I get this frequently with taxi drivers here, and although sometimes it's funny, most of the time it tends to move towards feeling "creepy". There is a difference between a friendly conversation and a flirtatious one, and the "I can take you and your friends to _______________ for free" is one of the main things I hear used when the driver is trying to make the conversation more flirtatious. I hate when it happens. :(

Your experience with the taxi driver is exactly why over the last couple years I've made less and less small talk and generally keep to myself with strangers (in Tokyo). I'm from a small town and am totally more friendly when I go back home but have had too many creepy things happen in Tokyo!! PS that cake was awesome hahaha

They're the type of comments where someone will say something mean or unnecessary, then turn right around and give a half assed compliment like that excuses the fact that they just insulted her. The Taxi driver was hilarious! "I'm slightly terrified of that taxi driver......." LOL! He seemed so precious! Hopefully one day you and three friends take that trip to Mt. Fuji with him! I'm sure it'd be an excellent vlog. I remember when we were leaving Japan, we called a taxi van service to pick us up and our driver was SO cute. Maybe he was like, in his 50s, I want to say. But, his little display ID on the vehicle was the most adorable thing ever. He was wearing a little driving cap and had the biggest smile and looked so happy. Immediately after my husband told me something like, "Did you see his big, cheesy smile?!" And I was like, "Yes! I was trying to steal a picture of it, but I couldn't!" :( :( :( The drivers out there seem so polite. I'm sure that isn't always the case, but we had good luck with them.
