"You started it" is a childhood saying we used when defending our actions during a confrontation. It's not used anymore as adults, but in this song it conjures feelings that have been suppressed for years.

what strikes me the most is that she refers to a gravestone ( "the old widow goes to the stone") and she lives in a 'house of stone'...her house is essentially made of the same material a gravestone is made of. suggesting that she is confined in a sort of metaphorical death...i just did an in-depth literary analysis of this song on my channel and imo that really is what her existence must feel like...entrapment. taylor really said let's write a novel and make everyone cry omgg

Yes to everything everyone’s said about the lyrical genius of this song, and I just have to add the way she writes the lyrics to the musical phrasing to further tell the story. For example: “Oh, I can’t” [breath that makes you think that’s the end of the sentence] “stop you putting roots in my dreamland” - meaning instantly changes and an entire struggle gets packed into one phrase. I bow down.

I think this song is about a married woman married to her husband by an arranged wedding (probably because this happened in a medieval time). Her husband is probably abusive and someone she never loved that's why the line "And the old widow goes to the stone every day. But I don't, I just sit here and wait, grieving for the living". She possibly fell in love with someone else or loves someone ever before her marriage. The line "he only wants what's yours" is maybe referring to her husband asking for her love, but it will forever belong to her loved one. She wanna be with that someone but is afraid that her husband would hurt her if he finds out about them.

My favorite lyric is "he wants what's only yours", because that line is usually referring to the husband having what the other man wants. But this idea makes it seem like law doesn't have as much pull as emotional experience. Thus couple may be married by law, but he's the "other man", to her, who's started a riveting relationship with a person that she feels is the one that truly loves her and therfore she belongs to.
@franciscaserra50963 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of you are saying that if Evermore is Folklore's sister album, than this song is Illicit Affairs' sister song. I rather believe that this song is August's sister song actually. First of all, because the title of the song also contains the first name of a person. In addition, while the three songs do deal with a love triangle, August and Ivy talk about being in love with someone, even though they shouldn't, but they just can't help it. Whilst in the song August, we have August, James and Betty, here we have Ivy, her husband and her lover. In Illicit Affairs, the main relationship (between the mistress and her lover) is a toxic one, where the mistress wishes she wasn't in that situation and her lover takes advantage of her dependency to make her stay. In Ivy, similarly to August, love is described as innocent, pure and unavoidable. Both the characters are n a cheating situation. Still, rather than being dependent on their lover in a toxic way, they are truly in love with them.
