting on their booties trying to act cool. So she decided that she’d feature her most awkward dance moves, set against many top-notch dance performances. But even in this video, you can see that she really *does* have moves. She’s a music theater kid at heart and loves to play different roles.

Taylor said she got the idea for doing a video with all of her “awkward” dancing because she was constantly being criticized for how she dances at awards shows, while most of the other attendees are sitting still, stone faced. She decided that since she’s at these events with so many talented artists performing live, that she’ll enjoy herself and dance no matter what anybody else says about her. I love that she has fun and doesn’t GAF, and on top of it, she can poke fun at herself (and end up with a massive hit pop record to boot!)

@@orphanedhanyou Naaa. She knows performers see it as supportive when the audience is standing, singing, and dancing, so she stands, sings, and dances to support other artists. She’s also never the only one - there are always nominees and attendees dancing in other parts of the audience, generally along the sides and back of whatever theatre they’re in. It’s just that the people in the middle tend to be nominees for high profile awards, and they’re the most afraid that any slip of emotion will be used against them in the media. They’re thinking about their reputation, and Taylor’s already been there, done that. Also worth remembering: These show organizers always put Taylor in an isolated camera spot for a reason. At the Grammys, they could have moved her one table over and she would have been next to an entire section that was dancing and grooving to the music the entire night - but then there wouldn’t have been any angles to suggest she was the only one dancing and they couldn’t feed this narrative you espoused. Might be worth thinking about.

I’ll never forget listening to this song the day it dropped. My daughter came home from middle school after having a run-in with some mean girls and after a good cry I played her this video. By the end of the video her tears had dried up, her inner badass had been reclaimed and my momma heart didn’t feel so helpless. This song is so much more than a catchy bop-it packs a solid punch!

When she sent this idea to one of her friends in a voice note he wrote back, “Oh my god, it’s so annoying! I LOVE IT!” The kids dancing with her at the end were fans of hers who had written to her about being bullied. Pretty awesome video about being yourself and not letting the opinions of others to bring you down. 👏🏻👏🏻 close, but wrong song. That quote was in the talk she gave to the producers in the 2015 Grammy Pro video; it was in regard to the mouthed pen click in Blank Space. Max Martin was the guy who said it. Which, I'd love to have Knox watch that video, but it is 40 minutes even without the 4 live solo songs at the end. Those people dancing in regular clothes at the end were all fans, invited to be in the video, though they didnt know that was what was happening until after they arrived. Not one of them leaked anything about it before the video aired. Fans who attended the secret sessions before album releases kept everything secret too, every time. Swifites are a whole different level of fanbase.

This song inspired a 12 yr old with cerebral palsy (his parents were told he'd never walk or talk) w/ a crush to dance. His community rallied around him and he was able to meet her at the Rep tour. Last year (on his device) he gave the V speech (w/ a nod to her) at his graduation. Sadly, critics wrote how negative this song & video was on society- a student even did a thesis.

Ten years ago this was the song Taylor caught my attention with. Before this I thought she was just some over-hyped pop singer and would vanish again and be forgotten in a few years. But this was the first time I understood what a great songwriter she is. All the different layers of meaning in this song, playing cleverly with the listeners expectations. And done with a super-catchy tune and a video that is entertaining, but also perfectly underlining the meaning of the song. This is pure genius. I listened to 1998 after this and I was sold. Years later Folklore/Evermore turned me into a hardcore swiftie. Knox, do a reaction to her Delicate video next, if you haven’t done already. Delicate is the logical conclusion to Shake It Off.

Also, she went into the writing of the song in a 40 minute discussion of the production of the 1989 album; how it developed and some different ways songs were created with different people.

One of my favorite parody artists, The Hillywood Show, did a version of this song based on the tv show Supernatural, and I never noticed how true to this music video that parody is. If you like the show, they even got a LOT of the main actors from it to do a cameo. I also LOVE The Rock's lip sync of this on Lip Sync Battle on Spike. You have to see it, he gets SO into it.

The video also has another layer to it. Back in the day people and the media would always make fun of her for her “bad” dancing. She always dances at music award shows and that and would get soooo much hate about it. She even said in one interview “yeah I might not be the best dancer but I’m still having more fun than you” something along those lines.

fyi at the end when all the people were just dancing crazy, those were all fans she found online and invited to come do the video. They taped it like 3 months before it came out and they all kept it a secret until the video came out!
