What’s really unfortunate about the bad rap Swifties have gotten online, is that it’s pretty new behavior in the grand scheme of Taylor’s fame. Up until very recently, it was very uncool to be a Taylor Swift fan. She’s been regularly insulted by the general public & media for going on two decades now. Her dating life, her perceived art credibility, her vocal & songwriting abilities, etc. And if you liked her, your taste was immediately trash to the people who get to decide what good music is. So long time fans got into a habit of being defensive. However! In the past 2-3 years, as Taylor’s fame has continued to grow exponentially, more and more new fans have joined the party. And some of those fans are loud, & mean, & lack empathy for the people they’re claiming to “protect” Taylor from. It’s incredibly frustrating to those of us who have been here for a long time. I try to remind myself 1) that many of them are probably young teens & 2) not to be ashamed of liking Taylor on their behalf, because I’ve been a fan for a long time and have never once considered leaving hate comments on a reactor’s YT video for “misinterpreting” a song that was already up for interpretation. The rest of us should do better job of policing anybody who acts like that on social media. It’s just so strange to see such a lack of empathy from fans of an artist renowned for hers. I’m very sorry you had such a poor experience and I hope it doesn’t turn you away from exploring more of Taylor’s music

100% agree...i think some of the younger/newer swifties grew up on Twitter and think fighting online is somehow important and something other than a waste of energy. Older swifties might correct misconceptions or call out blatant misoginyst takes but if you just don't like it that's cool. Not everyone likes the same thing.

I agree! I always seem to be reading comments about Taylor in her fandom posts, which are so rude to Taylor and to anyone who loves her work. I just don’t get it. If a person relates better to another artist, why doesn’t that person just enjoy that singer? Why do they post on Taylor’s fandom to be haters? Art is subjective. I loved Leonardo DiCaprio’s work in Titanic. My BFF refused to see it because she did not like him. So? Was she wrong? No! It was her preference! My friend did not take to social media to proclaim how much she did not like him and to throw shade at his fans. It is art, not mathematics. I do try to show ❤ and offer reason and logic, but it will not change haters.

One thing to know about this album that is fact. There is a love trilogy that links Cardigan, August and Betty. Betty and James were an item. James had a summer fling with…. Augusta ?? (“August”), then James came back to Betty (“Betty”). “Cardigan” is Betty’s perspective after it all went down.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned this at some point, but the additional genius behind Great American Dynasty is that Taylor LITERALLY bought the house she sings about in the song. So it's not just that her life is so similar in terms of the "ish" that Rebecca Harkness went through from judgmental people, when she sings the line about "and then it was bought by me" she meant it. Plus I just love the mental image of some pompous man's pooch getting a dye job.

I cannot tell you how much I loathe when people say “you’re wrong, the song is about this”. Sure, it’s fun to speculate and see connections through the songs but the fact of the matter is we’ll never know exactly what the songs are about unless she explicitly tells us. And songs are supposed to resonate differently with different people. She also is a big fan of double entendres. Many songs are literally supposed to be taken two ways and fans are calling out reactors saying they’re wrong because they took it in one direction and the fan thinks it goes in the other direction. 😅 It’s insane

It's not always stretched out by fans. Sometimes she just does it in a way that's kinda specific for the fans. She's actually addressed this. Like the song cardigan. Anyone who is not in the circle can perceive that it's about Matty, but we know it's not. The double entendre is supposed to be the thing it's truly about and the way the song reflects you or how you can resonate with it.

It seems like we have pretty similar taste in music so I think it could be right up your street. It was Carolina and Safe and Sound that made me say "holy fuck" when first diving into her discography. Edit: Also, I'd be really interested to see how you react to Wildest Dreams. It's a single and somewhat glittery but I think it's actually a really beautiful song. The performance at the Grammy Museum with just her and her electric guitar is gorgeous.

I am so sorry that you’re feeling some kinda way about the feedback you received. Fans, and we Swifties are no exception, are passionate and it may come across kinda strong. I’ve read comments from some fellow Swifties to you and I wholeheartedly agree that Taylor’s work has many different ways to interpret. I feel that the most powerful message that she brings out in her work, is that it relates to everyone on different levels. The only comment that I see over and over, related to Our Girl’s Reactors’ is an urging for you all to become familiar with Taylor. For example: “Dear John” hits different (😏) once a person learns about Taylor’s experience with John Mayer. “My tears ricochet” is another example, as once a person learns about Taylor’s stolen melodies by Scott and Scooter, it is so poignant. So, don’t worry much. We always appreciate watching reactions! Especially watching the birth of new Swifties, once people get to know who Taylor is, and not from listening to haters.

@@markabusireactions I am relieved! I am a “baby swiftie” with only about a year and a half since I discovered Taylor’s work with the exception of the pop stuff. I have taken to watching reactions and following reactors who I feel, offer opinions based on their personal interpretations and also by getting to know Taylor. The reactors are all deliciously different. My girls from “Chats and Reacts” always get big laughs from me, watching their interactions with each other, and how they slap each other. So funny! And yet, they also get tears from me when they describe a point in Taylor’s history, which resonates with specific songs. When they cry, I too cry. They are wonderful! Some reactors, like My boy Zack the Swiftologist, brings his critically experienced eye, as he has been with taylor since her debut album. He is not critical, but he is not afraid to say what he thinks. In my humble opinion, Zack must be one of the most insightful reactors to Taylor! He is adorable and spicy. He truly loves Taylor too. But it cannot be a picnic for him to be such a loyal fan. Not only have people been very mean to him, but he has actually gotten freaking death threats from psychotics who mascarade as Swifties!!!!But Zack is as tough as he is witty and thankfully, hasn’t given up on us. Just hang in there. Like with my buddy @ G.O.T., I have adored watching him turn into a dedicated Swiftie. I am now loving to watch you grow with Taylor as I continue to do so. We are with you. So the line from TTPD:The Anthology you are connecting to the bridge line from Cardigan is, I think I'm right, is from The Black Dog " 6 weeks of breathing clean air, I still miss the smoke"... Or are you talking about the line from track 2, "you smoked then ate seven bars of chocolates"? 😂 I would argue that Swift's songs rarely operate on the level of only being about one thing. Especially Folklore and Evermore. Cardigan, August and Betty are supposed to be first and foremost a fictional love triangle. But I definitely think the references you are making to imagery from TTPD + The Anthology are strong. How much fun is it to be able to see a musician... Let alone a pop musician... Carrying imagery and metaphors across albums ranging over years apart? There is also imagery and metaphors that she's been carrying through albums since her earliest albums. That's dedication to songwriting that is just so satisfying and exciting to me 😊

Playing 😈 advocate, not every critical remark is mean. We do not all have to be saying, “wonderful”. I heard two reactors who were so upset with Scott Swift when they heard, “But Daddy I love him” and many pointed out other interpretations. Some got defensive about that. We learn from critical thinking too. But I do agree about being mean-spirited. Unfortunately, with the present climate in The US, with a presidential candidate, who instead of debating points of view on issues, has been a model example of the worst behavior, calling people names and mocking them personally, has led to weak minded people embracing this sad behavior. The kind of behavior which earned us a “time out” in kindergarten, is being celebrated. Especially when they have no intelligent remarks. Aye aye aye. 😢

My interpretation of mirrorball as a self-diagnosed one herself, is that in simple terms it's about 'people pleasers'. The narrator of the song is desperate to impress and satisfy others so she becomes this thing that no one can take their eyes off - a shiny mirrorball in the center of the room - by almost taking pieces of others to "reflect" back at them. So it's like she has different personalities or facets for every person she meets; "I'll show you every version of yourself tonight". It works because by molding herself in these ways, it keeps people interested because who doesn't like to hangout with others who are similar to them. The problem is that eventually she's taken so many different parts of others to add to herself that she loses who she actually is underneath that and all she is now is a mirror and a performer at all times. Which is why she's still spinning even in the dark or why even when the "circus" is sent home she's still there performing without anyone to perform to. The only way for her to find her true self is to let herself fall and shatter and redefine her shape. Now this is a little different to Taylor's own interpretation which she gave though, where said: "And I think with ‘mirrorball’, sometimes when I’m writing to an instrumental track, I’ll push play and I’ll immediatly see a scene set. This was one of the cases where I just saw lonely disco ball, twinkly lights, neon signs, people drinking beer by the bar, a couple of stragglers on the dance floor, just sort of a sad, moonlit, lonely experience in the middle of a town that you’ve never been in. And I just was thinking “Ok, we have mirrorballs in the middle of a dance floor because they reflect light, they are broken a million times and that’s what makes them so shiny, we have people like that in society too, they hang there and, every time they break, it entertains us. And when you shine a light on them, is this glittery, fantastic thing but then, a lot of the times when the spotlight isn’t on them, they’re still there, up on a pedestal, but nobody’s watching them.”

I never put the 2 together but it’s incredible. Also, your reaction to How Did It End…..chills. Best reaction I’ve seen. Lastly, want to tell you im so sorry that anyone made you feel bad for your opinion. Some self proclaimed swifties don’t really get that their judgement and overall assholery is exactly everything that Taylor is against. They do not speak for the fandom. In answer to your question... I believe Mirroball is a metaphor for her relationship with the fans, at times beautiful but also delicate and fragile. She is the mirroball, reflecting the fans emotions back with her song writing. "I want you to know, I'm a mirroball, I'll show you every version of yourself tonight..." The metaphor extends to a circus theme where she compares herself to a trapeze artist/tightrope walker who is "not a natural" but always trying her best to keep the fans happy and entertained.

I think what originally would have annoyed me about your fiest Exile discussion is touched on in her discussion with Aaron and Jack on Long Pond about the background of the entire collaboration. I don't disagree at all that it was an incredibly smart move on Swift's part to collab with a name as big as Bon Iver when she was trying to get into the indie realm... But on top of that, I doubt whether she would have done it with them specifically if she hadn't had been such a serious fan of their music on a personal level. This is a woman who does not need to beg any big name to work with her. She frikking got Kendrick Lemar to collab with her. She got Future to collab with her on her hip hop inspired Reputation album. Neither of those men needed that collab in their careers at that time. And she was so clearly giddy that Vernon did want to collab with her, like she wasn't the biggest mega star on the planet, on that interview at Long Pond, and I didn't find that excitement calculated or fey. It's endearing and I had only really been into Swift's music for a year when Excile came out and had known Bon Iver fairly well since For Emma, Forever Ago. It was what felt like a negation of her personal enthusiasm and that she'd personally been listening to them for years that was frustrating to hear. She wasn't ever just ticking a box with Bob Iver. I think it was a dream she'd had for years.

When it comes to Swifties, Armys, and Beyhives, the fandom just gets so much shit from people who never actually dive into the entirety of 1 album and usually are just take their radio hits and pissing on the artist for being overrated, talking about exes or just not worth a listen but often the undertones are just plain sexists, racists and xenophobic. So a portion of the fans gets defensive really quickly and have just made it a bad habit. But still, media outlets will blow the toxicity out of portion because it makes more clickbait news. All this to say, as someone who does not subscribe to that toxicity, I can understand the history for these fandoms and many others like it. That does NOT and will NEVER excuse fans from threaten and attacking new listeners who don't understand that and haven't delved into the discography of their artists. The fandoms really need to put the toxic parts of the fandom in place or drown them out because it is tiring.

I'm honestly not sure if Bon Iver is using a pedal or if that's his falsetto in harmony, but theres a ton of post production processing anyhow to clean it up, fix timing and add a ton of reverb, and extra harmonies just as there would be on any record. From the little i know of him, i think his falsetto sounds like that when he performs skinny love live, but i may be wrong. Especially since they were recorded separately during covid. I will say hide and seek is done with a vocoder which i don't think he is using. It's fun to watch her play live... she has a lot of fascinating tech including gloves that act as a live synths. Also i think the credibility thing was more about aaron desner than bon iver. She has a pretty long history of reaching out to whomever she admires and can help her get the sound she wants.

🤦‍♀️ Ps. Sorry fürs schreiben in Deutsch, kann wunderbar englisch verstehen, bin aber schlecht im englisch schreiben. Grüße aus Deutschland 😅

Honestly the mean swifties are not true swifties. Taylor has always been about being nice to people. Lyrics can have double, triple meaning and there is no such thing as right or wrong. You can tell a story of what she felt when she wrote it but we can all take away what we want from a song. The real swifties will support you no matter what as long as you are not mean 👏🏻 Love your insight to her music

I barely listen to the studio version of Mirrorball any more. Probably because it is just easy and chilled. The acoustic for me is just gorgeously gentle and quite anxiety filled on the bridge. The driving rhythm of it also really pulls me in every time. If it wasn't for the acoustic version, I'd probably skip the track most of the time

Hi I’m back after two days off from watching ALL your TS reactions As far as what the songs are about, Taylor has said on multiple occasions that once they go into the world, they belong to us anyway. We can apply them to our lives If a song IS about her personal life, she’s not going to spill. So it isn’t fact even when we “know” (All Too Well😂😭). Songs that are fictional she sometimes gives the details on so I guess there’s some semblance of “fact” there but again, it’s for you to make it about what you relate to. No one needs to be getting arrogant and territorial about it I’m only on Cardigan and I’ve written a novel 🤦‍♀️ I’ll get out of your hair now 😊

Yeah, so if I don't put Folklore on shuffle, the 1 is often a skip for me (I listen to the playlist on Spotify that has the studio version and the Long Pond Studio Session versions on the same list). I enjoy the song... But I'm usually just too excited to get to better songs on the album if I play the list unshuffled. I never connected the 1 as being similar to The Civil Wars... But now I kinda see that similar vibe in the Long Pond sessions recording. It also gives me a bit of the feel of that band that had at least one song on the Juno soundtrack. Can't for the life of me remember who they are right now

Cardigan, August, and Betty are the teenage love triangle, that is a fact, Most of the songs on folklore and evermore are supposedly fictional, with some personal. Cardigan is the POV of Betty, August is the POV of the other woman, and Betty is the POV of James, those are facts.

always love your videos and commentary about T Swift, and especially how you’ve come around as a legit Swiftie. But I must correct one thing regarding your thoughts on The Last Great American Dynasty. Let’s not call Donald Trump “old money”. I believe it goes only one generation back with his father being the son of German immigrants. The Kennedy family is old money. The truest old money goes way back to families coming to America on the original Mayflower ship. Sorry I just can’t let it stand where Trump gets credit for anything!

I am wondering if you haven't watched the Long Pond Studio Sessions then? She says all over the interviews on the Long Pond Studio Sessions Special that the songs are inspired by her own life. She says the premises for the songs are/may fictional, but many of them include experiences she's had or feelings she's felt. Epiphany is factually partly about her grandfather's experience in WWII in the Pacific Theatre. She says so. Hoax is about/inspired by personal experiences with different forms of sadness in her own life. She says so. Peace is about her personal experiences with romantic relationships while being so famous. My Tears Ricochet is 100% factually about her experience with Scott Borchetta. Again. She doesn't say his name, but she says it is from someone in her own life. Mad Woman is about her personal experiences of female rage after being gaslight after Scott/Scooter, Kim/Kanye, and specifically during the defamation trial Taylor's sexual abuser brought against her for slander. I definitely think that the love triangle of the album is pure fiction. But she still weaves little glimpses of her own life and feelings into those songs. Betty, for example, the fkboi character James makes me think soooo much of the boy who never really cared from her small town earlier in her life as described in You're On Your Own Kid from Midnights. I think the difference with Folklore and Evermore is that she has let go of writing as directly autobiographically as she has for most of her career (much of which for me as well, I'm looking at in hindsight. I only really got into Swift in 2019). I don't think their is an artist alive or dead that has ever completely divorced themselves from their own work. And why should they?

@@notyourmanicpixie you have that choice. You don't get to say it's 100% fiction when she says other wise about a bunch of the tracks on the album. I also don't know if you just misunderstood what I said about Betty. I am in 100% agreement that that song is fictional. I do think, however, that it is worth thinking about images from fictional songs that then crop up in later songs on other albums where she is clearly writing from her own autobiographical experience. And yeah, sometimes I also just blatantly deny what her takes on her own stories are 🤷‍♀️ she says that Betty and James ended up together during that Long Pond discussion. Not in my imagination they don't! Betty and August girl both go on to be happy with not fkbois in my world 🤣
