I personally interpreted it like when someone you love gives you advice, and then you break up, and they're not there anymore to reasure those advices. Like the coment above said, they're not there to say "told you so" anymore, so you'll remember the advice, but the person who gave it won't be there with you. For me personally, an old friend once told me to never make promisses being happy, and he usually told me it was a bad idea when i did it near him, and everytime i promise something nos, i just remember him,.but i know he'll never tell that to me again, and it feels like a punch in the stomach.

I firmly believe this is about Abigail. Taylor said in the Apple Music interview that this song was written about a friend who had ended a “life-altering relationship.” Abigail is her childhood best friend. Abigail and Matt had known each other for 7 years (I guess it’s the price I pay for 7 years in heaven). There is strong evidence that the two have divorced, including Abigail changing her surname back to her maiden one on her social media accounts and deleting all posts and pictures that have Matt in it. The two have also unfollowed each other, and Matt also unfollowed Taylor. Fifteen was also written for Abigail, and there’s a line in there that goes “Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind” (After giving you the best I had, tell me what to give after that). The line “All the years I’ve given is just shit we’re dividing up” strongly implies a divorce rather than a break-up, in my opinion. It seems to describe a property settlement, and all the other negotiated divisions of possessions and rights that occur when divorce is sought. The fact that this song seems to describe a divorce, combined with all the sprinkles of Abigail-related hints and Taylor’s statement that this was written about a close friend’s ended relationship, makes me believe this is about her. But of course, it’s all speculation. It could be about a divorced friend of hers that we don’t even know about.

I was listening to this album while cleaning and just putzing around my apartment, when I realized why I love Taylor. Her songs give us permission to just sit with love, as it is in that moment. She’s there during the losses and celebrations, the could haves, shouldn’t haves and regrets. Her words stick because they aren’t “romantic”, they’re real and she is growing alongside us. That is music, and that is what connecting to an audience is. Her stories also are mine…she’s my friend, and I grew up with her. Still am. That is why she has her loyal fanbase, and why her critics will never understand.

The lyrical prose in this song is 10/10. OH MY GOODNESS. Lemme just state my favorites.... "I showed you all of my hiding spots. Was dancing when the music stopped and in my disbelief I haven't faced reinvention." The person was vulnerable and didn't see it coming until it was right there in front of them and then they didn't know what to do. I'm not gonna give anymore examples bc this will be basically every single lyric but.... It's literally AMAZING. She says she's hurt, explains how she's hurt, but then says she understands, she's healing, is grateful, and it will get better. But that contrast of pain /understanding is everything.

This is so accurate with how it feels to lose someone you love dearly and to have to let go of the dream of what could have been. My husband left and told me he wanted a divorce last December 19th. Things had changed. He had changed. It was no longer what it was in the beginning. I really thought he was my soul mate. I was dedicated to being with him for the rest of my life. It has been a long road of healing. I'm not done healing yet, but I have come a very long way. I am no longer sad every single day. I can see a life without him now. This past year I've been struggling with making amends with it, not because of love (I moved on pretty quickly from those feelings, mostly because he was untruthful to me about his reasons to leave), but because all the plans and life goals we once shared. It's hard to love someone and give yourself completely and suddenly be told there's nothing worth fighting anymore. But I'm trying to forgive him, I can't live with hate in my heart, still not really there yet. I've been working a lot on my self love and worth, and someday I will be able to forgive completely and open myself to new beginnings. I know this song does not commonly resonate with many people but it hits me hard.
