Taylormade P790 2023 vs Ping i525 Forgiveness Test

Thanks Jay for dialing back the clubspeed to match mine, I got fitted for i525's, but found your channel after. I'm not sure if the fitter handed me a P790, but have found out that my normal miss is toe-side (Yes, after the fitting as I had never seen how many figures Trackman is able to provide which sparked my interest in looking at numbers I never realized where available), which I can confirm is something the i525 deals with very well. And thanks to your thorough approach I don't regret not having hit the P790. I think I got fitted nicely as is

I just did a fitting today and hit both of these. I consistently hit the i525 better then I did the p790. I feel like the p790 has a fatter top line that I don’t like compared to the ping. On a flush hit the p790 had a little better feel like hitting the sweet spot of a baseball bat. But the i525 just had much better dispersion then the p790s. I hit my 7 iron around 210 yards on average so I have a lot higher swing speed than most. The pings also had about 150 rpm’s higher spin which is what I need for it to stop on the green.

I am a consistent toe striker and couldnt believe the better contact the i525 gave me on those imperfect shots. Really impressed me and felt so good that toe strikes were as good as pure shots from my apex 21s. So your video and data were excellent. Top work

Way to go Jay! Another awesome video....nobody does it like you. Ping for me, i like the perimeter weighing v centralized and, the max grooves. Also like that ping has a slightly larged sole to help steep swingers that have some level of speed

I tend to miss thin & in my test between the two I could not get decent launch angle & height with i525 while P790 worked great. This video explains that very well 👍 In theory I would think that the sudden increase in efficiency by i525 on slight toe strike seems like it risks the "jumpy" shot (although the example shown was balanced out by higher spin). I'd rather see all mishits dropping distance consistently than some gaining and some losing distance.

Well done test. One thing to keep in mind for potential buyers, the 20-22’ 790’s are not the 23’ 790’s, they are definately improved. I played 525’s 2 yrs ago for a season and while doing so i demo’d 790’s for a couple rnds, no comparison in forgivness, 525’s killed them. So if you buy clubs used/second hand as budget allows, this test isnt accurate for the older models of 790’s. What i noticed about older models was the dispersion on even slight mishits was far more erradic with more fliers outta nowhere.

I very much agree. If you look at my most recent P790 review (2023 model) I found it much easier to use and had much bet results. Very much player specific 👍🏻

But that'd be awesome to see :-) I have tried all three, and really can't chose between the three of them, even the numbers are quite similar. I'm mainly leaning towards the p790s because I think resale value on the Srixons is a bit lower, and Titleist I have a little beef about a warranty issue with. So they're kinda making me lean TaylorMade. I love the MG4s too, so that'd make a nice uniform looking setup

With the announcement of the i530 for the spring, I went back to review this test. Interesting that the 530's are supposed to be stronger lofts with some other tweaks. Any idea when you will get your hands on the new i530?

I525 released Jan 2022 vs TM P790 released Aug 2023. Even tho this is a valid club vs club review, you gotta hand it to Ping for coming up with the Tech specs a over year and a half before TM.

Pings release cycles are longer than TM so I've always thought Ilif brands that do release every year whether they purposely hold a certain amount of tech back to give them small increments. Where Ping knowing they can go up to 4 years between releases in certain circumstances, just throw whatever they can at making their best possible iron knowing they have longer to think about bettering it 🤔 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻

I love the 790, saying that, the Ping is the clear winner for me, Ping has always made top notch forgiving Irons, except the Blue Print!! those were about as forgiving as a supermodel on a bad date!

i 525 not great low....one of the worst ive owned....im having similar problem with cobra forged tec 2022. players hollow back distance irons dont seem to like thin shots at all. rather have the front to back dispersion of a blade over these. and zx7 and zx5 way better....ill be switching to dynapower forged very soon for this reason.

The sole slot tech in my Tour Edge 9w is amazing. I can imagine it's very helpful in irons too. But my misses are toe shots and thin shots. 😅

Can't knock the ping for consistently hitting the green. There's some really good hollow back irons out there. The TM does look good though ill stick to the i230 for a while

Like to see what shaft(s) optimizer suggests for you , what shaft you’re swinging, and what lie*s and club lengths you’re hitting. You hv a very unique setup, appears to be a lower spine angle than usual. You hit it so well, with such repeatability, it’s amazing actually 😇. I find lie*s are critical to dispersion issues. No not necessarily, golfers need to see irons not for their marketed handicap eating and more for what the golf club gives in terms of its design. So the i530 will be an iron that gives some added distance from it's faster face than the i230. More forgiving from off centre strikes and also the need for a little extra launch. So for low handicap golfers generally they strike the ball well but again that is not always the case so these could easily be used as a full set option retro spec'd or in the longer harder to hit irons 👍🏻
