I live in India, as a teenager we didn't have access to buying original records here, i also didn't have internet. I remember listening to her songs after downloading them from an internet café. And i became a huge fan without ever watching a single music video. Hearing their songs in the late-00s and early-10s, it didn't even register to kid me that Taylor and Avril had debuted years apart. Looking it up, Taylor was 12 or 13 when Complicated came out in 2002, so I guess it makes sense this song would be nostalgic for her.
