I will never understand why, when recutting the film, Coppola eliminating literally the final 10 seconds. In it's original form, the film goes on for just a few more seconds than it does here and Michael slumps over in his chair and dies, ultimately falling out of the chair onto the dusty ground, with no one around to see but the barking little dog. It was a perfect ending - in the end, he dies alone, sad, broken and forgotten. Why he took that out I will never know.

I read somewhere he changed it because he believed that living, knowing everyone around him that mattered had died and that he was all alone, was worse in someways than dying. Instead, the ultimate travesty is actually living on with regret and suffering

It's unfortunate that they cut out his death in this version because it is quite poetic. He dies alone, sitting in a chair and then falls to the ground. It's poetic because after everything he has done and seen, he receives a peaceful death. Hopefully you watch some more mob movies because there is quite a few good ones. I'd suggest A Bronx Tale

What I find interesting is that at the end of Godfather 1 Michael was becoming more cold hearted. Connie was able to stick up for her abusive husband. Even though she was quite weak throughout the movie... Godfather 2 Michael reaches it's peak at being more powerful and cold blooded. While Connie becomes money hungry... Godfather 3 Michael's heart filled with sorrow. It shows that there is still good in Michael's heart. Connie had transitioned into a strong coldhearted woman. That wasn't afraid to take a life. Even though they are brother and sister. When this trilogy started they were at opposite ends. Trilogy is now over and they are still at opposite ends. They just switched sides. Michael becomes more soft while Connie becomes more ruthless...

Great review. I have always fallen into the camp of "this is a good movie, just doesn't quite measure up to the first two." One thing to remember about Sofia Coppola is that she was a replacement, as Winona Ryder was set to play Mary, but dropped out at the last minute. Fortunately for fans of the original cut of this movie, the 4k Trilogy pack has both Coda, and "Part III" as the theatrical cut. Also Samantha's face on this thumbnail cracks me up. 🤣🤣🤣

The one thing I very much enjoy about the Godfather films is how they intertwine real historical events into their narrative, the second movie had the Cuban revolution and then the third movie has this case of a pope mysteriously dying and then a new pope being ordained, shortly thereafter, Also the papal banking scandal these two things actually took place in the late seventies and early 80s

I come from an Italian family and these movies are a huge part of our lives and we always watch them together as a family during the holidays. I remember when this movie came out in the theaters, we all went together as a family, we were even dressed semi formally. We had mixed views of the third one, but given how amazing the first two are, it wasn't surprising for the third to feel like a bit of a letdown. I actually enjoyed it though and think it gets more hate than it should.

"Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!"....Michael viewed himself as trapped. But here he was, still trying to recruit his son into the family. I mean, maybe he viewed his son as another Tom Hagen, but still he didn't get it. Also, regardless of how Kay viewed Michael up until the Opera, she would have always blamed Michael for Mary's death, and Michael was already racked by guilt before his daughter died. BTW, the "dying Popes" in the late 1970's was accurate, although not the reasons they died, obviously 😄 After the death of 2 Popes in 30 days, John Paul II was Pope for about 3 decades. I saw that you are starting with the Sopranos this week 💖 You will love it! Plus, they reference this movie all the time. GREAT reaction!!!

@furnitureconsortium
@furnitureconsortium 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with Robert Duvall for not taking the role As a fan of the series, it sucked because Coppola was going to frame Part 3 around Tom Hagen as he was to play a big part in the story arc. If that indeed was the case, Coppola and the studios should have ponied up the cash for Duvall. In 1972 and 1974, sure....Robert Duvall was still a relatively unknown actor as was most of the cast save for Marlon Brando. But by 1990, Duvall was a bankable star on the level of an Al Pacino or Diane Keaton. The money that was offered to Duvall for part 3 was frankly an insult. That being said, I did enjoy seeing George Hamilton as Michael's lawyer as I never saw Hamilton in a movie before this. By 1990, all I knew about Hamilton (I was 15 in 1990, lol) was that he was perpetually tan and he used to be in some B-movies back in the 1960's and 1970's, haha. Part 3 was a good movie and it does stand on its' own merit....the only problem was that the two predecessors were masterpieces to live up to. The big problem was the lead-up into this movie.....Coppola and Mario Puzo (the original author of The Godfather book) wanted to make this movie back in the late 70's and early 80's...but Coppola couldn't get a movie studio to back him (or something along those lines) and instead Coppola started making Apocalypse Now. Apocalypse took three years to make which cut into that period immensely and in the process went way over the budget. This also further dropped Coppola's stock with the movie studios. Coppola made Godfather Part 3 as a way to save his then-failing Vineyard in California, or it may have been another business of his that was failing. I'm relying on memory and it's so easy to just pull it up on Wikipedia, but I'm trying to remember the details. In the process of getting the studios to sign off on having the movie made, he made some concessions that he normally wouldn't have. Plus, Winona Ryder dropped out of the movie within the first week of production. I can't remember if any scenes with her were shot or not. But Ryder was going through some issues of her own at the time, exhaustion I think was what the reason was for her to walk away from the movie. So, Coppola was in a pinch to get the role of Mary Corleone filled and he went ahead and used his daughter Sofia. Sofia got a lot of flack for her portrayal, but it wasn't that bad in my opinion. Sofia went on to greater fame as a director of many awesome movies in the 2000's and 2010's. There were very loose concepts of a possible fourth Godfather movie to follow the new arc of Vincent Corleone. But, because of the relatively poor reception to Part 3 and the mixed reviews it got, all plans for a fourth movie were scrapped by Coppola and Puzo. Which is a shame as Andy Garcia was a phenomenal pick to continue the mantle, as his showing in this movie proved.

One of the most underrated movies ever made. The fact that FFC outdid himself once already with Godfather 2 was more than anyone could have asked for, so there was bound to be a drop off after the 2nd movie. You're not going to compete with that and it would be ridiculous to compare anything to 2 of the best films of all time. As late 80s, early 90s gangster movies go, it's still a very good movie, on par with Goodfellas, which came out the same year. There's nothing terribly "wrong" with it, but again, it's like being Dave Chappelle at 19 years old following George Carlin in 1993, when George was heading into his absolute prime. It's an impossible situation. There are a few tweaks Coppola could have made to improve the movie, but you're not going to top either of the first 2 films. As sequels go, it's still among the better ones and has some of the obligatory memorable lines that you expect from this film series. It's a bit more comic book/cheesy in parts, the kissin' cousins bit is slightly cringe and it's definitely lacking in the timeless quality of the first 2 films and very much rooted in the late 80s/early 90s in terms of filmmaking, but that doesn't make it a bad film. I like how they developed Michael's, Kay's and Connie's characters, and they're basically the 2 who are left from the first 2 films that you're wanting to see anyway. It's one of those rare times as a guy where I can watch a movie and almost take the guy's side in an argument. She knew what she signed up for. To pretend that she was this innocent flower and Michael was an awful person who was trying to corrupt her and she got out like some kind of hero before she got caught up in it is a bit farfetched. She got buyer's remorse, essentially. She could get out and save her conscience. For Michael, it wasn't that simple. "Every time I try to get out, they pull me back in." She could never appreciate that, and that made her a giant hypocrite every time she confronted Michael with his sins.

In the original ending, when the elderly and blind Michael eats the orange, he has a heart attack and dies. When I saw it at the theater, everyone assumed that it was a few years after the incident but, in the Godfather timeline, he died in 2002, which means, instead of showing a few years before 1990, it takes place two years in the future. Also, when Michael had cried when Michael cried, he should have been at that point when he killed Solozzo and McCluskey. If that didn't happen, both Mary and Fredo would still be alive.

It's not a "parade" they show 17:45 into the film. If you go to New York City for, I think 2 week's, in August, they have what's called Saint Genaro's Feast. Several block's in Little Italy are blocked off and every kind of Italian food you can think of is sold in outdoor stand's and inside diner's. I've been twice and it is wonderful!!! Please try it some year. Get the Italian Sausage sandwich, with fried onion's and pepper's! Delicious!!!

Despite the roasting this film got, and Coppola only doing it in the first place to get out of debt, he was actually planning a fourth movie for a while which would have had a much looser structure showing the family over several different time periods. But then Mario Puzo died, and Coppola refused to do it without him.

There's three books which were accepted into the lore by two authors. They tie up a few loose ends, one being Tom's end. One book, The Family Corleone by Ed Falco is a prequel to the first movie, and I aways mentally picture scenes from that book as being used in a fourth film if they would've made a Sonny/Vincent movie similar to the second film. I know that was in the pipeline with Leonardo DiCaprio as the young Sonny back in the 90s, but the movie was never made after the third bombing. Which is unfortunate because I actually enjoyed the third movie. Vincent was never actually around the family, as in included. He was the bastard child of Sonny, conceived during the first movie where Sonny sneaks back into the house and gets... busy. From what I read, Francis wanted Vincent to go out the same way as Pablo Escobar did.

The editing of this version helped the film a little bit but not that much. The first two films were so iconic it was too high a bar to clear. Plus, that helicopter attack was such a jump-the-shark moment for me it was hard to take the movie seriously afterwards. Considering the time span between the second and third films, it wasn’t a bad effort but never quite put everything together.

I'm only sorry that Coppola cut the scene of the church ceremony with Michael. It was very symbolic because it refers to the great emperors and kings of the past who were crowned by the church at the height of their power. Perhaps the removal of him was functional to a better initial assembly.

@@TBRSchmitt Btw, if you do see the theatrical cut, you’d notice some changing of scene sequences as well as cut scenes from Coda being back in. Case in point: In Coda here you see Michael talk with the Archbishop about the problems of the Vatican Bank, and after the “I’ll put in 500 million dollars to help with your 700 million deficit, if you will make me Chief Shareholder of Immobiari (sp?)” deal is struck, next we see Michael getting that big “Outstanding Catholic” medal. In the theatrical cut it is very different. It *opens* with Michael getting the Outstanding Catholic medal, and then the afterparty thereof (Not unlike how Part I and II opened with a big celebration), and only after that (which would imply that Michael already made enough Church Donations to warrant such a prestige beforehand) does Michael talk with the Archbishop about Vatican Bank and Immobliari.

Vincent biting off Joey's ear is a way to open a duel in Sicily. Likewise, in the opera Caballeria Rusticana(Played by Anthony, the son of Michael Corleone), which appears in the play's story, applies for a duel in the same way to his rival. God, Hollywood won't be able to make a mafia movie again in a way that doesn't miss a single detail like this.

Actually, Vincent DID go rogue - to say nothing of the the fact that Zasa was a made man, upon whom only the boss of the family can order a hit, neither Connie nor Al Neri were Michael's designated underboss. Furthermore, Sonny didn't kill any made men before becoming the boss in the first film, and his hits on Bruno Tattaglia & Virgil Sollozzo were acts of vengeance in a war WHILE he was boss, and as such (however ill-advised) were well within the rules. BTW, sadly (and in my opinion unjustly) Sofia Coppola was widely panned for her portrayal of Mary Corleone.

You guys have ruined cake for me (J/K). Hyman Roth was not poisoned by the cake, I believe it was symbolic of the mobsters dividing up Cuba. This is why the camera is focused on the cake. It is all meaningless after all as the revolution breaks out and Castro takes power. I don't know if you were aware of this as you did not mention it. Of course the flashback scenes of the young Vito (Robert De Niro) were my favorite part of the second movie. Part 3 did not cut it for me as a whole but still worth watching and had it's moments. Did you not recognize "Tuco" from G,B&U as Don Altobello, he ate the poison cannoli. I have not seen this version, Michael dies in the original. In any case , I very much enjoyed your reactions/reviews of the Epic story, thank you.

The Coda Edition cuts the last seconds of the movie. At the end, after elderly Michael puts on the glasses, he falls over off his chair and dies. Old and alone except for a puppy around him. The beginning scene that was cut was the church ceremony giving Michael the Pope’s medal. Then it transitions to the party. This movie wraps up the tragic story of The Corleones. Almost Shakespearean. There was talk of a Godfather 4 looking at the family with Vincent in control, but Mario Puzo (the book’s author) died. Coppola didn’t want to do another movie without him, so G4 never went any further.
