Love how she used broken toys as a metaphor for turbulent relationship. the boy destroying sandcastles or dolls could be that he's exhausting her and hes only taking what's functioning and leaving the broken parts not realising that she's had enough.

the usage of "toys" and "dolls" and "play pretend" represents a type of child-like innocence, HOWEVER, like a bully or a misbehaving child, he destroys the "sandcastles" the narrator builds. from what i'm gathering, Taylor is illustrating a relationship she presumed was innocent and and she worked so hard to build it up, only to be knocked down (like the sandcastles) every single time. If she rebuilds it, it will never be the same as before.

I’m not sure. I’ve felt like this before and I guess the way I felt was, I was his favorite toy until he slowly broke me and then when you’re broken they don’t want anything to do with you anymore, so you’re put back on the shelf and left there. But you love them so you make excuses for them, so you stay and are played with like a toy. I’m not sure if that’s where she’s coming from but this song definitely brought me back to that relationship and those feelings.

The extend metaphors, between an innocent boy playing with his adoring favorite toy, solving puzzle pieces in the night when they're not supposed to be awake vs the emotionally turbulent manchild discarding something he said he loved like she was just a toy and now the toy has no boy (Toy Story style), because he was intimidated by the emotional vulnerability the relationship exposed hits hard. the juxtaposition between childhood innocence and adult brokenness is so perfectly eerie

For me, it's the lyric "I know I'm just repeating myself / Put me back on my shelf / But first, pull the string / And I'll you that he runs because he loves me" that really captures the denial that she found herself in, trying to convince her friends and family (and ultimately herself) that he "runs because he loves me"... And the imagery of a doll with a string in its back that you can pull to make it repeat the same thing over and over again robotically.... It's just such a strong, vivid picture she's painting of a loveless couple! It also makes me think it could apply to anyone who's been a victim of DV (even if it's not her case specifically)... How many victims repeat over and over again that their abuser does X or Y thing "because he loves me"? Taylor Swift is such an impressive storyteller.

One of my favorites on the album. Taylor always knows how to make a sad banger
