The saddest thing about this song has to be the last phrase. Because we realize that all these things the narrator is saying,all these thoughts,all these stuff she's saying she could do,she didn't...She just sat there looking at the other person. That is heartbreaking to me,cause in the end,she couldn't do it and she stayed in this horrible relationship. This song shows pretty real life relationships. It's incredibly sad but...really touching.
@ferdinandnegron43823 жыл бұрын
Actually, it’s more about the anxiety of “does he really love me?” rather than a horrible relationship. Taylor wrote this song inspired by “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier, which revolves around a main character suffering from extreme anxiety and wondering every single day if she’s “enough” for the man she married. It’s a great book, one of my favorites, I recommend it. :)

I know this song is about a woman and her husband...but I feel like it applies to everyone who loves, who loves so deeply and greatly, who love with everything they have, who give everything they have to those who they love yet watch as they receive nothing in return. It’s about the battle in our minds, the battle of wether or not we’re making it up and it’s all inside our heads or if it really is real. But we still continue to give our all, not because we’re to stubborn to belive that it’s real but because we hope one day that one person will come and celebrate our love....

She puts this person up on a pedestal and makes them sound very heroic, like a dad figure. She paints such a positive picture of this person, yet they merely tolerate her love and praise for them. Could be some kind of paternal relationship. Just a thought!

I just can’t stop thinking about that repeat lyric at the end. The first lyric “I sit and watch you reading with your head low” you can just picture that. Then she goes on to describe all the things that have been tolerated by him and her confronting it. She knows all too well that if she leaves, their relationship will be in ruins, but if she stays, she will be in ruins. Then she gets brave enough to say, 'I'm leaving, goodbye.' But ultimately at the end of the day, she can't do it. She goes back to sitting and watching him, hoping one day, he will realize how much she loves him. She does not want to give up just yet.

I finally had the courage to move on, and found in that time, I do have something to offer someone. That my love and time could be cherished by someone. It took me a long time to be able to sing that bridge without breaking down into tears because it hit so hard that I had done exactly what she sang.....I broke free and left us in ruins, took the dagger in me and removed, had gained the weight of him then lost it, I DID THAT. In return, I have gained a love, acceptance, someone who does cherish me and who will listen when we're having a conversation. I related so much to this woman in this song and would encourage anyone, who is feeling the way this woman is in their own relationship, to get up and move on. It really is quite nice and experimental of her. I've never heard her write a song in 5/4 time (though "Closure" also is), but this one could technically be in 5/8 time, but either way 5 beats in a measure is always tricky to make sound natural and she did it. The first 4 notes of the piano being dotted quarter notes and the next being on the actual beat is very misleading and creative. & it's also quite an emotional song on top of the technical side of things. I love the way the end of each verse goes perfectly back into the chorus.

I know this song is about a romantic relationship, but i relate so much with other relationships as well. Family and friendships. One puts somuch out there, hungry for unconditional love, only to be tolerated. Whether its out of obligation or need. They take it in, but they dont see you. The effort or the attempt to become closer and more intimate. The love it off. Its just not reciprocal.

This song feels like the inner thoughts of a woman who subtly wants to end her unhealthy relationship with a guy who treats her like shit, but she kinda knows that she's too weak to actually break up with him. That's why the last phrase is "I sit and watch you" because no matter how much she wants to end it, she can never bring herself to actually do it, so she just ends up tolerating it. edit: I know that the song is pretty clear with its lyrics that it is the guy tolerating the girl, I was just kinda playing with my words 😅 like maybe, they're both tolerating each other. The guy tolerates her love, while the girl tolerates the guy who is tolerating her love. And to all the people in the comment section saying that they're going through this exact same situation, I hope you all find the courage and strength to leave and free yourselves from these toxic and unhealthy relationships. I know its hard and it takes time, but I know you will all get there soon. And to the people who've gone through this situation, I hope you all heal from these toxic relationships. One day, you will all find someone who will not anymore tolerate your love, but someone who is wholeheartedly willing to celebrate your love. ❤️

Dear Taylor, As soon as I heard the piano beginning, I knew this one was going to break my heart and it did but in the sweetest way possible. It reminded me that I deserve better than someone who just tolerates me and my love because it’s sacred. This song is painful. I was married 13 years to my high school sweetheart and I remember listening to this song the first time and it was the "theme" song to my life. Begging for attention, time, acknowledgment. Being so excited to see and spend time with him and head over heels in love after all those years regardless of how he treated me and knowing it wasnt the same for him. That he was tolerating me. I felt like I was planning and looking forward to our future while everything he planned was just him. From what he did in his free time to future plans. 13 years down the drain. He cheated, moved out, married the woman he cheated on me with, moved 12 hours away, and sees our 13 year old son a few times a year. Even though I am happier now than I have ever been, this song brings up so many emotions and bad memories. I will never let another person make me feel that way again.

Evermore and folkore don't get the appreciation they deserve. They are her best albums. End of the story.
@crimsoncl9ver Жыл бұрын
I might agree with Evermore but not with Folklore. That album brought a completely new wave of fans. It became one of her most critically acclaimed and admired works she's ever done. So many people that once underestimated her realized how wrong they were. It won AOTY and it marked the beginning of Taylor's dominance on Spotify.It's also gonna be at top 5 on Billboard 200 this week. Her 3rd highest charting album right after her latest 2 albums (1989 TV+Midnights).Folklore received and keeps receiving all of its flowers by both fans and critics. Evermore, on the other hand, while a lyrical masterpiece and on par with Folklore, lived quite in Folklore's shadow. It came out just a few months after it and it was named its sister. Therefore , it didn't get its chance to shine as an independent body of work and then Fearless TV followed. For the kind of beautiful lyrics and songs it has, it should definitely be more celebrated.

Kind of blows the theory that the said song is about her current boyfriend Joe, unless the engagement rumours are false and there is something going on between them. I feel like its more likely tho that invisible strings is part real life inspo and part, well, folklore

I love Taylor and this song, but I’m sorry, it’s all too profound for me to understand. What exactly does she mean by those 4 lines.
@tangeremu78873 жыл бұрын
@@krishu2483 "Break free and leave us in ruins" is basically saying that the speaker in this story leaving the relationship (breaking free) will cause the relationship to crumble (into ruins) "Took this dagger in me and removed it" I think this is a metaphor to the partner in this story, basically removing them from her and the pain that came with them (like a dagger) "Gain the weight of you then lose it" Just different rephrasing of how the speaker used to feel so much love from their partner but lost it as time went on "Believe me I could do it." I'm not too sure about this but I think it's the speaker finally moving on from the relationship

I don't know if this was intentional but this song sounds like it could be connected to Exile on folklore. In Exile, Justin Vernon sings "you never gave a warning sign" and Taylor sings "I gave so many signs". What if this song was one of the "warning signs" this character gave to her lover to hint at him that their relationship was on the rocks and he was just too oblivious to realize that she was feeling underappreciated by him until the day she finally walked away and found someone better, leading to the situation where Exile is sung?

Am an anxious attacher and I fell for a dismissive avoidant individual. And I cannot express enough how much this song sums up that whole experience. It's a whole different pain to long for someone you love but you cannot really have. All your time, efforts and affection towards this person are being dismissed. You end up dying each day for being taken for granted while you tell yourself it's fine because you love them. All you want in your heart is to have them there beside you and to just let you in. And so, you continue to hope for things to work out despite being tolerated. "I know my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it" that line is so real. It hurts This is why it is my most favourite song on this album.

I've been in that kind of relationship. Being constantly unappreciated, brushed off, only seen when you're about to end things. It goes on and on and on and that certain pain will slowly eat you, even after the relationship is over. My heart goes to people who can relate to the song.

As an adopted child who has lost her birth parents by abandonment and adoptive parents due to their abusive problems, this really hit me. Always felt like I took too much space and time. No matter how beautiful portrait I drew of them to others it didn't matter. I gained the weight of them and lost it. I feel unwanted and just tolerated in so many ways. 💔
