I love the recurring line "It's not me". At first Blank says it to signify that he is not responsible because he is just the weapon that someone else has hired. When Debbie finds him kneeling over a dead body he says it again and it seems desperate, like a cry for help. Dialogue throughout the movie drops hints about the drugs that Blank used to take (and Grocer still does) to numb emotions and supress empathy, it is easy to see how when he stops taking them, Martin could have this realisation that by living the life of a hitman he is betraying who he truly is. As he puts it: "It's not me".

And Alan Arkin tells him to take a deep breath and say, “This is me breathing.” Martin does so, then looks in the mirror and says, “You’re a handsome devil. What’s your name?” Throughout the movie he’s reconnecting with his former self, and then he is faced with the reality of what he’s become when Debi is horrified at finding him with a dead body. Great scriptwriting.

As a teen-adult in the 1990s, this is a classic movie. The soundtrack was a lot of stuff from my youth. -those old CRT televisions had big capacitors and a heavy screen so if you got hit in the head hard enough with it, it would kill you, not stun you.

It always makes me laugh when I see younger folks not understand how dense, heavy and packed with sharp things TVs once had. LOL. They seem to think it is hollow for some reason many times. NOPE. All kinds of crap poking all over the place and if those were smashed on to a head, the insides would break and have even more sharper objects inside to die on. LOL. What is funny though is those CRT screens where NOT EASY to break. Real life it would most likely simply knock someone out and not actually break at all. Thrown onto the ground, sure. However, not someones soft head.

The CRT means there's a glass tube-cube combination that has a vacuum inside. That's the glasspart and it needs to be quite sturdy to withstand the pressuredifference. Getting that glasspart broken over the head should be enough to "past time" someone like in the movie.

Urquidez is also known for once holding the rare achievement of six world titles in five different weight divisions, and remained largely undefeated in his 27-year career. Yay! Thankyou Mike Adams - I’ve been hoping the Schmitts would get to Grosse Pointe Blank eventually, and it was worth the wait! It’s one of my all-time favourites, a hidden gem that from the very first needle drop of “I Can See Clearly Now” had me 100% hooked. The world is split into those who love GPB and those who have never heard of it, so it’s always a thrill to see new people experience it! And yes, John Cusack really did kick ass! He’s a highly accomplished kick-boxer and the guy he was fighting was his instructor, legendary martial artist Benny “The Jet” Urquidez. I once watched the movie with a friend who’s a black-belt in karate, and when it got to the fight he said “Woah, this is REALLY good…”

Fun fact about the car scene between John Cusack and Jeremy Piven! They were directed to play the exchange three ways: understated, conversational, and over-the-top. In the edit, the first and last takes were combined to drive a nail onto how ridiculous the conversation is. Also, them laughing at the end wasn't in the script, that's John and Jeremy corpsing (i.e. breaking character).

One of my all time favourites. If you grew up in the 80's and 90's then John Cusack starred in a string of teen favourites, such as One Crazy Summer, The Sure Thing, Say Anything (with one of THE most iconic 80's movies moments ever), The Grifters, and many more. But Grosse Pointe Blank was the epitome of dark comedy movies of that era, and it's difficult to think of many that rival it since. Dan Akroyd is just genius casting, as is John's sister Joan, and Minnie Driver. Just a great combination of talent.

This was the Cusack's crowning glory. They are both so hilarious in this movie. Such a great concept and script. Also my favorite Dan Akroyd role. Awesome soundtrack rounded it all out.

I love the dark Christmas comedy, The Ice Harvest. Directed by the late Harold Ramis, stars John Cusack, Billy Bob Thornton, and Connie Nielsen, and a hysterical Oliver Platt. Despite the dark nature of the story, I've always found it to be a rather cozy film, given the setting and plot and just holiday spirit (even if the characters hate on Christmas most of the time).

I don't know if anyone's mentioned that John Cusak has a black belt and has been kickboxing since his early 20s. The guy he fought and killed in the movie was his first martial arts instructor from back when he was preparing for Say Anything.

So many things owe this as their inspiration. Analyze This, The Sopranos, Barry, even a highly-rated episode of Buffy that shares some supporting cast.

A great quirky black comedy pick, and I'd add Seven Psychopaths as well; same director/writer producer Martin McDonagh behind that and Colin Firth in the lead again.

The hitman he stabs with the pen is Benny ( The Jet ) Urquidez, Cusack's martial arts instructor. ps. 'Runaway Jury' with Cusack, Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman

The is the unofficial sequel to Better Off Dead, an 80's John Kusack teen skiing movie. If you haven't seen it, you should. It's a classic 80's movie. It's a standard teen movie of the era, no assassins. The only change from the original, is the love interest isn't French. All the other characters are there.

A good John Cusack movie to see is The Sure Thing (1986). One of his earliest movies, also very early in Daphne Zuniga's career (Spaceballs). Directed by Rob Reiner (Stand by Me. Spinal Tap, Princess Bride and more).
